BUYER’S GUIDE

A PIECE OF HISTORYMogens Graae lived as a trapper in the harsh North East Greenland from 1946-48. Polar trappers lived alone and isolated with their dogs most of the time, in very harsh conditions up to one year at a time. The clothing and gear they used was extremely primitive compared to the Arctic gear of today. After his return Mogens Graae began to invent and develop equipment that would improve the conditions of arctic trappers and explorers, and founded Musk Ox. Shortly after the Sirius patrol started to use Mogens Graae’s survival gear.
Today Musk Ox still produce Mogens Graae´s timeless and unique designs, staying true to Musk Ox’s utilitarian heritage.

With the Sirius patrol in mind, Mogens Graae developed Arctic survival gear like tents, hollow fiber sleeping bags, sleds and the Arctic Parka Coat. The Sirius Patrol was founded in 1941, and to this day operate under extreme conditions in the harsh north eastern parts of Greenland, where proper equipment and clothing is vital for survival.
Many explorers around the globe has benefitted from Mogens Graae’s experience and creativity. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest, was one.
When Hillary crashed his sled on his 1958 South Georgia expedition, he was saved by virtue of Graae’s inventive sled design. Following this incident, Hillary was instrumental in giving name to Graae’s Glacier as a token of appreciation for the man and his visionary designs.

THE HUNTER VEST
The Hunter Vest is based on the detachable wool lining of the Original Hunter Jacket, designed by Mogens Graae in 1962 by the request of Denmarks largest hunting shop.
The Vest comes with suede enforcements for preventing wear, and the MO Dry-ventile shell makes the Vest water resistant, breathable and extremely durable.

The MO dry-ventile fabric is developed in collaboration with our ambassadors who have been working as Sirius patrol members in extreme conditions in the far northeast of Greenland. The fabric is made of 60% cotton and 40% Nylon. This material combination, tight weaving process and Teflon coating makes the fabric breathable, water resistant and very durable.

Towards the end of the 1880’s, British Millerain began to develop fabrics to suit a wide variety of clothing requirements, from the rigours of life in the armed forces to the demands of country pursuits.
Through more than a century of refinement, development and testing, they have earned a reputation as the leading manufacturer of waxed cottons and practical, aesthetic fabrics for outdoor applications.

In 2011 Öztekin Tekstil introduced the product Wolly. Wolly is made of 100% lamb’s wool. It is 100% organic and doesn’t contain any chemical substances.

The musk ox ambassador program is a program were Sirius Patrol member’s helps to develop products that are functional in the toughest weather conditions.
All our ambassadors have been operating in Extreme conditions in the far north east of Greenland. Through their knowledge and experience, they contribute to develop products that can improve exploxers conditions which was also Mogens Graaes vision when he founded Musk ox in 1950.

WILD FINN RACOON FUR COLLAR
On the original Arctic Parka coat developed for the Sirius Patrol in 1960 by Mogens Graae, real fur collar was used for the hood.
Real fur has great insulating qualities and is naturally moisture and snow repellent, which is highly advantageous in snowstorms and Arctic weather.
Today Musk Ox use fur collars sourced from the Wild Finn Raccoon. Fur from the Wild Finn Raccoon is a byproduct of culling, and these animals live free in nature and are not bred in captivity.
The Wild Finn Raccoon is native to Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. It is not anendangered species and has never lived in captivity. In fact the population is growing, and culling of the species is therefore needed to keep equilibrium in its natural habitats.All laws and regulations within the EU concerning welfare of animals are respected.

He knew that wool was a very good material for cold and wet conditions, since it has great insulating qualities, even when wet.
The Icelandic Wool Sweater is made from pure Icelandic wool. Today you see Musk Ox wool sweaters more than 50 years old yet still fully functional.

Wool processing has been a trade in Mosfellsbaer since 1896, previously with the company Álafoss of Iceland. In 1991, the company Ístex was formed and took over the wool processing.
Istex buys wool directly from farmers in Iceland and then process it to yarn. The wool scouring happens in the town Blönduós in north of Iceland and the spinning mill resides in the town Mosfellsbaer nearby Reykjavik.
Because of its numerous qualities, Mogens Graae only used Álafoss icelandic wool when making wool sweaters for the Sirius patrol. Today the Musk Ox wool sweaters are made exactly the same way, still handknitted with Álafoss icelandic wool using the original Musk Ox patterns.
