Events Planning A joint meeting is planned for those involved in putting on events in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge in 2015. It is going to be held at the Town Council offices on Jaycroft Road on Monday 5th January at 7pm. The meeting is been organised and hosted by the Burnham Town Centre and Burnham Tourism Managers. Town Centre Manager, Beverley Milner Simonds said, "With the new events area in the town centre and some different ways for groups and organisations to get their messages out, we thought it was important to bring people together to share information. The Town Council wants to increase the quality and quantity of the events that are held in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge." Tourism Manager, Ian Jefferies continued, "I got all the event managers and groups considering holding events in together last year and it worked really well when people provided their planned dates. We avoided clashes and also events shared resources like stewards, gazebos etc. The online diary allows visitors and locals to plan their days out and we want to get as many events in there for 2015 as possible. With Beverley now in position and the works being carried out within our town centre, many more opportunities will arise to build on the events list." Fritzlar TwinningThe Fritzlar Twinning January meeting will take place on Wednesday 21st in St. John’s Church Hall, Highbridge, between 2pm and 4pm. There will be a speaker on Credit Unions at the meeting and as usual all are welcome to attend. During the meeting there will be light refreshments available. Burnham & Highbridge Philatelic SocietyWe meet every third Tuesday in the Month (except August) at the Burnham Community Centre. We are the second oldest Society in the region, founded in 1967. The oldest one which is based in Wells was founded in 1965. We meet at 7.20pm for 7.30pm. There is adequate free car parking. Members pay £4 per year or £3 if paid up by January. The BD Jazz Club The BD Jazz Club is the local Burnham area Traditional/New Orleans Jazz Club. The Club usually meets on the last Friday of every month for regular club sessions at Laburnum House Lodge Hotel in Sloway Lane, West Huntspill, which is situated a short distance down the A38 from Highbridge. Sedgemoor RamblersJanuary is well-known for making a New Year’s resolution! This usually means giving up something we enjoy; alternatively you could take up a healthy and enjoyable activity and try walking with Sedgemoor Ramblers. One of the highlights in January will be a leisurely walk ‘Exploring Steart Marsh’ on Sunday 18th January; an opportunity to spot egrets, curlew, heron and deer. Our winter programme is now available from Tourist Information Offices and on our website www.sedgemoorramblers.co.uk. Our main walking day is Sunday but we have popular monthly shorter walks on Saturdays throughout the winter months. Throughout the spring and summer we also have weekly short evening walks, usually with an optional pub meal afterwards. Sedgemoor Ramblers is a local group within Ramblers. How to correct your golf postureDo you suffer with poor posture? Posture issues are very common among golfers; a poor posture can affect distance, direction, strike and cause stress on the body. Over 60% of golfers are guilty of an extreme C or S curve in the spine; this is usually caused by tight or weak muscles, or a lack of understanding.

Steps to an effective postureStand upright and place a club down your back, so one end touches the back of your head and the other end touches your backside. Now tilt about 30 degrees at the hips, keeping the connection of the club down your back, then allow your knees to flex.

Keeping your back nice and straight and maintaining the tilt in your hips, allow your arms to hang from your shoulders, this is then the position you should take your hold on the club. You have now adopted an effective golf posture.

Primary Spaces East Brent C of E First School given funding boost to improve outdoor sports facilitiesEast Brent C of E First School is set for a major boost after it was successful in gaining just under £30,000 to develop new outdoor sports facilities at its site. The funding is part of Sport England’s £18m National Lottery funded Primary School Facilities Fund which is helping more schools to provide outdoor multi-activity play areas across the country.

The investment is designed to support those schools which are in greatest need of facility improvements and will benefit both pupils at the school and the local community. At East Brent C of E First School the new investment will go towards completely updating and re-vamping our current playground. Ms Hare, Headteacher said, “We are absolutely thrilled that the children will have this superb new space to play in. The softer ball rebound playground surface with activity markings, enclosures and hoops and goals will revolutionise play times for our children.” Nick Bitel, Sport England Chair, said, “Having the right space to play sport and be physically active as a child is vitally important. We are delighted to be investing this funding in East Brent C of E First School to improve the spaces that will give children the space to start enjoying PE and sport.” Sebastian Coe, CH KBE, the Prime Minister’s Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Ambassador, added, “A positive first experience of PE and sport at primary school is crucial to encouraging young people to be active throughout their lives, but for those schools with little or no outside space this can be extremely challenging to deliver. This funding will provide better outdoor multi-activity play areas at East Brent C of E First School that can be used both within the curriculum and outside school hours by local communities. I am convinced this will boost the opportunities for young people to be physically active.” This fund builds on and complements the Government’s £150 million a year Primary PE and Sport Premium.

The fund will provide outdoor multi-activity areas which can be used both within the curriculum and out of school hours. As well as providing sports facilities, staff and volunteers will receive information on how best to use the new facility. The fund aims to help schools make good use of relatively small spaces and provide facilities which are low cost but provide a degree of enclosure, colour and innovation that will:• Inspire physical activity and participation by children• Enable and encourage healthy activity • Develop the foundations of a sporting habit for life through a great start in PE and sport.Please contact the school for any further information on 01278 760490.

Make sure all your planning for this year has been done, including purchasing new seeds and composts for the sowing and planting ahead.Only work on the garden outdoors when the soil is not too wet or frozen.New trees and shrubs can be planted if conditions are right. If soil conditions are not suitable, any new plants can be heeled into a shallow trench and covered with soil. Ideally this should be in a sheltered part of the garden. The plants can stay this way for several weeks if necessary until conditions improve.Any forced spring bulbs in pots can be brought into the home, but try and keep them cool for a couple of weeks.Seed potatoes will be available this month. Stand them upright in trays or egg boxes with the rose

end of the potato uppermost and the tiny stalk downwards. Place them in a light, frost free place.Only sow seeds indoors if you can provide steady heat for the resulting seedlings to grow on. If you have no heat, wait until later before sowing inside.Light levels outside will hopefully improve towards the end of the month. That should cheer us up!If you fancy having a go at forcing some early rhubarb, mulch it with some manure and cover the plant with a large lightproof container. The resulting pink sticks of rhubarb could be ready in about six weeks.Consider warming up some soil outside for early sowing or planting later on. Cover the soil with some plastic sheeting, garden fleece or cloches.

Don’t be a noisy neighbour - noise equipment seizedOver twenty items of separate equipment such as an electric guitar and amplifier, numerous speakers, a sub-woofer system and TVs have been seized from a flat in Bridgwater, by Sedgemoor District Council’s Environmental Health Team. Over the last five months there have been regular complaints about extremely loud levels of music coming from the flat. Environmental Health Officers described the levels of noise as being some of the loudest and most distressing to neighbours that they have ever heard. The occupant was warned on several occasions by Homes In Sedgemoor, who own the property, to keep noise to a reasonable level. All warnings were completely ignored causing great disturbance to others living in the building. An Abatement Notice was served on the person responsible and again this was ignored on a regular basis. After obtaining a warrant, the property was entered with the assistance of Avon and Somerset Police and all equipment capable of producing noise was seized. There will now be a prosecution for breach of a Noise Abatement Notice and the Council will seek a confiscation order to dispose of the seized equipment. This operation demonstrates Sedgemoor District Council’s willingness, where appropriate, to use its full range of enforcement powers to tackle this sort anti-social and nuisance behaviour which can seriously affect the quality of people’s lives.

Double Helpings of Food & Drink Festivals in 2015The Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival will return in 2015 with two expanded and improved festivals. The Spring Festival will be on Saturday 23rd May (the late May Bank Holiday), and a Harvest Festival will have a spooky theme on Saturday 31st October. Both festivals will be free entry and held all day (9am to 4pm). There will be more stalls, more children's activities, the large outdoor market and more competitions - including the return of The Great Burnham Bake Off. Beware of Telephone & Computer Scams

I have written about this many times before but unfortunately our local area is being badly affected by various scams which seem very plausible. These can take various forms. Please tell your elderly friends and relatives as this age bracket seem more susceptible than others to the clever pitch that is given.

One very clever scam is to appear in search results. For example, one gentleman had a computer problem so decided to call Microsoft about this. He put the word Microsoft into his search engine and it returned many results, one of which he believed was Microsoft. He called the UK phone number and spoke to a very helpful gentleman who offered to “clean” his computer. In actual fact, he was not calling Microsoft but a bogus IT company in India. After paying this computer to be "cleaned" costing around £300 for a 5 year service plan, he realised that the computer was no better than prior to making the call, so he rang me. After visiting him and fixing the actual problem, I helped him make a claim with his credit card company to get the money back. He was convinced that he was calling Microsoft, but he wasn’t!

Another scam is the IT cold call. The phone rings and the caller explains that they are from “Windows” or “The Internet Security Team” or similar. They try to explain that your computer has a virus or problems and that they can fix for free. In actual fact they just want to get control of your computer and then they will try to charge you for the work. I have experienced people’s data being copied by these people and even the computer “locked” if the customer does not pay (after realising it is a scam).

Chairman’s Charity AnnouncedChairman of Sedgemoor District Council, Councillor Peter Downing, has announced the name of the charity which will benefit from any civic fund-raising or donations – and he has chosen local charity BARB – Burnham Area Rescue Boat. Cllr Downing said, “I have long been aware of the reassuring presence and help that BARB gives the residents and visitors to Burnham-on-Sea and nearby coastal resorts, particularly during the summer season. The value of BARB is also felt more widely across Sedgemoor District, a good example being the tremendous response by BARB to last winter’s flooding which was invaluable to residents across the Somerset Levels and Moors. We at SDC are very grateful to them and all their volunteers and I should like to recognise their efforts and commitment with some practical encouragement.”

The W.I. in 2015Welcome to the 100th anniversary of the WI! An exciting year ahead! I thought you would like to know some of the history of this organisation. So here is a brief look at the first few years. It all started in 1915. During the First World War, it was formed to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the food supply. The

first WI in Britain was formed under the banner of the Agricultural Organisation Society and was at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch on Anglesey, North Wales on September 16th 1915, and the first WI in England was Singleton WI in Sussex - much easier to say! By the end of 1916, forty WIs had opened and by 1917, 137 WIs had been opened.

Due to the WI movement growing so fast, the Government handed the responsibility for opening WIs over to the Women's Section of the Board of Agriculture, Food Department. The annual subscription was two shillings - about £24 in today’s money. By the end of 1918 there were 199 WIs. The organisers were unable to keep up with the demand to form new WIs and so the first training school for WI County Organisers was held. The first AGM resolution was passed urging local authorities to take advantage of the government scheme for state-aided housing. A WI was formed at Sandringham with Queen Mary as President. The present Queen is the Honorary President, and the Queen Mother served as President of the Sandringham branch for a remarkable 65 years.

In 2015 there will be two WIs in Burnham to choose from - one in the afternoon, and a new evening group. The afternoon group meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 2pm in the Community Centre. Berrow Conservation Group Adventures on the Road - Tricky moments of wildlife rescue with ‘Secret World’ Secret World Wildlife Rescue is the only wildlife charity in the South West that operates a 24/7 rescue, rehabilitation and release service. Roger Lucken will give an illustrated talk about the work of the charity, focusing particularly on moments as an on-call driver, carrying out tricky and adventurous rescues involving everything from snakes to starlings, and owls to otters. Come along to find out how to get a swan off the motorway or an owl out of a chimney. There is a small charge of £2.50 for non-members, £1 for members. Light refreshments included. The talk will take place at Berrow Village Hall, start time 7.30pm on Tuesday 27th January.

Road Smart: Scheme to reduce road casualtiesIn just one year in Avon and Somerset, 452 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads. Around one third of these were young people aged 17 to 24. To help reduce this figure we have launched a free education course for drivers, and learner drivers, in the force area. Road Smart is available for

all drivers, but we are especially keen to encourage young drivers to attend the session. The course has been specially created on behalf of Avon and Somerset Police. It aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists’ existing driving knowledge and experience.

• 95% of all collisions are caused by human error.• 1 in 5 new drivers will have a crash within their first six months of driving.• Road crashes are the biggest single killer of young people in the UK.

Some insurance companies will offer a discount to young drivers who have completed the workshop. The course is a one-off interactive session and will be held at venues across the force area. It is based on the successful training package that is used for driver awareness courses nationally. Supt Ian Smith said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from a free course that could be a life-saving opportunity. The training will be delivered by the TTC group, a professional road safety education provider. The national course this is based upon is widely hailed as excellent and thought-provoking and really does influence driver behaviour.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said, “I am delighted Avon and Somerset Police have designed a unique road safety package to further educate all road users, but particularly young drivers." Courses can be booked in advance. There are two versions, one for young drivers (aged 17 to 24) and one for other drivers. Third Rotary Charity SwimarathonThe fourth annual Swimarathon organised by the Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea will take place at Brean Splash on Sunday 8th February, starting at 10am. The Rotary Swimarathons have proved highly popular with local voluntary organisations and businesses raising substantial sums of money for their chosen charities. This year’s event will follow the lines of last year; medals and certificates will be presented to all participants. An entry fee of £25 will be payable to the Rotary Club for each team entered; all teams will retain the money they raise by sponsorship, and if they represent charitable organisations their charities will be able to claim Gift Aid where applicable. Standard sponsorship forms will be available from the Rotary Club for the use of participating teams.

Teams may consist of between two and eight swimmers and more than one team may be entered by any group or business. Teams will swim for a maximum of 50 minutes – this is not a competition; swimmers can be sponsored by the length or at a flat rate.

Several organisations have already entered teams and more will be welcome. I have to confess that January isn’t my favourite month. The days are short and often overcast, and the nights long and cold. Nevertheless, here we are in January, the first month of the year, named after the Mythical Roman God Janus, who was depicted as a man facing two directions, backwards and forwards, at once. The Romans believed that Janus was the God of gates and doorways, and so there is a logic in naming the first month of the new year after him, because each December 31st at midnight we stand in the gateway of a new beginning. We often take the opportunity, both as a society and as individuals, to review, at the same time, the events and circumstances of the past year. It’s a moment that can produce a wide ranging assortment of emotions, depending on the events both personal and global, of the previous year. The transition between 11.59 and 12.00 midnight is of course, just a tick of the clock, a moment in time. Yet at New Year this moment of time is a liminal moment that separates the old from the new, bringing along with it a myriad of challenges and opportunities. We can approach this time with wonderment for the future or stand fearfully at the threshold of the as yet unknown. In the present global political climate, with the threat of terrorism, disease and economic collapse ever placed before us in much of what we read and see on TV, it can feel like a frightening spectre; a challenge just to get by.

Yet a New Year can also present new opportunities, which of course accounts for the copious resolutions made by so many. The Christian belief and hope is in a God who is always making things and opportunities anew. The God whose love is steadfast and overflowing, in mercy and grace, who hands us each new moment as an opportunity to begin again. We may not always keep our New Year resolutions to the letter beyond January 2nd…3rd…30th…etc, but we can nevertheless recognise that each morning is a God-given, fresh opportunity to begin again. Right here, right now, each one of us. So may I wish you God’s richest blessings for 2015.

Healthy projects wanted!£7,000 is up for grabs from Sedgemoor District Council, for groups to spend on health focussed projects. Community groups, registered charities, after-school clubs, leisure centres, housing providers, activity clubs, children’s centres, offices and businesses are all being encouraged to come up with their own project ideas, based on local health and wellbeing needs, and then bid for up to £2,000 to carry the project through. The projects must be based around one or more of the following themes: physical activity and exercise, healthy eating, cooking and growing or weight management. Funding could be used to pump prime new activity classes, help set up programmes supporting weight loss, teaching healthier ways of cooking or how to grow your own produce, as well as education on the benefits of leading healthier lifestyles. Previous successful projects have included the setup of ASA Swimfit sessions in three swimming pools within Sedgemoor, a rural weight management programme, after school cooking clubs, a healthy weight and fitness project in three Sedgemoor primary schools, community food growing and cooking workshops with young people, as well as a series of history themed town walks. Applications can be made from Tuesday, 2nd December and the closing date is Monday 2nd February 2015. Could you help the Citizens of Sedgemoor?Every year Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau helps about 5,000 people who are experiencing problems in their lives. These problems may be about debt, employment, relationships, benefits, housing, consumer matters, utilities or a combination of these, or other, issues. The need for the Bureau’s services continues to grow year on year and the present economic austerity has produced a sharp increase in demand. Often, but not always, our clients are people who find dealing with officialdom and documentation a challenge and need help to resolve issues and negotiate with large organisations. The Bureau’s headquarters are in Bridgwater and there are outreaches in Highbridge, Burnham, Cheddar, Cannington, Nether Stowey and North Petherton.

Most advice is given by a team of volunteer advisers. Without the generous and public-spirited commitment of those volunteers, many of our fellow citizens would find life a greater struggle. Because the demand for the Bureau’s services has increased, we want to recruit more volunteer advisers. Would you consider joining our team? You don’t need any special skills or knowledge, just a keen interest in other people and desire to help those with problems. There is a comprehensive training programme and plenty of support. Volunteers generally commit one day a week, although our rota has some flexibility.
