ASCENSION OF OUR LORDOn the fortieth day after Easter we celebrate the feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ. The feast commemorates the return of ourRedeemer to Heaven. It is a day of victory for our Lord, a day of triumph that He fully merited. Christ left the throne of His Father, humbled Himself in the womb of the Virgin, lay in Bethlehem in a rough stable, fled from His own people into Egypt and spent years inNazareth as a common laborer. Tirelessly He searched for the lost sheep of the house of Israel. His own brethren repaid Him with nothingbut unkindness and misunderstanding. Then, beginning on the Mount of Olives and ending on Golgotha, He patiently paid the price of ourredemption. All this He did because He loved us, because He sought to free us from Satan's power. This work is now complete. Hereturns to heaven as a conqueror. The Son stands before the Father by whom He was sent and whose will He so perfectly performed. The Liturgy reflects the somber mood of the apostles, who at first felt lonely and uncertain without their Lord. "When the Apostles sawYou ascending the clouds, O life-giving Christ, they frowned deeply and mourned with tears, saying: Do not leave us orphans..." (sticheraof vespers). But at the same time, they were filled "with great joy" because they "were gladdened with the promise of the Holy Spirit."The troparion, among many other hymns, describes this joy: "You ascended in glory, O Christ our God, and delighted the disciples withthe promise of the Holy Spirit; through this blessing they were assured that You are the Son of God, the Redeemer of the world."For us too, the Ascension is an occasion of deepest rejoicing. The glorification of Christ in this mystery is also our glorification. It is theelevation of our human nature. Our nature now shares divine honor as, in human form Christ our brother enters heaven. The future is nolonger cloudy. We will be with Christ. We will be at home, for He is our way. We amend the selfless words of Thomas who said, "Let usalso depart so as to be able to die with Him," to say instead, "Let us go to live with Him!"

In those days as we were on our way out to theplace of prayer that we met a slave girl whohad a clairvoyant spirit. She used to bringsubstantial profit to her masters by fortunetelling. The girl began to follow Paul and therest of us shouting, These men are servants ofthe Most High God; they will make known toyou a way of salvation. She did this for severaldays until finally Paul became annoyed, turnedaround, and said to the spirit, In the name ofJesus Christ I command you, come out of her! Then and there the spirit left her. When hermasters saw that their source of profit wasgone, they seized Paul and Silas and draggedthem into the main square before the localauthorities. They turned them over to themagistrate with this complaint: These men areagitators disturbing the peace of our city!Furthermore, they are Jews, which means they

The crowd joinedin the attack on them and the magistratesstripped them and ordered them to be flogged. After receiving many lashes they were throwninto prison, and the jailer was giveninstructions to guard them well. Upon receiptof these instructions he put them in maximumsecurity, going so far as to chain their feet to astake. About midnight, while Paul and Silaswere praying and singing hymns to God astheir fellow prisoners listened, a severeearthquake suddenly shook the place, rockingthe prison to its foundations. Immediately allthe doors flew open and everyones chainswere pulled loose. The jailer woke up to seethe prison gates wide open. Thinking that theprisoners had escaped, he drew his sword tokill himself; but Paul shouted to him, Do notharm yourself! We are all still here. The jailercalled for a light, then rushed in and felltrembling at the feet of Paul and Silas. After abrief interval he led them out and said, Men,what must I do to be saved? Their answerwas, Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will besaved, and all your household. Theyproceeded to announce the word of God to himand to everyone in his house. At that late hourof the night he took them in and bathed theirwounds; then he and his whole household werebaptized. • Today is one of the most powerful days of celebration on thecalendar because it honors the first person you ever met - yourMom. You'll probably pay tribute to her, her motherand other mothers in your life on the second Sundayin May. In one form or another, Mother's Day iscelebrated in dozens of countries around the worldand has a long history. Even the ancient Egyptians,Greeks and Romans had holidays to honor certainmother goddesses. Much later, in 16th-centuryEngland, the fourth Sunday of Lent became Mothering Day,which, in turn, became an opportunity for separated familymembers to gather with Mom as the guest of honor. Two womenare most closely associated with the celebration of Mother's Day as

we know it: Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. The first is famous for writing the "Battle Hymn of the Republic"which became an anthem for the North during the Civil War. She also campaigned against slavery and for the rightsof women, promoting a Mothers' Peace Day, and eventually Mother's Day itself. Somewhat later, Anna Jarvisdreamed of establishing a Mother's Day, first and foremost to honor her own mother, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis. Oneday, her mother ended a Sunday school lesson on "Mothers of the Bible," by saying, "I hope that someone, sometime will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders tohumanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it." After her mother's death, Anna Jarvis worked to see that hermother - and all mothers - got that special commemoration. In 1908, Anna Jarvis's own church in Grafton, WestVirginia, and another in Philadelphia proclaimed a special Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. Carnationswere presented to each mother who was present. Within a few years, a number of states had made the day officialand in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day. Yet ironically, within just a fewyears, Jarvis, who never married or had children, became disillusioned with the commercialization she saw growingattached to the holiday she had worked so hard to spread. "A printed card means nothing except that you are toolazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world," she said. "And candy! You take abox to Mother - and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment!" Without a doubt cards and candy are stillprominent features of Mother's Day today, as are flowers and a special visit with Mom to her favorite restaurant. And those adult kids who can't make it back home see to it that there are more long distance calls on Mother's Daythan any other day of the year. Still, for all the extraneous trappings and overt sentimentality associated with theday, the essence is worthwhile: Mother's Day is a time to express love and gratitude to the most special lady in theworld Mom. Maybe it would be a good idea if moms and dads, children and grandchildren - indeed, the wholefamily - used the day as a centerpiece of their mutual affection and respect 365 days a year.
