I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course surveys the basic concepts of risk management. Topics include
principles and applications of health, property, life and casualty insurance. Upon
completion, students should be able to evaluate different insurance needs and
assist an organization in acquiring adequate insurance coverage.

III. COURSE GOALS
A. The student will be able to define the general concept of risk.
B. The student will be able to identify and evaluate risks in terms of property and
liability exposures.
C. The student will be able to identify and evaluate risks in terms of life, health
and loss of income exposures.
D. The student will be able to implement techniques of risk management from
insurance principles and policy provisions.
E. The student will be able to recommend alternative courses of action that a risk
manager may take to address commercial property loss, liability and workers
compensation insurance issues.
F. The student will be able to recommend alternative courses of action that an
individual may take to address individual issues such as homeowners and auto
owner's policies.
G. The student will be able to evaluate need and propose appropriate employee
benefits such as life /health insurance, disability income and retirement/estate
planning.
H. The student will be able to recognize changes to the risk management
environment such as government regulation, industry competition and legal/social
issues.
I. The student will be able to recognize global social and political issues that affect
the management of local and international business.
IV. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
A. PowerPoint presentations posted on Blackboard
B. Blackboard assignments
C. Discussion boards on current events and related topics
D. Critical Thinking activities
E. Research on various insurance topics
V. EVALUATION
A. Tests (35% of grade)
B. Assignments (15% of grade)
C. Quizzes (15% of grade)
D. Report/Presentation (20% of grade).
E. Attendance & Participation via the Discussion Board (15% of grade).
Completion of Assignments
Timely participation in class discussion is required and expected. Timely completion
of all assignments by the due date is expected. No late homework will be
accepted. Contact your instructor if you are having problems with meeting the
schedule, having technical difficulties or other problems with the course
assignments.
VII. ACADEMIC HONESTY
Academic Honesty:
You should read the entire Cleveland Community College Academic Bulletin and
Student Handbook. Pay special attention to the policy on Academic Honesty. You
will be held responsible for all matters pertaining to academic honesty in this
course. See your instructor if you have questions. Pay particular attention to the
first two paragraphs, given in the following excerpt from the handbook:
Cleveland Community College expects students to practice academic honesty at all
times. Academic dishonesty refers to cheating on tests, examinations, projects,
and other assigned work. Plagiarism, a very serious form of academic dishonesty, is
work that has been written by someone other than the student submitting the
work or work obtained from an undocumented or improperly documented
resource. Students are responsible for documenting both direct quotations and
paraphrased material.
VIII. GRADING SCALE
The College’s Grading Scale will be used.
Numerical Grade/Letter Grade
93-100/A
85-92/B
77-84/C
70-76/D
Below 70/F
Incompletes will not be given.
IX. MAKE UP POLICY
Makeup tests will not be given. The lowest test grade will be dropped.
