Brandywine Carriage Driving Show Perpetual Trophies Find a Place to Shine
Did you ever wonder what happened to all the beautiful perpetual trophies that are displayed and awarded at the
Brandywine Pleasure Driving Show after the show? Well, after being engraved with the new winners’ names they were carefully packed into boxes and stored in members’ barns or garages. Many of these trophies have been donated in memory of members who have passed away. How sad that they were only displayed one day a year. Last year the BVDC Board decided to try to find place where the trophies could be displayed and appreciated all year long. Several locations were discussed and pursued including Kendalwood Farm. Members who have attended the Open Houses at Kendalwood will no doubt remember how beautiful their lounge/tack room area is with its lovely woodwork and bright, sunny windows.
PJ and Tara Crowley have outdone themselves creating the perfect display for these wonderful trophies. Their cabinet maker crafted a glass fronted cabinet in the same lovely woodwork as the rest of the room. The trophies are displayed on glass shelves and there is plenty of room to space them out so they can all be appreciated. A huge THANK YOU to PJ and Tara for making this happen. Plans for another Open House at Kendalwood Farm are being discussed. Hopefully BVDC Members will plan to attend not only for the wonderful program, but also to see the Perpetual Trophies shine!

“Marvel Avengers Challenge & Driving Fun Day” at Eden Valley Farm, Spring City, PA
Saturday, August 25th
Time to get creative! Dress up yourself AND your horse as a Marvel superhero…
Spider man, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Silver Surfer, Hulk, Captain America...
We have final details now for our Fun Day: Start time: 10:00 am
Lunch: From noon on
Food: BVDC club will supply grilled hamburgers/hot
dogs, condiments, beverages, paper goods/
utensils. We are asking members to please bring a
covered dish, salad, dessert, or finger food to
share.
What to bring: chair for yourself, water for your
horses
Location Details: John and Penny Hunt's Eden Valley Farm, located at 101 Dairy Road, Spring
City, PA 19475. The farm adjoins the Schuylkill River and has about 200 acres of relatively flat
to very gently rolling terrain. There are tractor trails, gravel roads, and edges of fields or grassed
water swales to drive upon. Mr. Hunt's driving team trains on these trails every day. Every
attempt is being made to make the course VSE friendly. There is a ring in which cones will be set
up for more variety.
Scavenger Hunt Details: There will be a question sheet given to each whip/groom at the beginning
of the drive, clipboards to write upon if necessary, and the answers to the questions will be in the
form of characters, masks, weapons, and other "clues" hung on trees along the trail. First prize at
the end will be a hug by Iron Man, a Photo OP with Iron Man, and a personal invitation to one of
Tony Stark’s parties. Kidding, of course. Or maybe not?

Driving Instructor/Trainer Profile: Susie Buchanan
Location: Mercer Hill Farm, 1220 Doe Run Road, Coatesville,
PA 19320 Phone: 610-380-4861 Email: [email protected]
Susie’s background: A native of Scotland, Susie has a long
history of involvement with the equestrian sport world, having
been a founding member of the United States Dressage Association, The Delaware Valley Combined Training Association, and of The Eastern States Dressage Association.
Susie was a recognized judge for both Dressage and Combined Training for many years, as well as being a British Horse Society
“Institute of The Horse” instructor, for which she qualified with the highest score ever
recorded, and for which she subsequently sat on the Board of Examiners. She was also a National Examiner for the United States Pony Clubs, Inc.
Susie was introduced to driving in 1992 by Lana Wright, a pioneer in so many areas of equestrian sports. Within
one year, Susie was competing in CDE’s and not long afterwards in Pleasure Driving shows. Now more than 20 years later, Susie still loves to compete, and also to teach
and train at every level, and with every breed and type of horse.
Susie’s philosophy: “How do we feel to our horses? How
can we help them feel good about themselves… and
about us? How can we enhance this extraordinary partnership… make it more safe, more expressive, more
beautiful.” More info: Susie has her own horses/ponies that can be used for lessons. She is willing to
travel to another location to give lessons (for an additional $10 fee). She accepts students at all levels: Pre-novice through Advanced. Her expertise and experience includes both Combined Driving and Pleasure Driving.
“Any special problems deserve special solutions...we have many methods!”
Comments from Patty Lollot who recently participated in a clinic with Susie: “Susie answered questions freely, noting that there is no such thing as a silly question. She easily re-phrased explanations to help each driver understand a point. She was quick to praise and had an uncanny ability to tell you what a horse was going to do before it actually did it. She kept the instruction lively with a good sense of humor, which helped relax drivers… One of Susie’s innovations is what is referred to as “the wheel”. Essentially it’s an 8-spoke wagon wheel formation comprised of cones and cavaletti. During the course of each lesson, it offered a myriad of driving exercises to improve the suppleness, straightness, and bending of the horse. It was also instrumental in developing the driver’s eyes and aids.”

BVDC General Membership Meeting held on July 15th
with Jerry Trapani - at Eden Hill Farm Jerry Trapani came all the way from Long Island, NY to be our guest speaker.
About 20 BVDC members were in attendance to hear Jerry share his wealth of
knowledge with our club on two topics which are summarized below. If you missed
this meeting, I highly recommend taking advantage of any opportunity to hear Jerry
speak in the future as he is an excellent speaker!
Topic #1 - CAA Driver Proficiency Testing Process Jerry explained the difference
between Level 1 and 2 in this way:
Level 1 is like a high school degree and by comparison Level 2 is
like a master’s degree. Safety and education are the key
objectives of Level 1 -- Jerry had some great pictorial examples
showing unsafe harness and carriage fit. This testing process was originally created by the British Driving Society
and is recognized around the world, however it has been Americanized for use in the U.S. The program does not
“teach” but rather it “evaluates” the knowledge you have. Level 1 testing is not for complete beginners but those
with one year’s driving experience should be able to pass it easily. A CAA membership is not required for Level 1
certification but is required for higher levels. Level 1 asks you to demonstrate basic driving skills to show that you
can control your horse and sufficiently negotiate figures. Jerry was able to achieve all 3 levels in about three years.
In 2011 he was an evaluator for Level 1 and is now certified to evaluate Level 2. There is a syllabus that can be
ordered from the CAA which provides all the questions covered by the testing process; the answers are not included
- you must research the answers yourself!
Topic #2 - Barefoot vs. Shoes Jerry talked about how to maintain healthy hoof function and showed lots of great pictures to
illustrate different aspects. He noted that a horse lands heel first so this is why studs should be
placed at the end of the crease (slightly forward of the heels) to reduce the jarring impact to the
leg. He talked about how to prepare the hooves for pulling the shoes before going barefoot to
minimize the effect of the sudden change. A “sole callous” develops behind the white line
which is needed for support on a barefoot hoof. Maintenance of barefoot hooves in between
trims includes rolling the edges to avoid splits and cracks. The hoof is like a modified sponge
which goes from wet to dry and this can lead to abscesses from sand
getting into the hoof and working it’s way up. A worn shoe can tell
you a lot about how the horse has been moving and possibly about pending lameness, for
example a horse with hock soreness will drag its hind toes. Jerry talked about the effect of
pads, noting that the frog must make contact with the ground in order to maintain good
circulation so a frog support pad can be used to mimic this pressure on the frog. Jerry
recommended the use of a laser
thermometer (see picture at right -
about $50 at Home Depot) as a
great tool for determining the
surface temperature of a hoof, for example when trying to
find abscesses which may cause a spike of 5-15 degrees that
you may not be able to detect with your hand. It also works
on detecting abnormal heat in the leg.

Update on planning for the 1st Glen Willow CDE
by Dan Rosenthal (Organizing Committee)
There has been some discussion about how Glen Willow will be the "no
frills" version of the Laurels. I am not entirely certain that I know what a frill
is in this context so I thought I'd share some thoughts and a progress report.
Glen Willow is going to be fun for competitors and spectators and will be as well organized and well presented as
those of us who are working on it can possibly make it. It won't be the amazing spectacle that was the Laurels (and
for the record I loved the spectacle) and there are a few things we will not have - terrier races (unless Mary Mott
accepts my challenge to have Anna and Maggie race), art show, antique cars, jazz band outside the cones course
(my pony Skip is delighted with this news as he is not a big fan of jazz bands), air conditioned bathrooms (I will
miss those), 24/7 open bar, a village of vendor tents.
We will have that fabulous place (the Strouds and Newt Brosius' team have worked hard to fix up the grounds and
we have a lot more work planned for the next few weeks - please feel free to volunteer your time), a deeply
dedicated committee who is working to make the show happen, the only 3 day CDE in the Northeast (I think)
AND one that is open to Training Level (you only have to do Section E). We will have great volunteers managed
by Bobbi Hager as always. We will have all four levels of competition through Advanced and terrific officials from
this continent and Europe. We will have stables in the usual spot. We will have vendors who will be there in their
trailers or tents. We will have a giant tent for people to relax and watch the competition - for free and with food
and beverages for sale and open to everyone except for an area down in the front which will be for those who are
helping us with the money we so desperately need to make this work (a million thank you's to those who have
sent checks and an unabashed plea for donations to those who are still on the fence or waiting to send them). We
will have a party after the briefing and a competitors' party on Saturday night with music and adult beverages on
hand. We will have a challenging course through the surrounding area with the hill we have all come to love and
anticipate. We will probably have other things that I can't think of right now. Not exactly 100% without frills, just
not quite as frilly as it once was but hey - this is our first year and frills take a while to grow in the drought we are
having in this area.
Dates: September 7-9, 2012
Entries Close: August 15
Levels/Divisions: Training, Preliminary, Intermediate, Advanced

Brandywine Valley Driving Club
Board meeting - Tuesday, July 10, 2012
Board Members attending: Debby Donovan, Tim Canavan, Debbie Wolf, Pat Kozakowski, Debbie Camplone, Teresa Palumbo, Merrill Waters, Ellen Gallagher (by phone)
Review of Minutes: Debby Donovan made a motion to accept the minutes from the May meeting and was seconded by Tim Canavan.
Treasurer’s Report: A detailed report is available from the secretary but a brief report is as such:
Reporting Period 5/9/2012 through 7/10/2012
Beginning Balance 15,885.08
Income 306. 49
Expenses * 2,216. 83 *this includes escrow for mailings, Insurance, the 990 Filing increase, etc.
Balance 13,668.25
Debbie Camplone made the motion to approve the report and seconded by Debbie Wolf.
Teresa Palumbo reported that the Continuous Drive held on May 27 made a profit of $62.88
Nominating Committee:
The members of the 2012 Nominating Committee include Pat Kozakowski, Debbie Wolf and Cindy Boddy. Several names were recommended at the meeting as potential nominees and will be contacted to ask if they are willing to serve on the Board for the 2013 – 2014 term.
Education and Programs Committee:
Preparations are being finalized for the General Meeting on July15th. Our guest speaker, Jerry Trapani will be an overnight guest at Pat & John Kozakowski’s Farm. The club will supply the food and drink for lunch.
Anna is working on the possibility of an Equine Message Demo by Tara Crowley for late Oct. /early Nov in conjunction with an Open House at Kendalwood Farm. Teresa Palumbo has been in touch with P J Crowley as he is very interested in holding another junior driver clinic this year.
More ideas were put forth for an additional general meeting in 2012.
We are in need of new and additional volunteers for the Holiday Party -- more information on the volunteer positions needed for the Party will be made available to members soon.
Newsletter & Website Committee:
It was suggested by Bobbi Hager that education links provided by 3rd parties be added to the website. Ellen Gallagher will look into this as a way to provide education and information for club members and enable the providers of this information to get exposure from us (as a club) in return.
Membership Committee:
Bobbi sent a report that there are currently 13 new members and that a total of 59 did not re-new. Debby will ask Bobbi to send us if possible the names of the non-renewed members to see if we can find out why they have chosen not to renew.
Clinic / Special Events Committee:
No clinic report for Suzy Stafford but it seems as though the hazard clinic most likely will not happen this
15 August 2012
year. The logistics are too costly at this time but we will re-consider for the 2013 calendar.
Cones clinics have been going well, so we will probably run the summer series again next year.
Suzy is still investigating arrangements for a Paul Maye clinic this year.
Pleasure Show / Teddy Bear Picnic Committee:
Bobbi Hager confirmed that Teddy Bear Picnic will be held at Fair Hill on October 28th and the clinic confirmed for the 27th.
We discussed the idea for next year of working with other clubs to put together a series challenge (like the Whip Challenge in the past).
We also are looking into other venues for club shows next year (in addition to Canvasback Farm).
Recreational (Pleasure) Drive Committee:
Merrill Walters reported that the planning for Fun Day is moving ahead. It will take place on August 25th and begin at 10AM and run till 12PM with a picnic afterwards. Members are asked to bring their own water and covered dish. The club will provide burgers and hot dogs (Merrill will supply the grill). There is a scavenger hunt planned (with clues) as you drive the wonderful trails at the Hunt’s Farm.
Fall drives will be held at The Daniel Boone Homestead hosted by Susan Rigg-Pannabecker and another drive hosted by Darrell and Katherine Martin. Dates to be announced.
OLD Business:
Mary Wark asked that the club consider supplying volunteers to decorate the hazards for the Glenn Willow CDE; an e-blast will be sent regarding this request.
There was no response to the request for BVDC members to be listed as trainers/instructors in a directory. It was suggested that we start to highlight members in the newsletter as we did for introducing board members so each month members will be included in this manner in the newsletter.
NEW Business:
ADS weekend-Teresa Palumbo will be coordinating the breakfast on Saturday. She has volunteers to prepare and serve food. BVDC will donate a Sunny Print to the silent auction.
Ann Councill requested that BVDC lend support to the PA Horse Expo in 2013 to be held the last weekend in Feb (23rd) in Harrisburg, PA
Meeting adjourned @ 9:20 PM
Respectfully submitted; Pat Kozakowski
