The feast commemorates the transfiguration or metamorphosis of Christ on Mount Tabor, when our Lord appeared in His divine glory before the Apostles Peter, James, and John. The event of the Transfiguration is recorded in three of the four Gospels: Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28-36. Jesus took the Apostles Peter, James, and John with Him up upon a mountain, and while they were on the mountain Jesus was transfigured. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became glistening white. Moses and Elijah appeared with Christ, talking to Him. Peter declared how good it was for them to be there and expressed the desire to build three booths for Moses, Elijah, and Christ. This reference to the booths could imply that this occurred during the time of the Feast of Tabernacles when the Jews would be camping out in the fields for the grape harvest; for this Feast had acquired other associations in the course of its history, including the memory of the wanderings in the wilderness recorded in the Old Testament book of Exodus. While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice came from the cloud saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him." When the disciples heard this they fell on their faces filled with awe. Jesus came to them and told them to not be afraid. When the three looked up they saw only Jesus. As Jesus and His disciples came down the mountain, He told them not to speak of what they had seen until He had risen from the dead. Brothers and Sisters! God has put us apostles at theend of the line, like men doomed to die in the arena. We have become a spectacle to the universe, to angelsand men alike. We are fools on Christs account. Ah,but in Christ you are wise! We are the weak ones, youthe strong! They honor you, while they sneer at us!Up to this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, poorlyclad, roughly treated, wandering about homeless. Wework hard at manual labor. When we are insulted werespond with a blessing. Persecution comes our way;we bear it patiently. We are slandered, and we tryconciliation. We have become the worlds refuse, thescum of all; that is the present state of affairs. I amwriting you in this way not to shame you but toadmonish you as my beloved children. Granted youhave ten thousand guardians in Christ, you have onlyone father. It was I who begot you in Christ Jesusthrough my preaching of the gospel. I beg you, then,be imitators of me.

At that time a man come up to Jesus andknelt before him. Lord, he said, take pityon my son, who is demented and in a seriouscondition. For example, he often falls intothe fire and frequently into the water. I havebrought him to your disciples but they couldnot cure him. In reply Jesus said: What anunbelieving and perverse lot you are! Howlong must I remain with you? How long canI endure you? Bring him here to me! ThenJesus reprimanded him, and the demon cameout of him. That very moment the boy wascured. The disciples approached Jesus at thatpoint and asked him privately, Why couldwe not expel it? Because you have so littletrust, he told them. I assure you, if youhad faith the size of a mustard seed, youwould be able to say to this mountain, Movefrom here to there, and it would move.Nothing would be impossible for you. Thiskind does not leave but by prayer and fast-ing. When they met again in Galilee, Jesussaid to them, The Son of Man is going to bedelivered into the hands of men who will puthim to death, and he will be raised up on thethird day.
