From the Desk of Rabbi SagalFrom.the.end.of.World.War.I,.the.British.governed.the.Land.of.Israel,.known.as.Palestine,.under.a.charter.called.the.British.Mandate..
In.1947,.the.United.Nations.voted.to.partition.Palestine.into.two.countries.-.an.Arab.state.and.a.Jewish.state..The.Jewish.state.would.be.smaller.and.contain.not.a.single.Jewish.holy.site,.including.the.Western.Wall..The.Jewish.govern-ment.in.Palestine.accepted.the.decision.of.the.UN..The.Arab.nations.did.not.
David.Ben.Gurion.wanted.to.declare.a.state.on.May.14.1948,.the.day.before.the.British.were.to.leave.and.the.partition.plan.was.to.be.put.into.effect..But.many.in.his.government.opposed.him..Some.felt.it.was.too.dangerous.that.a.tiny.Jewish.state.would.not.survive.the.inevitable.incursion.of.massive.Arab.armies..The.orthodox.Jews.opposed.him.because.they.wanted.the.state.to.follow.traditional.Jewish.law..Ben.Gurion.however,.was.convinced.that.the.time.was.right..He.compromised.with.the.orthodox.and.persuaded.enough.of.the.others.so.that.on.May.14,.as.the.Sabbath.was.approaching,.Ben.Gurion.declared.the.new.State.of.Israel.to.be.born..As.predicted,.the.Arab.armies.attacked.and.the.War.of.Independence.began..
Imagine.the.pressure.and.stress.on.Ben.Gurion!.The.fate.of.the.Jewish.state.rested.with.his.decision,.and.it.was.by.no.means.certain.that.the.Jews.would.survive.the.coming.war..Yet,.Ben.Gurion.had.faith.in.his.instinct.and.in.his.peo-ple,.and.now.70.years.later,.we.celebrate.the.State.of.Israel.
The.Holocaust.had.ended.only.three.years.before,.and.Ben.Gurion.knew.that.for.the.Jewish.people.to.survive.they.needed.a.country.of.their.own,.despite.the.odds..His.courage.and.bravery.in.the.face.of.unrelenting.stress.and.pressure.and.challenge.created.the.miracle.that.is.Israel.
Today.we.marvel.at.his.courage..As.we.confront.our.own.challenges.and.trials,.take.inspiration.from.Ben.Gurion.and.his.willingness.to.persevere.even.in.the.face.of.difficulties.

It.has.been.a.rewarding.experience.getting.to.know.you.and.connecting.with.you..I.would.like.to.share.some.parting.thoughts.with.you.
Did.you.know…
•.Temple.Emanu-El.has.over.1,050.family.units,.which.is.equivalent.to.almost.3,000.members..A.family.unit.can.vary.from.a.family.with.children,.to.a.couple,.to.a.single.member,.so.these.numbers.are.based.on.an.average.of.three.members.per.unit.•.Our.congregation.ranges.in.age.from.toddlers.to.adults.in.their.80’s.and.90’s.•.Founded.in.1950,.Temple.Emanu-El.has.family.units.who.have.been.with.us.for.nu-merous.years,.such.as:.55.for.over.50.years,..270.for.over.25.years,.and.150.for.over.18.years..That.is.over.1,440.members..(almost.half.of.our.congregation).who.have.been.calling.Temple.Emanu-El.“home”.for.over.18.years,.celebrating.an.abundance.of.B’nai.Mitzvah,.weddings,.and.baby.namings!•.For.close.to.70.years,.Temple.Emanu-El.has.grown.to.the.large.community.we.have.today.with.diverse.programs.and.services.for.all.ages.
Speaking.of.programs.and.services,.just.a.few.where.we.have.connected.with.each.other.are:
1..Our.Early.Childhood.Education.(ECE).program.is.scheduled.to.expand.this.Fall.to.include.full-day.childcare.for.infants;2..This.past.year,.our.Religious.School.was.nationally.recognized.for.innovative.programming.and.curricula.and.presented.an.award.by.the.National.Association.of.Reform.Jewish.Educators;3.TEWTY,.the.Temple.Emanu-El.Youth.Group,.hosted.a.day.long.event.for.all.Jewish.teens.in.the.region;.and4..Just.recently,.a.program.featuring.one.of.the.youngest.Holocaust.survivors.spoke.at.Temple.Emanu-El.to.a.standing-room-only.crowd.of.over.500.people.comprised.of.congregants,.students.and.neighbors.in.the.larger.Westfield.community.
Let’s.continue.to.connect.in.years.to.come.as.we.celebrate.Jewish.life.at.Temple.Emanu-El..We.have.a.dynamic.group.of.people.–.members,.clergy,.staff.and.lay.leaders.–.who.together.have.created.a.wonderful.congregation..

Don.served.our.synagogue.with.profound.dedication.for.26.years..He.built.a.firm.foundation.for.our.music.program.which.flourished.during.his.tenure.and.it.has.continued.to.flourish.to.this.day..He.taught.our.children.who.loved.him..He.guided.them.through.bar.or.bat.mitzvah..He.officiated.at.weddings.and.funerals..He.nurtured.our.choir..He.reached.out.to.the.larger.community.and.endeared.himself.to.all.
He.encouraged.and.starred.in.extraordinary.musicals.that.our.synagogue.presented,.espe-cially.King.David/David.King,.Victory.at.Masada,.and.Milk.and.Honey.(directed.by.his.dear.Marcy.Decker)..Don.immersed.himself.in.the.frivolity.of.Purim.with.outrageous.costume.and.bizarre.lyrics..He.introduced.us.to.the.music.of.Debbie.Friedman.even.as.he.chanted.the.liturgy.of.the.Holydays.with.solemnity..
He.encouraged.us.to.commission.choral.works.by.leading.composers.with.their.world.premieres.at.Temple.Emanu-El...He.helped.Temple.Emanu-El.to.invite.extraordinary.soloists.to.our.Yom.Kippur.service,.including.principal.cellists.Jascha.Silberstein.of.the.Metropolitan.Opera.Company.and.Lorne.Munroe.of.the.New.York.Philharmonic.
Rabbi.Kroloff.recalls.playing.doubles.tennis.with.our.Cantor..It.was,.he.notes,.one.of.the.most.humbling.and.intimidating.experiences.of.his.life..Don.was.a.master.on.the.court,.deceptive.and.powerful,.always.with.a.smile,.playing.into.his.nineties.
Don.adored.his.children.and.grandchildren..His.wife,.Marcy,.was.the.love.of.his.life...Don’s.devotion.to.Marcy,.and.hers.to.Don,.became.the.stuff.of.legacy.in.
our.community..They.supported.and.complemented.each.other.magnificently.

Early Childhood Jewish Educators Inspired by ECE-RJ Inaugural Israel ConferenceIn.February,.I.had.the.privilege.of.attending.the.annual.Early.Childhood.Educators.of.Reform.Judaism.(ECE-RJ).conference.in.Israel..I.traveled.and.studied.together.with.39.other.early.childhood.professionals.throughout.the.US..We.explored.the.
cultural,.historical,.and.spiritual.layers.of.this.unique.and.beautiful.country.through.an.early.childhood.lens..We.gained.a.unique.connec-tion.to.Israel.and.the.knowledge.to.impact.how.Israel.is.taught.within.our.local.institutions.and.communities.
As.a.founding.(and.active).member.of.ECE-RJ,.this.was.a.dream.come.true.as.it.was.a.celebration.of.our.organization’s.18th.year..When.we.first.created.our.by-laws,.we.had.
dreams.that.one.day.we.could.hold.a.conference.in.Israel..It.is.comforting.to.know.that.synagogues.across.America.value.the.importance.of.early.childhood..We.have.made.good.progress,.but.there.is.always.more.work.to.be.done!
