The findings underscore Singapore’s importance as business gateway to Southeast Asia.”

The number of business visitors rose to 3.2 million in 2011, an increase of 2.6 per cent from 2010, and forming 24 per cent of total visitorship to Singapore. The expenditure by these business visitors also rose by 4.1 per cent to an estimated S$5.6 billion contributing 25 per cent of total tourism re-ceipts.

Added Shantha De Silva, Director of Operations, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia & the Philippines, InterContinental Hotels Group,

Sichuan Airlines to launch direct flights to Melbourne

BY NABILA GOH

Premier of Victoria announced new measures to promote tourism in Australia among the Chinese Nationals

China’s Sichuan Airlines is launching a service to con-nect Chengdu, China to Melbourne, Australia. Sichuan airlines would now be flying from Chengdu to Mel-bourne three times weekly, said Ted Baillieu, Premier of Victoria. The Chinese airline is also looking to establish their headquarters in Melbourne too. Established in the late 1980s, Sichuan Airlines launched its first international route in June this year.

Currently, only China Eastern, China Southern and Air China has direct flights from China to Melbourne.

“Direct air services between Melbourne and Chengdu will increase business, education and tourism ties be-tween Victoria and China,” the Premier said at a trade mission to China.

Chengdu, a key force in China’s economic growth, is one of the largest cities in Western China with a popu-lation of 14.7 million.

According to tourism Victoria, Australia is getting in-creasing popular with Chinese Tourists as the number of Chinese Tourists has increased by 27%.

More business travellers heading to China for meetingsWhy China tops the list for business travellers

While the global economic climate worldwide remaining challenged with the Eurozone crisis and the fluctuations in the US economy, statistics from the Chinese meetings in-dustry seem to indicate otherwise.

Over the last twelve months the meetings industry in China has continued to grow with high numbers of events being organised by all buyers. Nearly two thirds of buyers saw an increase in the volume of events they were involved in over the last twelve months. 72% also predict use of new des-tinations over the next 12 months although the countries with highest volume of events for the next 12 months are identical to those for the last 12 months.

The rapid development of cities and regions throughout China seems likely to influence the range of destinations being used for meetings and events in future with 72% of buyers predicting use of new destinations next year. This also applies to the outbound business from China.

Although Asian countries continue to attract the greater proportion of the events business, many other countries worldwide have realised the valuable potential in China’s expanding number of business visitors and are focusing their marketing strategy in order to attract them further afield.
