In April we celebrate the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha. To me,

part of the significance of this cel-ebration is the recognition of the possibility of change. The birth of the Buddha in the world signifies an acknowledgment that no matter how stuck we may become, there is the potential for my life to change. As a Buddhist, I try to be aware of when my thinking becomes static, to relax my hold on my opinions and open my mind to other pos-sibilities.

In this spirit, our guest speaker for this year’s Hanamatsuri service on Sunday, April 6, 2014, is Swami Atmananda. She is a fol-lower of the Hindu faith, and will share her experiences and some of the practices of this religious cousin of Buddhism.

Please join us for this special service and don’t forget to come early to bathe the Baby Buddha!

BUSSHIN APRIL 2014

We started out in January rather quietly on Thursday, January

16, 2014, with our first meet of the year, and a day of knitting with the guidance of Renie Yoshida Grohl on the 30th.

On February 20th, we held our annual New Year luncheon un-der the able chairmanship of Alice Shibata and Miyo Shigemoto. It turned out to be a great success. We wish to express our grateful thank you to Gloria Fujimoto for her generous donation of the many varieties of fruit that greatly enhanced our lunch table. Thank you so very much, Gloria, we a ppreciate your thoughtfulness. Jean Nakazono took over the chairmanship.

Our Rev. Bridge took over the entertainment portion of the event which was an interesting movie produced by the filmmaker, Ken-taro Sugao of Brazil. “Streams of

Light” I think is a very interest-ing title for a movie such as this. I understand many of you have al-ready had the opportunity to view this movie. Kentaro Sugao is not only a filmmaker, but also a minis-ter of the Jodo Shinshu sect in Bra-zil. In his quest to propagate Jodo Shinshu in his country (Brazil) he used historical materials, including letters & films as well as interviews with the ministers presently residing in the United States to get a picture of the history of the propagation of Jodo Shinshu in the West. It is a movie well worth your time to see. Our grateful thank you to Rev. Bridge for obtaining the film and for his technical expertise in showing us this very interesting and heartwarming film. I do hope everyone will have an opportunity to be able to see the movie.

For those ladies who are working on their knitting garments,

Renie will be unable to attend our March meets so she has set the day of Thurs. March 27, as our next workshop, starting from 10:00 a.m.

On Thursday, March 6, 2014, we will be traveling to Rohnert Park to enjoy a day at the new casino, “Graton”. Three members of the church Board will be transporting and returning the members to and back to church on that day. The drivers will be Dick Sasaki, Don Kaneshige and Maya Lawrence. The Momiji Kai thanks these drivers in advance for their kind services.

Thank you’s are also in order to the following: Dennis Katayama, for your most generous donation to the club; to Brian Nagata, for your donation of the “Motanai” all purpose bags for each of us; Mary Hiromoto for (2) one lb bags of Peets coffee; and to Shig and Nami Naito for their generous donation.
