The Stetson University Family Enterprise Center in partnership with The Turnaround Management Association presents a unique group of seminars, The Business Renewal Series.

Survive Hard Times Navigate the Economy and Control Your Own Destiny is the first of the series and deals with topics that have become increasingly more important as we deal with the economy, rapidly changing business conditions, rising costs and aggressive global competition.

Many businesses are in need of a turnaround or renewal in order to survive and to build a platform for long term profitable growth. Recognizing this need and taking action are the first critical steps towards reinventing the business and controlling your own destiny.

Leaders must identify the causes of performance decline, impairment and stagnation early to avoid a crisis. If the company is in crisis mode, they must understand the options and develop an action plan.

Strategy, financial capital and human capital must be integrated and aligned into an action plan that is clearly understood, managed and measured for results.

Mario Fidanzi has been a senior executive with a number of family controlled businesses including Rand McNally and Scholastic.

He has led sales, manufacturing, distribution and operations nationally and internationally in the printing, packaging, publishing and retail industries. His teams expanded capability, formed strategic alliances, joint ventures and launched new businesses in the United States, Europe, Mexico and South America. They secured the largest contracts of their type in the world.

Fidanzi has evaluated acquisitions and consulted with industry leaders including some of the largest companies in their markets in the world.

He has an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a BSBA from Roosevelt University.

Robert D. Katz, CPA and Certified Turnaround Professional is a Managing Director at Executive Sounding Board Associates Inc. He has a BSE in Accounting and Management from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA in Finance from Temple University.

He has over 21 years of strategic and hands-on experience as a CEO, COO, CFO, restructuring officer and as a management consultant in finance, operations and marketing. He has restructured companies in and out of bankruptcy in the manufacturing, wholesale distribution, retail, hotel/casino, publishing and service

industries. He has also successfully restructured and refinanced in both the publicly traded and private sectors.

He is an expert in adding stakeholder value for his clients and increasing cash flow. In addition, Katz represents debtors, secured and unsecured creditors both in and out of bankruptcy and has significant expertise in restructuring both debt and equity.

Katz is the Vice President of University Relations, a member of The Turnaround Management’s Executive Committee and a member of its National Board of Directors. He sits on The Commercial Finance Association’s Education Foundation and has led numerous operational and financial turnarounds for Middle Market, private and public companies. He is also an adjunct professor at Temple University.

Dr. Ruediger Mueller brings more than 22 years of corporate and consulting experience to his position as President and Senior Partner of TCMI, Inc. (www.tcmius.com), a consulting group specializing in operational, growth, and turnaround management as well as human resource development.

Prior to founding Bankers Advocate Group, Christopher Curtin owned a manufacturing plant and a commercial finance company specializing in factoring, trade financing and letters of credit. The experiences he derived while owning these companies are key

components in his ability to understand the dynamics of business and problems that occur on a daily basis.

His experience in cost containment, lending, credit, collections and cash flow allow him to add meaningful value and insight to any engagement. Curtin is dedicated to helping business leaders in solving problems, creating greater value and achieving their goals. He is a 1980 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Industrial Management. Susan Smith has provided financial, forensic and bankruptcy related services to debtors, creditors, trustees, and other parties in bankruptcies, restructurings, and liquidations for twenty years. She has been employed by Mesirow Financial Consulting since

the Corporate Restructuring Group transferred from KPMG.

Smith’s extensive experience providing financial services to distressed companies includes building and critiquing cash flow projections, business plans, financial and structural analysis, forensic investigations, valuations and evaluation of accounting procedures and controls. JAMES SCHEINER Dean Stetson University School of Business Administration

James H. Scheiner is Dean of the School of Business Administration and Professor of Accounting at Stetson University (since July, 2004). Scheiner, an award winning teacher, has published articles in the leading accounting research journals including The Accounting Review and The Journal of Accounting Research.

He is also a co-author of Sawyer’s Internal Auditing, the industry standard in internal auditing and of an American Accounting Association monograph on accounting education research. He also has served as an associate editor of Advances in Accounting and as a member of the editorial review board of Issues in Accounting Education.

Prior to Stetson University, Scheiner was Dean of the Cisler College of Business, Director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research and Professor at Northern Michigan University, Director of the School of Accounting and Professor of Accounting at Florida International University and on the faculties of the University of Tennessee and Duke University.

Scheiner has provided consulting services on complex business issues to the Tennessee Valley Authority and other governmental and business entities. His degrees include a BSBA and an MBA from Washington University (St. Louis) and an MA and a Ph.D. in Accounting from The Ohio State University.
