Bake Sale!
2 - Winter 2013
almost fell going into my office this morning. It
would have been a heck of a way to start the day. I would have tripped on ALL the many gifts that this c o mmu n i t y h a s s o generously donated for the
Be A Santa To A Senior program. It would have likely been a soft landing since a number of these items are soft and cozy, robes and slippers and blankets. The rolls of toilet paper would have also lightened the landing, while the laundry soap may have stung just a bit. All and all, aside from the humiliating part, it could have been a pleasure…thanks to all of you! And as winter creeps in and we are a little chilled, we will celebrate the New Year with things like taxes and a few trips. Check out the coffee talks, this is a great way to access some really good information for free. Come March we will do our annual Spring Bake Sale with goodies galore. April will bring the opportunity to thank the volunteers who make this place viable every single day. The Wellness Expo will be at Burnsville City Hall again this year on April 25th. Everything and anything you think you might need will likely be there.
Then, tax season will end, the snow will melt,
the days will get longer and I will be letting you
know the schedule for the Wednesday in the
Park concert series - hoping the days are not
too hot. We will celebrate I Love Burnsville
with ice cream in June and all will be good.
After all, what can possibly be SO BAD that
cannot be fixed with a little ice cream. Don’t
forget to join us June 6.

DISTRICT 191 EARNS TOP RATING FROM FINANCIAL AUDITING FIRM The comprehensive annual financial report for the 2011-2012 school year in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 has received a "clean, unqualified" stamp of approval from the firm that did the audit.
"That's the best rating a school district can receive from an auditor," said Dennis Hoogev-een of CliftonLarsonAllen in a report to the Board of Education in November.
Actual revenue came in slightly over budget while expenses were under budget, thus the General Fund unassigned fund balance increased from $11.5 million on July 1, 2011 to $15.4 million on June 30, 2012.
Hoogeveen said the fund balance is an important aspect in considering the District’s fi-nancial well-being since it represents things such as cash flow and serves as a cushion against unanticipated expenditures, enrollment declines, funding deficiencies, changes in state aid and more. All school districts must go through an extensive annual financial review process done by an independent auditing firm each year. The entire report is avail-able on the district's website at www.isd191.org.
DISTRICT 191 EARNS NATIONAL AP RECOGNITION Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 is one of only 11 school districts in Minne-sota and one of 539 in the nation to be placed on the College Board's 3rd Annual AP® Honor Roll. District 191 is one of only four Minnesota school districts to achieve the honor for multiple years.
The prestigious recognition is for simultaneously increasing students' access to Advanced Placement (AP) coursework while maintaining or increasing the percentage of students in grades 9 through 12 who earn scores of 3 or higher on AP exams.
BHS IS NUMBER 1 IN COLLEGE IN THE SCHOOLS PROGRAM Students at Burnsville High School get a jump start into college by taking college-level courses right at their school through the College in the Schools (CIS) program of the Uni-versity of Minnesota. Burnsville High School led the state again last year in the number of students participating in CIS courses and also in the number of credits earned — top-ping 135 high schools including Eden Prairie, Shakopee and Eagan.
Last year, BHS students earned 2,669 credits which translate into $1,195,926 in tuition savings for students and their families, according to according to a report from the Uni-versity of Minnesota. Credits apply to the University of Minnesota but also transfer to other colleges and universities across the country. High school students taking CIS courses are held to the same academic standards as students on the University campus.
BOARD BEGINS SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH Members of the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 Board of Education are seeking a firm to assist them in finding a new superintendent. They have put together a Request for Proposal (RFP) and distributed it to search firms recommended by the Min-nesota School Board Association and the American Association of School Administra-tors.
Board members agreed that search firms provide expertise and guidance and also have a national network of potential candidates — all crucial advantages as they seek a new leader who will best fit the needs of the district at this time.
Current superintendent Randy Clegg announced in October that he will retire on June 30. Ongoing information about the search process and general timeline are posted on the dis-trict website at www.isd191.org, under the "Superintendent Search" icon.

RECEPTION REFRESHER
A Reception Desk Refresher was held in November to
assist with volunteer receptionists with the many

see) they are much smarter because of this very ‘fine’
educational opportunity ☺
DISPLAY CASE DISCOVERIES
The display case in the Center is available a couple of
different times throughout the year to show off some
particular ‘collection’ you might want to share. If you
have something you would like to ‘put on display’
please see Michele to make the necessary arrangements.

The little yellow (cardboard) school bus that collects all
the goodies we share with the schools, is in need of re-
pair. An appointment will be made next month.

Fare For All Express is a unique program that has the capacity to serve many of our community members. Fare For All Express is a newer version of the traditional pro-gram. Fare For All Express
provides fresh, quality food items at up to 40% off retail prices. What type of food is for sale? The Produce Pack ($10) typically includes five varieties of fresh vegetables and two fresh fruits. The Meat Only Pack ($11)has a minimum of four assorted meat items. The Regular Pack ($20) com-bines the Produce and the Meat Packs. And the Monthly Special ($25-$30) may include Mega Meat Packs, Grilled Packs and Holiday Packs. This opportunity really helps to stretch your food budget. There are no income restrictions and no forms to complete. Fare For All participants may pay with cash, debit or credit cards, or food support (EBT) cards. Just stop in, select your ‘package’, pay and we even help you get it to your car. SNAP OUTREACH Are you having to make a choice between buying food and other necessities such as medicine, gas or rent? If so, you are not alone. Every day, thousands of Minnesota seniors go without food because their budgets are stretched so thin. It doesn’t have to be the case. Second Harvest Heartland offers free programs to help ease your food budget. An outreach specialist can help determine if you are eligible for the federal SNAP/Food Support program that puts money on a card (much like a bank debit card) for grocery purchases. Call 651-307-9033 for additional in-formation. And the Nutrition Assistance Program for Sen-iors (NAPS) provides a free 35 pound box of food each month to qualifying seniors. It may include non-perishable items like canned fruits, vegetables and juices, American cheese, peanut butter, beans and rice among other items. Call 651-484-8241 for more information. In these tough times, no one should go without food. Please contact them today.

PROBATE: TO BE OR NOT TO BE #M708 Instructor: Andrew Lehner
Do you know what probate is? Do you know how to avoid it? If you are unsure of the an-swers to these questions, this class is for you. You’ll learn about the different options available to you as you make plans for the pos-sessions you would like to leave to loved ones. By avoid-ing probate you can reduce costly fees and ensure that your beneficiaries get some of their in-heritance faster. There have been two significant changes in probate laws recently that you will need to know about to protect your loved ones from the hassles of probate.

FLAME PAINTED COPPER #A404-F3 Learn how to flame paint pieces of sheet copper with a small butane torch. This technique creates beautiful colors onto the copper and after turning the edges you can decorate with additional copper or wire. After they are lacquered and hung properly,
you will leave the class with a pendant AND a pair of earrings. Extras are available with fees pay-able to the instructor. (Additional pendants are
$12, and earrings $8). One session/$29.

METAL CLAY #A404-M3 As new metals are produced, new projects are added. This class is fun and original. Metal clay is easy to work with and very strong. Adding the embellishments is the fun part - they could be silver clay or copper. You will fire your own pieces and, upon completion, take them home that evening. Supply costs are payable to the in-structor in the class. Prices range from $10 for earrings and smaller pieces to $20 for lager pendants. One ses-sion/$19.
#A404-M3• Feb 21 • 6:30-8:30 pm • DEC Kitchen
SILVER CLAY #A404-S3 Learn to use a product from Japan made of silver recov-ered from sheet x-rays or movie film. This product mixes recycled silver and porcelain clay. You will learn to roll out the clay, cut it with tiny cookie cutters and design with it. You can design it with anything from a button of your grandmother’s to your favorite garden weed. After drying it, you will smooth out the edges and then fire it in a small kiln. Finish your piece(s) by brushing and burnishing to a beautiful 99% pure silver shine! Hang as a pendant or add earwires and they are ready-to-wear. Supply costs for this class are payable to the instructor during the class. Fees are based on the weight of your final product. Fees generally range from $12 to $35. One session/$19.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A WAY TO STRETCH YOUR GROCERY DOLLARS? Fare For All Express is a unique program that has the capacity to serve many of our community members. Fare For All Ex-press is a newer version of the traditional program. Instead of the pre-order and prepay method, a Fare For All truck will be here monthly and set up a 2-hour store where participants can pay for and then take their food packages home that day. Fare For All Express provides fresh, quality food items at up to 40% off retail prices. What type of food is for sale? The Produce
Pack ($10) typically includes five varieties of fresh vegetables and two fresh fruits. The Meat Only Pack ($11) has a mini-mum of four assorted meat items. The Regular Pack ($20)
combines the Produce and the Meat Packs. And the Monthly
Special ($25 - $30) may include Mega Meat Packs, Grilled Packs and Holiday Packs. This opportunity really helps to stretch your food budget. There are no income restrictions and no forms to complete. Fare For All participants may pay with cash, debit or credit cards, or food support (EBT) cards. Just stop in, select your ‘package’, pay and we even help you get it to your car.
Mark your calendar for these upcoming dates: Wednesdays, from 3 – 5 pm at the Diamondhead Education Center located at 200 W. Burnsville Parkway, Burnsville (952-707-4120).

What’s Your Vision for Local Media and Cable?
What's your vision for local media and cable — now and for the next 10-15 years? In February, the City of Burnsville is providing an opportunity for residents, business owners and community group representatives to help determine the future of community communi-cations. As part of its Comcast cable franchise renewal process, the City will hold a series of focus groups from Feb. 26-28 to get pub-lic input on cable service, community media, television and technology. Public participation is extremely important. Participants will learn how the cable system works, hear more about public, educational and government (PEG) access television in Burnsville, see examples of how community organizations are using modern media technology across the country, and provide ideas on the future of the cable system.
To RSVP for any of the focus groups listed below or take part in the online survey or to learn more about the City’s cable franchise renewal process, you can call 952-895-4400 or visit www.burnsville.org/cablefranchise.

COMPUTER CORNER COURTESY OF JOHN CARPENTER
TAXES With the New Year upon us it is time to sort though all those items that you saved for doing the Income Taxes and to throw out most of the records that are more than seven years old. To assist with filing, the Internal Reve-nue Service provides downloadable forms, instructions and tax tables at www.IRS.gov. The State of Minnesota has a similar site at www.revenue.state.mn.us. To find a reasonable value for items you donate to charity there is a list at donateguide.com.
EMAIL HINTS If you need to send an email to a number of people one way to avoid having a long list of email addresses at the beginning of the message is to send the message to yourself and put the other addresses on the BCC(Blind Carbon Copy) line.
If someone sends you an email that you would like to pass along, it is a good idea to delete all the extra email addresses before forwarding the email. You never know who is trolling for email addresses to add to their spam list.
HEALTH ITEMS Health insurance pays for procedures and tests but in many cases you don't know what the cost is ahead of time. The web site www.healthcarebluebook.com gives typical costs in your geographic area.
There is plenty of free authenticated healthcare infor-mation on www.sharecare.com. It is a multiple use site with general and expert advice as well as references to other useful health sites. Explore topics, video, as well as health reference. You can ask a question and get ex-pert advice.
RECREATION There is a site: www.oldradioworld com. that has re-cordings of long disappeared radios shows from the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's all arranged by categories. The can be played though your computer's sound sys-tem for free. No pictures-just sound-this is radio. There are literally hundreds of recordings available.
