B2 The Mission Record Thursday, June 14, 2012
There are many policy areas that the Mission Chamber is continuing to advance on
behalf of members. Beyond the recent acceptance of the Fraser River Policy Resolutions at the B.C. Chamber AGM, the Mission Chamber also supported new resolutions that advocate for curbing of the Property Transfer Tax, the providing process for better accountability and transparency for Local Government, a registration of buildings used for marijuana grow operations and online provincial and municipal voting.
More than 30 new policy resolutions were adopted at this year’s BC Chamber of Commerce AGM and the Chamber will leverage these resolutions to the benefi t of the membership.
Additionally, the Chamber continues
to work with local governments for the adaptation of a Fraser Valley mobile business licensing program. Communities from Surrey and Pitt Meadows to Hope are looking to develop a program that would allow businesses to work in this accepted economic region.
For service business, such as contractors, home care and caterers, this could reduce red tape and costs by as much as $2,000 annually.
On a local level, the Chamber has offered its support to the District of Mission development of a sustainable long-term
plan for the downtown core.
The Chamber believes in order to draw investment to downtown there is a need for a clear vision and plan that highlights the opportunities and strengths over the long-term. In the continued quest to cut red tape, the Chamber also lent its voice to the core services review development forum. Chamber Manager Michelle Favero spoke to the barriers and challenges in the development process and offered possible solutions that would streamline process.
Many more policy initiatives are continuing to be driven by the Chamber Government Affairs Committee. Members are encouraged to participate in the committee, surveys and roundtables. For more information contact Michelle Favero at [email protected].

President's message
Chamber driving policy initiatives
On May 25-26, I had the pleasure of enjoying the BC Chamber of Commerce AGM in Penticton. Wine tours aside, the AGM was a focused conference of policy debate, engaging speakers and valuable workshops.
I am proud to announce that for the fi rst time the Mission Chamber forwarded policy resolutions to be vetted through the rigorous policy process. Both the Provincial Fraser River Flood Management and the Federal Fraser River Navigation Management were accepted unanimously by the more than 150 voting delegates from chambers and industry across B.C.
Both policies can be viewed on our website under “Infl uence.”
On June 7, we held our annual golf tournament. The “Swamp Tourney” coined by past president Cal Crawford, was certainly a test of endurance for even me, a seasoned golfer. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves despite the rain. Congratulations to all our winners and I look forward to a drier day on the links next year.
Picnic in the Park is coming June 21. This is the District of Mission’s annual report to the business community. A long-standing event, this year will feature new CAO Ken Bjorgaard. I encourage you to come out and connect with him as well as the mayor, councillors and senior staff from city hall. Register online at www.missionchamber.bc.ca. I look forward to seeing you there!

Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never golfed in
the rain or this year’s Chamber Golf Tournament. Serious and pleasure golfers alike braved monsoon-like conditions June 7 with an eye to network and have fun.
This year’s big winner and the only team to complete all 18 holes were the gang from Downey Transmission: Sean Downey, Stu Dunaway, Ryan McCreery and Rob Dahaiwal. Rob also won closest to the pin and Stu won the chipping contest.
The most challenged team of day went to the Canadian Tire Team of Frank Ehrhardt, Katherine Yanko, Christina Rodgers, and Vicki Gould. Interestingly, Frank won the putting contest and Katherine won the women’s closest to the pin.
A special thank you to Tyler Hoff and Pioneer Chrysler for sponsoring the Hole-in-One again this year. Unfortunately their offer of a one-year lease on a 2011 Jeep Wrangler complete with a year’s insurance provided by Meier Insurance Company was not won this year, though there were some close shots.
Thank you to all our sponsors who made it a terrifi c afternoon despite the rain:

Starting in the September edition of The Business
Track, members will have the opportunity to be highlighted in our Get to Know article.
Penned by professional writer Kathleen Rake of Click Media, the article will focus on the What, Where, and How of each organization highlighted.
“It will be a great way for the community to learn more about the many businesses that operate in Mission,” notes Membership Committee Chair Ann Harper.
“Not only will it focus on their products and services, it will
underscore their values and links
to the community. I am looking
forward to hearing more about
the niches our members fill.”
Rake brings to the Mission
Regional Chamber of Commerce
and Business Track more
than 20 years of professional
experience writing and editing
for media, industry, government,
non-profit and small business.
Members who are interested
in participating in this new
