DESCRIPTION

USA worlds-bound after winning U21 men's gold GATINEAU, Canada, July 10, 2016 – Team USA's finesse won the day against Cuba's power, and the Americans are world championship-bound by virtue of a 3-1 (25-17, 29-27, 19-25, 25-22) gold-medal game victory at the U21 NORCECA Men's Continental Championship on Sunday. The hotly anticipated final at Centre Sportif de Gatineau swung on the second set. Team USA surmounted a six-point deficit (17-11), setting up a frantic finish where USA prevailed on the sixth set point after leading scorer Kyle Ensing put down a free ball. In the closeout set, tournament most valuable player and top setter Josh Tuaniga and USA played from ahead, preventing Cuba from getting closer than two points after the first technical timeout. A Miguel David Gutierrez serving error sealed the result. “This is super-awesome, being able to fight with this team, go through it all and see that each guy wants it just as much if not more,” said Tuaniga, who crossed up Cuba

2016 Men U21 NORCECA Continental Championship

Page 18: Bulletin No 7 Men U21 Continental Championship- Gatineau. Canada

“This is super-awesome, being able to fight with this team, go through it all and see that each guy wants it just as much if not more,” said Tuaniga, who crossed up Cuba with a no-look down ball to score the penultimate USA point. “Just to see the fire in our team. That's what makes all worth it. We've seen how much we love this game. “Anything we do with 'USA' on the jersey, I love it. I just thank God for the opportunity. First time I've ever played Cuba. Such a great team. Such big arms.” Ensing was top shot with an efficient 20 points (including 15 kills from 25 attacks), while Jordan Ewert added 19 (18 kills from 34 attacks). Jose Carlos Romero paced Cuba with 19 points (16 kills from 32 attacks), while the outside-hitter combo of Gutierrez and Miguel Lopez each had 14. Ewert and Gutierrez were each named the tournament's top spikers. Team USA converted 55-of-106 attacks (51.9 per cent) while Cuba made good on 54-of-115 (47.0%). The Americans' reception seldom wavered, as Cuba was limited to three aces. . “One of the things that we took pride in when we started training was we were not going to let anyone outwork us,” USA coach Jay Hosack said. “That second game was the deciding factor. We talked about sending a message by sending a ball back in play – does not matter if it's a free ball or a down ball – just to say to them 'you got to do better than that.' After that they started making more errors. I could not be more proud of the way they played tonight. “Kyle Ensing had 18 kills and zero errors and hit over 70 per cent for the match. That's huge. We'll take that any night of the week. “Cuba's a very good team, very strong,” Hosack added. “I would not be surprised if they were at worlds next year with an at-large berth. When you see teams like that for the whole week, they can bring some heat. I thought we took some of their swings away with our blocking schemes.” Cuba, understandably disappointed, stayed alive winning the third set. They couldn't sustain momentum, with the USA taking an 8-6 lead into the first technical timeout. “Today we didn't play like us,” Cuba coach Jesus Angel Cruz said. “We were very quiet. We didn't play like a Cuba team. Only the third set was good.” Cuba did not drop a set in their first four games, which included a win against Canada during the group stage. “I feel bad – we didn't meet our target,” said Roamy Alonso, who was named the tournament's top blocker. ”It was the final and the team was under a lot of pressure.” Canada earned the bronze medal after defeating Guatemala 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-19) on Sunday.

Canada sweeps bronze-medal game against Guatemala at U21 men's championship GATINEAU, Canada, July 10, 2016 – Canada nabbed the bronze medal by defeating Guatemala 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-19) at the U21 NORCECA Men's Continental Championship on Sunday. Sharone Vernon-Evans had a match-high 13 points (including an efficient 12 kills from 21 attacks) to help Canada, whose world championship qualification hopes were dashed by their semi-final loss to Team USA on Saturday, win in front of an appreciate host nation crowd at Centre Sportif de Gatineau. Canada also received 12 points from Taryq Sani and nine from captain Matthew Mawdsley. Guatemala's top shots were Carlos Lopez with eight points (seven kills from 16 attacks) and captain Erik Flores with seven (all kills, from 18 attacks). “This is a huge stage for all of us – not a lot of us have been to this level,” the 17-year-old Vernon-Evans said. “It's a big tournament, playing the Cubans and Americans. We had hoped to qualify [for the 2017 FIVB world U21 championship] but this is not the end. We'll do better next year. Next year is going to be better for sure. Once you've been there, the nerves are out.” Canada converted 40 of 69 attacks and Guatemala put down 24 of 63. Canada held out middle blocker Pearson Eshenko and setter C.J. Gavlas subbed in late, which was a precaution measure against aggravating injuries each had sustained earlier in the tourney. Derek Epp stepped into Gavlas' role. “I think our players now know what the international level is about,” Canada coach Gino Brousseau said. “They got to play the U.S. and Cuba. We told our players that this is just the beginning ...[Saturday] night was a tough loss. I am pleased our players put away our performance and kept going forward. Today they managed well. “Our setter [Gavlas], his body was pretty banged up – same for our number 10, Pearson [Eshenko],” Brousseau said in reference to the lineup changes. “I didn't want to push them again. They gave so much, since the beginning. I have so much respect for those players. They have to play their season [in Canadian Interuniversity Sport].” Save for wishing they could have made Canada sweat out the first two sets, Guatemala left the court with no regrets. By making the last four, they got in nine sets against Cuba and Canada, both significantly taller teams. “In the first and second set, our energy was very low, and this is shown in the result,” Flores said .”In the third set, we were more motivated and we finished the game in a better way. We need to concentrate more for a better result, and we could have done better. We achieved a good place in fourth in the tournament.” Guatemala's purpose for coming was to tune up for the upcoming Central America U23 championship, which is set for July 23-Aug. 1 in Panama.

“We would like to congratulate Team Canada because they played well,” Guatemala coach Reider Lucas said. “We are going to get better from this experience. We have come to a high level tournament and we know our level. We can improve our play.” Barbados finished fifth in the tournament, with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados finishing sixth and seventh.

Saint Vincent earns sixth at U21 men's championship, overcoming Phillip's 31 points GATINEAU, Canada, July 10, 2016 – Saint Vincent and the Grenadines finished their U21 NORCECA Men's Continental Championship in sixth place after defeating Trinidad and Tobago 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21) in a hard-fought classification game. Saint Vincent setter Shevron Caine kept his front-row mates well-fed at the Centre Sportif de Gatineau. Ronaldo Franklin scored 20 points (18 kills from 43 attacks), outside-hitter counterpart Asmond Franklin tallied 16 (all kills from 35 attacks) and middle Marcus Thomas also scored 16 (including a match-high four blocks). Trinidad and Tobago ran mostly through captain Marlon Phillips, who set a tournament single-high with 31 points (with 30 kills from 63 attacks). Saint Vincent was a tough more proficient throughout the match, converting 53 of 115 (46.1 per cent) of its attacks whereas Trinidad was 45 of 117 (38.5%). Thomas also bounced back after taking a hard fall to the floor on the decisive point of the first set. “Our performance today was very good compared with the other games we played,” Saint Vincent captain Delshun Welcome said. “I believe if we had this performance that we played today, in our other matches, we would have had a win. We played really good even though some of our players were injured. We dropped our game [level of intensity] in earlier matches – we typically play harder than this,” added Welcome, who scored eight points. “Our game wasn’t there, but today it was more of our game.” Nine Saint Vincent players are 18 or younger, indicating their core group of juniors have some potential. “It was a much better performance today,” Saint Vincent coach Vance Andrews said. “I think the team had really good composure in the game. In the other matches, they played in patches, but in this game they played more of a complete match. “We are going back and working on all the mistakes we had in this tournament. I want to keep working with these guys.” The match slipped away from Trinidad in the second set, during the span between technical timeouts. Caine served six consecutive points to put Saint Vincent into a 16-12 lead. The defeat put Trinidad in seventh place. “It was a hard way to finish the tournament after all of the work we put into developing,” Trinidad setter Kameron Donald said. “It was not a satisfying loss because we did not achieve the goal we came with. Congratulations to Saint Vincent. They fought hard for the victory.” Trinidad's motivation to come to the U21, where it played Cuba and Canada in the group stage, was to help foster growth for Donald, Phillip and outside hitter Adriel Roberts (who scored 11 points on Sunday). All three teenagers are considered future senior team players.

Page 23: Bulletin No 7 Men U21 Continental Championship- Gatineau. Canada

“We have three guys who will factor in significantly as we push for the 2018 world championships,” Gideon Dickson said. “We needed to give them exposure at a high-level competition. They did in fact have a good tournament.” Canada and Guatemala meet in the bronze-medal game later Sunday, while Cuba and USA play for the gold-medal and worlds berth to wrap the tournament.
