Let Us Gather and Dance in Joy and Gratitudeby ReveRend HaRRy Gyokyo bRidGe

August is a very special month. Not because the

minister traditionally gets va-cation in August (though that is certainly nice), but because of the Obon Service. This year is unusual in that the Bon Odori or Obon Dance is hap-pening on the last day of July and the Obon and Hatsubon Services are on the first day of August – usually they are both in August, but please don’t be confused!

Actually Obon, whether the dance or the service, embodies one of the deep contradictions of Buddhism. Obon is a time when we remember our loved ones who have passed away. We might expect this to be a somber event filled with sad-ness. And yet, we dance. The Obon service is also known as “Kangi-e” or “Gathering of Joy.” How can we associate loss with joy? Especially for our Hatsubon families, who are observing their first Obon since their loss.

Buddhism does not deny loss, it does not negate the sadness we feel. But it also asks us to look beyond these feelings, to see not only what we have lost but also what we have received through our relationship. When we deeply reflect, we find that our life was sustained and enriched, through both the good times and the bad, and through this reflection we discover joy and gratitude, manifesting in “Namo Amida Butsu,” manifesting in the dance of the Bon Odori.

Our guest speaker for this year’s Obon Service is Rev. Zuikei Taniguchi from the Buddhist Temple of Alameda. We are very fortunate to have many of the former ministers of the Buddhist Church of Oak-land still in the area, so I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to listen to one of them preach the Dharma to us at this special service.

President’s Musingsby Steve teRuSaki

I wanted to start off this month by thanking the en-

tire Sangha for their dedicated efforts and solid support in making this year’s Nikkoland Bazaar another roaring suc-cess. The energy and commit-ment of everyone required to pull off the Bazaar is amazing. I take my hat off to each and every one of you. For me, it took a half a week at least to recover from the two-day event; every afternoon trying desperately not to fall asleep at my desk in front of my col-league, Brian Nagata. I would like to especially acknowledge Jon Takagaki, chairperson for this year’s event for his leader-ship in dealing with the myriad of issues that arise during an event such as this in his calm and diplomatic way.

During bazaar, several of you came up to me to tell me how much you enjoy reading this column. I sometimes wonder if there is an audience out there; and so your affirmations of this column give me increased will to continue to put forth these musings. It does seem that the first of the month comes around sooner and sooner; and I’m constantly at wits end

trying to find something mean-ingful to write about. For this month, I would like to share with you some of the thoughts on this year’s Pacific Seminar sponsored by the CBE and IBS at the Jodo Shinshu Center at the end of June. The theme of the seminar was Shinran’s Path in America - Past and Pres-ent. The focus of the weekend was on the Nikkei experience during the war and the many stories and experiences of the Nisei and how it has been manifested in our temples in the years since. Interwoven among the historical aspects of the weekend were wonderful opportunities for discussion on the Jodo Shinshu teach-ings with the ministers and lay speakers who were present. I particularly enjoyed the pro-vocative discussions with Rev. Tetsuo Unno who helped me gain a deeper understanding of the importance of the expe-riential and emotive aspects of understanding the Nembutsu teachings that is integral to a life of gratitude and shinjin. Also, the energy and enthusi-asm about Jodo Shinshu was seen in Mr. George Teraoka’s (Fowler) talk. I would love

to invite George, father of Ms. Janet Umezu, to come to Oakland to share with you his enthusiasm and under-standing of the Jodo Shinshu teachings. Ms. Anne Spencer (Idaho-Oregon minister’s assis-tant and current candidate for Tokudo) spoke as a new mem-ber/convert and expressed her profound appreciation to the Nisei and their experiences in creating a sangha that is so ac-cepting and so generous. One of her comments was that one knows when one has been fully accepted into the temple family by having one’s name shows up on the Toban or Bazaar work shifts – without being asked, nor without fanfare --- it is at that moment that one has arrived as a full Sangha mem-ber. There were a plethora of additional stories and remem-brances; some with tears of joy and gratitude; others with tears of pain and suffering for those who had gone before us. It was an incredible weekend and one that I will remember and reflect upon. I would like to thank Rev. Umezu and the CBE staff for their hard work in organizing the event. I en-courage you to take advantage of these great seminars offered by the CBE; and encourage you to continue to support these

programs through donations to the 21st Century Campaign and to the CBE directly.

On the Roof Renovation front, thank you to all the donors who have generously contributed to the Campaign. A listing of donors through June 29th is included in this month’s Busshin. The total monies received to date from individual contributors is $99,170 plus an additional $22,775 in unpaid pledges for a total of $121,945. An addi-tional $41,927 has been gener-ated from “seed” money from various Church accounts that can be dedicated to church facilities maintenance. Tak-ing these together, the total campaign monies as of the end of June 2010 now stands at $163,872 - 41% of our campaign goal of $400,000. Thank you to all of our con-tributors to the Campaign. To those who are still contemplat-ing their donations, please find again a donation/pledge form in this month’s Busshin. Your contribution to the Campaign is important as the contractor has begun molding the new roof dragons; the flat roof over the Little Chapel is re-roofed; and painting of the lower areas of church building begins. Please find it within yourselves

to send in your contribution to the church office at your earli-est convenience.

Obon is just around the corner. Ms. June Masuyama has been working behind the scenes to ensure that prepara-tions are all in place. Work shifts for the Obon Festival efforts were published in last month’s Busshin. Please review and let the church office, or the shift captain know if there are conflicts with your schedule. Also, if for some reason you are NOT listed, and have the time to come out and help, your efforts will be greatly appreci-ated. There are many areas that need your help, including the construction and deconstruc-tion of the yagura and odori area on Jackson Street; grilling in the Imagawayaki booth; and kitchen help for food prepara-tion and clean-up, so please contact June Masuyama at [email protected].

This year, we have initiated a new program to honor past family members during the Obon Festival. The Numata Center has donated lanterns which we will offer to individ-uals who wish to honor their past family members. For a do-nation of $35 per lantern, you can have your family member’s name written on tags (either

in kanji, or English) that will hang from the lanterns. These lanterns will be placed on the wires above the odori (danc-ing) area on Jackson Street. Lanterns and their tags will be provided to the family after the Obon festival. Forms for this program are included in this month’s Busshin and need to be returned to the church of-fice by Monday, July 26th. All proceeds from this program will go to support the Roof Renovation Campaign.

As we go into July, plan to come and refresh your dance steps at odori practices start-ing the week of July 12th; and please calendar Sunday July 18th for the Church Picnic to be held again at Pleasant Hill Park on Gregory Lane in Pleasant Hill. Have a great summer!

President’s MusingsContinued from previous page

I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the Sangha and

friends of the temple who worked so tirelessly on bazaar construction, purchasing, food preparation, working in the booths, cleaning up, and all the other activities that togeth-er, made the 2010 Nikkoland

Bazaar such a huge success. I am grateful to the bazaar com-mittee chairs for their commit-ment and leadership prior to and during bazaar weekend. We could not have had such a wonderful event without their collaborative spirit and dedi-cated effort.

As I roamed the bazaar areas throughout the weekend, I constantly heard compliments from our guests about our deli-cious food, from our chicken, steak, sushi and udon, to the snack bar menu, imagawayaki, and pastries. I also heard nice comments about how our bingo is so much fun because of our consolation games and money balls, as well as the super nice game and bingo prizes, gift shop choices, and silent auc-tion items. This is a reflection

of all the hard work and care that each of you contribute.

There were many, many temple members and friends of BCO who were not on the volunteer schedule but worked tirelessly throughout the week-end wherever they were need-ed. There are too many people to name individually but their efforts did not go unnoticed and I want to recognize their contributions. For me, this represents the true meaning of Sangha and dana and I feel privileged to be part of such a generous and caring Sangha.

Thank you again and I look forward to seeing all of you at the 2011 Nikkoland Bazaar.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer, and hope

everyone enjoyed both the Bazaar and the church picnic. Recently the Jr. YBA took their annual trip to San Luis Obispo, and it was awesome! A significant difference in attendance this year because there were only a certain number of people selected. Seniors and juniors were picked first, then by seniority to the Jr. Yba. Well, enjoy summer while it lasts and see you at Church!
