B&W/MMS User Group Newsletter June 1985 Vol.1 No. 1 MMS User Group Conducts First Meeting The B&W/Modular Modeling System (MMS) User Group held its first meeting March 12-13 at the Lynchburg Hilton in Lynchburg, Va. Babcock & Wilcox, EPRI's designated code coordinator and commercial licensing agent for the MMS, hosted the event. There were 32 attendees representing the Electric Power Research Institute, B&W, utilities and architect engineering firms. Seven of the eight charter members were represented Duke Power, Southern California Edison, Philadelphia Electric, Bechtel Power, TVA, Detroit Edison and Niagara Mohawk. Oak Ridge Na- tional Laboratory was the only member not represented. Several non-member organizations also at- tended. The User Group bylaws were amended and unanimously ac- cepted. The group elected officers, who will also serve on the Advisory Committee, and at-large members of the Advisory Committee. Biographical information on each person the group elected is includ- ed in this newsletter. MMS User Group Conducts First MeetingThe B&W/Modular Modeling

The President's CornerAs president of the B&W/MMS

User Group, I intend to have a let-ter in each issue of the groupnewsletter. In this first letter Iwould like to thank those whoelected me as the first president ofthe User Group. I consider thisboth an honor and a specialresponsibility. The responsibility isthe role that all of us have asmembers of the User Group. MMSis the first code that EPRI has com-mercialized in this manner; theway that we develop the role of thisUser Group will set a precedent forother codes that EPRI may releaseand commercialize in the future.

The key to a successful UserGroup will be the guidance that wegive B&W concerning our needsfor serv ices and code im-provements. There are severalways that members can provide in-put to the commercializers. Theprimary way is the User Groupmeetings. I intend to structure themeetings so that the primary focuswill be reports from you, the users.

We need to share problems that wehave not been able to resolve anduseful features or methods that wehave found in working with MMS.Meetings wi l l also provide achance to suggest new areas inwhich we want the commercializerto provide additional services ormake, program improvements. Inthis regard, I request that as youuse MMS between now and thenext meeting, keep in mind howyou might report what you are do-ing. I will be writing to you againbefore the next meeting with moreon the format of the users report.

Another way that members cangive guidance to the commer-cializer is by direct communicationwith B&W. If this does not work,you can directly contact the of-ficers of the User Group.

To help both B&W and the UserGroup Advisory Committee setpriorities, I urge you to completethe users survey, which was sentout with the minutes of the firstUser Group meeting.

B&W Develops Enhanced Version of MMSTo encourage membership in

the MMS User Group, B&W hasdeveloped an enhanced version ofthe MMS that is only available tomembers. This software consistsof the EPRI MMS plus additionalmodules and features developedby B&W. It is configuration-controlled by B&W on a semian-nual basis. In addition, it is beingcoordinated with the MMS-EASE +pre- and post-processor softwaredescribed on page 6.

The additional modules thatwere developed by B&W in 1984and are in the B&W-released ver-sion of the MMS are:

• PZRB — PWR pressurizer.The pressurizer establishes andmaintains the reactor coolantsystem pressure within prescribed(imits. (t is a vertical, cylindricalvessel with a bottom surge lineand internal electric heaters andspray nozzle. The pressurizer actsas a steam surge chamber and

water reserve to accommodatereactor coolant density changes.The PZRB module is a non-equilibrium model with no iterativepressure search required.

• RX1 — PWR single nodereactor model. This modulerepresents a PWR of the typedesigned by Westinghouse, Com-bustion Engineering, and B&W. Itsintended use is to represent thethermal-hydraulic and neutronicphenomena necessary to simulatea PWR for contro l and in-termediate or long-term operation.No flux shape correction factorsare used to approximate the axialpower distribution and neutrondetectors are not simulated. Apoint kinetics approximation is us-ed with three groups of delayedneutrons and three decay heatgroups.

• UTSGA — PWR natural cir-

culation U-tube steam generator.The model employs a detailedrepresentation of the thermal-hydraulics and uses the drift-f luxformulation in the boiling andunheated riser regions. The secon-dary side is divided into fiveregions: steam dome, downcomer,s u b c o o i e d , bo i l i ng and anunheated riser/separator region.The primary side is divided intofour regions corresponding to divi-sion of tubes into hot and coldregions and additional divisionbetween subcooied and boiling.

• UTSGE — PWR natural cir-culation U-tube steam generatorwi th pre-heater. This moduleutilizes the same formulation asUTSGA. The secondary side isdivided into six regions: steamdome, downcomer, preheater sub-cooled, preheater boiling, boilingand an unheated riser/separatorregion. The primary is divided thesame as UTSGA.

Cycle Simulator.* Niagara Mohawk — Cycling

study for 800 MWe fossilp lan t , analyze steamtemperature control pro-blems and air heater pro-blems on Albany Units 1-4and Dunkirk Units 1 and 2.

• TVA — Auxiliary feedwatercontrol system model forSequoyah. Plan to develop amodel of the seconday plantfor use in the EPRI/Westing-house digital feedwater con-trol system development forSequoyah. Fossil unit cycl-ing studies and simulationof the Atmospheric Fluidiz-ed Bed Boi ler System160 MWe demonstrationunit at Paducah, Ky.

* Bechtel Power — Models ofDiablo Canyon and PaloVerde nuclear units with em-phasis on secondary plantanalysis. Also ful l plantsimulation of Potomac RiverUnit 4 (fossil unit).

• Oak R i d g e N a t i o n a lLaboratory — Full plantmodel of Baltimore Gas andE lec t r i c ' s Calvert C l i f f sUnits 1 and 2. The model will

be used to identify safetyimp l i ca t ions of cont ro lsystem failures for the U.S.Nuclear Regulatory Com-mission.

• C l e v e l a n d E l e c t r i c I l -luminating Co. — Fossil ap-plications to simulate pro-cesses and equipment toanalyze them for applicationfor new control techniquesand hardware.

• Arizona Public Service Co.— Full plant analysis forPalo Verde Units 1, 2, 3, andsafety analysis scoping foruse with RETRAN.

• Utah Power and Light —Fossil applications, modelGadsby Unit 3, validateMMS. Use for r e t r o f i tstudies and optimization onexisting units and for con-trol system tuning. Use forup and down scaling offossil designs and costanalysis.

B&W Targets Enhancements For 1985In response to direction from the

Advisory Committee, B&W hasgiven the committee its plan formaking MMS enhancements in thecoming year. Though the plan istoo detailed to be printed in full,highlights of it are listed below:

• MMS-EASE+ Software —This software package is be-ing developed using B&Wfunding. The initial releasewas announced in late April.Completion of the BOP andfossil modules and systemtesting of the final versionare slated for July.

• Extended Range Capability— Work that was started byB&W in 1984 wil l be com-pleted in 1985 to extend

MMS module formulationsto mode! reverse flow, wets team, and l o w - f l o wscenarios.

* Steady-state Finders — Thenew ACSL TRIM algorithmwill be tested using modelscontributed by users. TheMMS module library will bereviewed to identify problemmodules. Documentation onthe use of the new TRIMalgorithm will be supplied tomembers and resolution ofany outstanding issues (in-cluding acquisition of newsteady-state software, ifnecessary) will be accom-plished.

• Con t ro l Modu les —Nomenclature for typical

control modules wi l l beassigned and the macroswi l l be developed. Themodules will be tested andincorporated into the MMS-B&W v e r s i o n and thedocumentation.

• Controls Analysis Tools —A survey of User Groupneeds and controls analysissoftware availability will beconducted. A set of soft-ware will be selected for im-plementation into the MMS-B&W. Advanced instructionon its use will be provided toUser Group members.

Numerous other taskshave been identified and willbe scheduled at a later date.

He claims both ac-curacy and time savings for hisINCON SS algorithm. Randy Mayof S. Levy, Inc. gave an overviewpresentation of the BWRX module.

The next User Group meetingwill be hosted by Bechtel PowerCorporation at Bechtel's San Fran-ciso offices on Sept. 17-18, 1985.

Since joining Niagara MohawkPower Corporation (NMPC) in 1982,Ted Kulczycky has been a projectengineer responsible for managingvarious plant improvement pro-jects at NMPC's fossil fueledsteam and combustion turbinegenerating stations. His respon-sibilities include developing andcontroll ing a project's scope,budget and schedule. Typical pro-jects have covered plant-widedigital data acquisition systems,genera to r re lay p r o t e c t i o nupgrades, control upgrades utiliz-

seminar was conducted Feb. 13-15in Tokyo, Japan. The seminar washosted by Nuclear Data Corpora-tion and was well received by the20 attendees. Representativeswere sent by several governmentaland research organizations, in-cluding MITI, CRIEPI, JAERI, andNPETC, and other organizations,such as Power Reactor & NuclearFuel Development Co., ElectricPower Development Co., Ltd,. Mit-

ing computer models for designand evaluation, and a fuel cell con-trol study.

Prior to joining Nigara Mohawk,Ted was a project engineer atRepublic Steel Corporation withresponsibiltiy for the managementand engineering of plant projectsinvolving instrumentation and con-trol. He was also a projectmanager responsible for themanagement and engineering ofindustrial control equipment fromreceipt of order to completion atWestern Controls Incorporated.

Ted earned a bachelor's degreein electrical engineering from Il-linois Institute of Technology andis a Registered ProfessionalEngineer in New York and the Pro-vince of Ontario.

He began using MMS two yearsago with the goal of improving thereliability and performance ofDuke's nuclear units. He primarilyuses MMS to build small tomedium sized system models thatare detailed enough to enablespecific recommendations to bemade that can be directly appliedto systems in the plant.

Norm has been closely involvedwith MMS since its pre-release,and with B&W and Expert-EASESystems in the development ofnew modules, detailed controlsystem modeling, and the MMS-EASE+ pre- and post-processingpackage.

Charles Sayles — PresidentCharles Sayles is a senior

engineer in the nuclear analysisgroup of Southern CaliforniaEdison's (SCE) general offices inRosemead, California. He receivedhis doctorate in nuclear engineer-ing from Iowa State University andis a l i censed Pro fess iona lEngineer in Cali fornia withchemical, mechanical and nuclearspecialities.

Charles has been with SCE fortwo and one-half years. Prior to jo-ing Edison, he was on the staff ofthe Atomic International Divisionof Rockwell International for 19years. He was involved in thevarious aspects of LMFBR design,including fuel performance, coredesign, system testing, design,and analysis. Many of theseassignments involved transientthermal-hydraulic analyses.

Charles is a member of theAmerican Nuclear Society and theAmerican Institute of ChemicalEngineers. He is vice chairmanand is on the Board of Directors ofthe Los Angeles section of theAmerican Nuclear Society and is incharge of the ANS Speaker'sBureau.

Charles has published over 15technical papers dealing with thevarious aspects of advancednuclear reactor design and isl is ted in "Who 's Who inCalifornia." He and his family fre-quently spend their weekends attheir mountain cabin north of LosAngeles where they cross-countryski in the winter and hike in thesummer.

David WeberVice President

Dave Weber is a graduate ofDrexel University, where he earned

a master's degree in electricalengineering in 1976. He has beenwith Philadelphia Electric Com-pany in the Research and TestingDivision since 1973. Dave is aRegistered Professional Engineerin electrical engineering and con-trol systems in Pennsylvania.

Dave has extensive experiencemodeling and simulating utilitypower plants for control systemanalysis. His recent projects in-clude providing technical supportto the EPRI CGCC Simulator Pro-gram, being responsible for coor-dination and the technical aspectsof a Liquified Natural Gas Plantmodeling study, and working as aconsultant to EPRI on the CoolWater Program Test Committee.Dave has published more than 20papers and reports and is amember of Power EngineeringSociety and Automatic Controls,Instrument Society of America,and Society for Computer Simula-tion.

Dave is currently utilizing MMSon these projects: Colorado-UteCirculating Fluidized Bed BOPmodeling effort. EPRI-sponsoredGas i f i ca t i on Combined-Cyc leSimulator Program, and an in-house modeling effort on PeachBottom Unit 2 (BWR).

Charles Arndt — SecretaryChuck Arndt is a principal

engineer in the power systemsengineering department of DetroitEdison. He is a Registered Profes-sional Engineer in Michigan and isa member of IEEE. Chuck earned abachelor's degree in electricalengineering from the University ofMichigan and a master's degree inelectrical engineering from WayneState University.

Chuck joined the engineeringresearch department of DetroitEdison in 1964 and spent severalyears in the area of instrumenta-tion and measurements. For thepast 10 years, he has worked inthe system analysis group ofresearch, where he specializes inmathematical simulation and con-trol of fossil and nuclear power

plant systems. He has publishedseven papers on generator control,spray cooling modeling, overallpower plant dynamic modeldevelopment, control studies, andcode evaluation.

Chuck has been using MMSsince it was first available on a pre-release basis, with primary em-phasis on the development of aBWR plant model.

Chuck is married and has fourchildren. His hobbies includeamateur radio and cross-countryskiing, but some of his mostpleasurable times are spent sail-ing "Flying Scotts," a type ofsailboat, on Lake St. Clair.

Marvin BelewAdvisory Committee Member

Marvin Belew is a principal elec-tr ical engineer at TennesseeValley Authority. He has 20 yearsof nuclear power plant design con-struction experience. His respon-sibilities have included the designmodification and maintenance ofthe Oak Ridge Reactor, writing testp r o c e d u r e s and p e r f o r m i n gpreoperation tests for commercialnuclear plants, performing elec-trical engineering design for boil-ing water reactors, supervising aBWR instrument and controldesign section, and ensuring thetechnical adequacy of all instru-ment and control design work onTVA power plants.

Marvin is the lead engineer forTVA's Office of Engineer's MMSwork. He has participated in theEPRI MMS User's group since itsinception. This work includesmodeling the Sequoyah NuclearPower Plant auxiliary feedwatersystem for a startup transient;modeling the balance of plant por-tion of TVA's atmospheric fluidiz-ed bed combustion demonstrationplant, which will be connected tothe boiler model being developedby TVA to from a complete powerplant model; and modeling of theSequoyah Nuclear Power Plant toperform design studies of theEPRI/Westinghouse-developed ad-

MMS-EASE + increases engineering productivity by use of interactive graphics.

MMS-EASE+ MakesModel Building Easier

MMS-EASE + is a pre- and post-processor that minimizes theengineering effort required to buildan MMS model. It is designed torun on an IBM personal computer.(The XT is recommended becausethe hard disk eliminates the shuffl-ing of floppies made necessary bythe size of the program.)

The MMS-EASE + so f twaregraphically represents modulescalled "primitives" on the screen.The actual model is built by mov-ing selected primitives to desiredlocations on the model page. Afterthe primitives (components) havebeen placed on the screen, thenext step is to connect them in thedesired configuration. Data inputis done next by placing the screencursor on the component and call-ing up the input data forms. Theseforms are similar to the input datasheets in Vol. 3 of the MMSdocumentation. Default values areprogrammed for use where ap-propriate.

When the component data hasbeen entered, it is t ime toautoparameterize the model. Thisstep generates the equivalent to

the User Worksheets contained inthe User Manual, p rov id ingautomatic model documentation.

At the conclusion of the modelbuilding session, MMS-EASE +assembles the MMS model deck tobe sent to the mainframe. Runresults can also be downloaded tothe PC and plotted using MMS-EASE+.

Ross Schaack of B&W has beenworking with Dr. Alex Long ofExpert-EASE Systems, Inc. duringthe development of MMS-EASE+ .A pre-release version was sent toDuke Power for testing. NormanStambaugh, the principal user atDuke, is very pleased with MMS-EASE+. Norm stated that he builtan E-heater model in two hoursand parameterized the model inone hour. He also said they nowpreform analyses using less thanone-ha l f o f the eng inee r i ngmanhours that were requiredwithout the aid of MMS-EASE + .

MMS-EASE + is available on alicense basis directly from B&W. Asubstantial discount is offered toUser Group Members.

First TrainingSessionConducted

The first B&W/MMS training ses-sion was conducted April 22-26 atthe B&W offices in Lynchburg, VA.The session was attended by 26eng ineers represent ing nineutilities, one national lab and twoarchitect/engineering firms. TornWilson, a B&W senior engineer,was the principal instructor, withassistance from Ross SchaackofB&W and Lance Smith of B&W'sLynchburg Research Center.

Wilson opened the session byp r e s e n t i n g the t h e o r y andbackground of the MMS, He nextgave the attendees a sample pro-blem to model so they could gethands-on experience. The trainingroom was equipped with terminalsand personal computers (for MMS-EASE + ). The training was a com-bination of theory and work onsample problems. One of thehighlights of the training sessionwas the use of hardcopy from un-successful MMS runs. These wereg iven to each at tendee fortroubleshooting. Rather than justlisten to a lecture on errormessages, aborts, etc., eachengineer was able to analyze theoutput and determine the error.

The surveys completed by the at-tendees on the last day of class in-dicated that they were very pleas-ed with the session, and in par-ticular liked the use of hardcopy toanalyze problem runs. They iden-tified the need for more personalcomputers to accommodate theclass size. The attendees' critiqueof the class will be taken into ac-count when future sessions areplanned.

The next training session will beat B&W's Lynchburg facilities onOct. 14-18.
