Chief Officer’s Report Welcome to the Spring edition of the BUZZ newsletter. You will see inside that SSCVA recently facilitated a Volunteering Masterclass at the District Council offices. This was an extremely well-attended event, with a very diverse cross-section of interests represented. The one thing we all had in common was a determination to celebrate the many volunteering efforts locally. It was a very practical event, with speakers highlighting the key issues to think about, with a number of workshops gathering views and feedback on the way forward. We are currently writing up a fuller summary of the event, which will be circulated with an invitation to become involved in helping to draft a Volunteering Strategy for the District. We are particularly grateful to our speakers Gavin Williamson MP and Phil Pusey from SCVYS, facilitators Nigel Barrett from Age UK, Katherine Johnson from VAST, and Imre Tolgyesi, and help from Maggie Quinn in putting the event together. We recently said goodbye and good luck to Timon Scheven, one of our CATALYST Development Workers, who has moved on to a new role with Talentmatch Staffordshire. We are sure that Timon will be equally successful in his new role. We also send our very best wishes to Emily Simmonds who has had a variety of roles at SSCVA and who will shortly be going on maternity leave. It’s still business as usual in the meantime, and we are once more promoting the next round of Community Voice Forums to be held next month – please see inside for dates and venues. We hope to see you there.

S S C V A

Good Luck Timon!

In February Staff and volunteers of SSCVA said a fond farewell to Timon Scheven and wished him well in his future job at Support Staffordshire Lichfield on the Talent Match Project. Timon worked at SSCVA for nearly two years as a Development Officer on the Catalyst project.

Following a successful 8 month pilot (2014/15) supporting people with long term health conditions, the frail elderly and carers, we have been successful in securing a further 12 months of funding from the South Staffordshire Partnership.

We will continue to provide this FREE service to help people to live more independently, improve their overall wellbeing, decrease isolation and help them to live more safely at home and in the local community.

If you know of someone who has a long term health condition who may be struggling or is over 75, lonely and isolated then (with their permission) contact the Community Support Officer on 01902 851675.

Emily, our current Community Support Officer is going on maternity leave from 1st April, and we will let you know the officer covering her role once they have been appointed.

Supported Volunteering

If you or someone you know has a physical or learning disability or are frail elderly and looking to volunteer, we can support them into volunteering by providing a Buddy to attend with them to volunteer.

nationally and regionally. Gavin Williamson MP, later quoted, “It was an honour to be asked to give the keynote speech at the SSCVA masterclass last week. The SSCVA do such a fantastic job and I hope that many more people will take part in this extremely rewarding activity.”

Healthwatch Staffordshire is the independent consumer champion for health and social care in your local area, delivered by Engaging Communities Staffordshire. Their job is to argue for the consumer interests of those using health and social care services across the county, and give local people an opportunity to speak out about their concerns and health care priorities. Healthwatch Staffordshire needs your help. If you have used any Health or Social Care Service recently, Healthwatch Staffordshire would really like to hear from you. Since the 1st of January 2015, Healthwatch Staffordshire has recevied over new 100 reviews on the Experience Exchange platform, this result has provided them with some interesting insights into how people are rating services in Staffordshire. Generally the majority of the reviews and feedback left on the exchange has been positive, with the most common issue raised by service users being waiting times. As you may know Experience Exchange is part of our ongoing commitment to making sure that the public can get honest feedback and information on service providers. They hope to make this as easy as possible by putting all Staffordshire Health and Social Care service providers in one easy to use website. You can see reviews from other people on anything from GP Surgeries to Hospitals and Care Homes or you could post your own experience for others to see

You can access Experience Exchange by going to the website: http://x2.healthwatchstaffordshire.co.uk/

Alternatively if you prefer you can ring the Healthwatch Staffordshire Freephone number on 0800 051 8371, and leave feedback with one of the team members.

Please share this information throughout your organisation and with friends and family members

Women’s Empowerment Fund The Department for Communities and Local Government launched a £250,000 fund to support projects that empower women today. This is an exciting and new opportunity for charities and voluntary groups to bid for between £2,000 - £20,000 to support work that will empower women and give them the skills and confidence to take a full role in their communities and in particular to challenge the circumstances where abuse including child sexual exploitation can occur. The Department for Communities and Local Government expects to allocate funds to between 10-20 different voluntary and community groups across the country. Funding is available for one year only.

Further details including how to apply, the prospectus, application form and criteria can be found at:

Building Better Communities Jewson is giving away £100,000 to help build better communities. They are awarding funding between £1,000 and £50,000 to community projects that make a real difference to the lives of local people, now and in the future. The award scheme from Jewson building supplies to fund a small number of community building projects across the country. Tell them about your project - it may be a new roof for your village hall, a sensory garden for local school children or the renovation of a long-forgotten community building. They will produce a shortlist of nominated projects, then communities will be asked to vote on which to support. With voting closed, a panel will pick regional winners to receive support of £1,000 and £5,000. One lucky project will also receive the main £50,000 prize. Deadline is 12th April 2015.

Great ide-as for community safety solutions come from local people - which is why Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis is inviting groups in Staffordshire and Stock-on-Trent to bid for money from the Commissioners’ people Power Fund.

The fund empowers local groups to find solutions to community safety problems through small grants of between £100 and £3000.

These could range from the provision of positive activities for young people with the aim of reducing anti-social behaviour (ASB) in a local community, mentoring programmes for targeted groups in a community through to funding reassurance activities and respect events in specific areas.

With the support of the local Community Safety Partnership (CSP), community based organisations, either solely or in collaboration with others can make an application.

Two rounds of funding will be held by the Commissioner, the first which opens on 1st march and closes on 14th April, the second which opens on 1st August and closes on 14th September.

The Olive Branch Programme was initially launched in mid 2007 following the tragic fire death of Olive Simcock. One of the lessons learnt following her death was for key agencies to engage in closer partnership working to better communicate and refer vulnerable persons to the appropriate agency or organisation.

Staffordshire Fire & Rescue are committed to reducing the number of accidental dwelling fires which result in injury or death for the most vulnerable members of our communities through partnership working.

Olive Branch Training is completely FREE of charge.

The aim is to ensure that all front line home visitors involved with caring for the elderly, disabled and vulnerable on a regular basis, are trained to identify hazards and vulnerabilities within the home and to understand and know how to deal with and reduce the risks.

In addition, Olive Branch training will inform & train home visitors to identify when to refer to Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service for a Home Fire Risk Check, thus enabling the Fire Service to engage with our most vulnerable community members, to give advice on Fire Safety in the Home and provide any necessary smoke alarms or assisted technology equipment to ensure the occupants are as safe as possible.

Olive Branch training sessions will be taking place in five locations across Staffordshire. These sessions are open to all partners. 20 places are available at each location. If you would like further information or would like to book a place on one of the sessions show below please call 01785 898559 or email: [email protected]

Local boys chosen to attend World Scout Jamboree in Japan 2015

Four Wombourne Scouts, Haydn Willetts, Ryan Champion, Daniel Perks and James Platten have been selected from 3rd Wombourne Scout Unit to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan, in July 2015. They were chosen following an intensive selection activity day at Beaudesert Campsite in January 2014 and they will be representing our county of West Mercia and of course the United Kingdom in Japan in 2015. 30,000 scouts from around the world will be attending the Jamboree. As part of this fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime experience, the young people will spend 12 nights at camp, 3 nights in Tokyo and 3 nights in home hospitality in the prefecture of Kochi. The boys and their families, with the fantastic support of 3rd Wombourne Scout Group, are busy fundraising, as each scout needs to raise £2995 for the Jamboree and hopefully a little extra to cover additional necessary costs. To date, the boys and their parents have organised a Quiz night, Ladies night, Band/Disco night, washed lots of cars down at Halfpenny Green Vineyards, packed bags at Sainsbury’s Wombourne and held a Pig Racing night, but not with real pigs!! All 4 boys were successful in applying for Individual Grants of £250 each from South Staffordshire Council with help from Timon at South Staffordshire Community & Voluntary Action. This grant has helped bring down the total required. Dan, Haydn, Ryan and James are hoping to come back from the Jamboree in July 2015 and share their amazing experiences with their community in Wombourne. To find out more about what the young people will be doing in Japan, go to http://www.23wsj.jp
