PAGE TWO NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 9, 2015

We live in a world where people are hungry more for spiritual sustenance than for physical food. Knowing peo-ple’s need and hunger, Jesus

offers himself, his own Body and Blood. Jesus, the Bread of life, not only satisfies our physical hunger as we saw a few Sunday’s ago in the Gospel read-ing but also satisfies our spiritual hunger. Today’s Gospel is a longer and more detailed discourse on the Bread of Life. The earlier part of the discourse talks of bread as a sign of God's loving care for the people. Like the manna in the desert, Jesus repre-sents God caring for the people in a new way. But the part we hear in today's Gospel is more specific; it not only invites us to satisfy our spiritual hun-ger, but also to deepen our faith in Jesus, the Bread of Life. The first reading describes the physical and spir-itual hungers experienced by the prophet Eli-jah. The “Bread of Life” Jesus speaks about is pre-figured in this reading by the miraculous food with which the angel nourished the Prophet Elijah in the desert while he was fleeing from the soldiers of Queen Jezebel. After being nourished by the Lord, Elijah was strengthened for the long journey of forty days to Mount Horeb where God instructed him to continue his prophetic work. The second reading presents Christ Jesus, the “Bread of Life,”

as a “sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.” Paul reminds the Ephesian Christians that, instead of seeking satisfaction in anger, slander, bitterness, and malice, they are to nourish one another with compassion, kindness, and mutual forgiveness. Today’s Gospel describes Jesus’ discourse in the synagogue at Capernaum on his return there after his miraculous feeding of the five thou-sand. During the discourse, Jesus reveals himself as the true “Bread of Life that came down from Heav-en,” to give life to the world. Jesus proclaims him-self as the new and perfect manna, the Incarnate Son of God, literally "come down from Heaven." This means that the Holy Eucharist actually gives us a share of eternal life while we are still on earth. But some of Jesus' followers turned away when he explained the source of his mysterious power and his Heavenly origin. As believers, we are so fortunate to know the truth and be nour-ished by the Bread of Life. St. Augustine said that while we transform ordi-nary food into our body, the Eucharistic food transforms us into the body of Christ...” Let us rec-ognize that Jesus, whom we consume in the Holy Eucharist, is actually God who assimilates us into His being. Then, from Sunday to Saturday we will grow into Jesus, as

Prayer list for our Military

As a faith community, let us keep

all who serve our country during

these troubled times in our pray-

ers. We pray especially for those of our parish who

are serving.

If you have a friend or relative who is serving in our military, and want their name to be added on our prayer list, please con-tact the office at: (619) 463-6629 ext. or via e-mail [email protected].

Names in bold are newly added this week. Also pray for the special intentions written in the Book of Needs in the back of the church.

PRAY FOR RELATIVES AND OUR FAMILY

continued from page two….

Jesus grows in us, our lives will be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thereby, we will be-come more like Jesus. Thus, we shall share in the joyous and challenging life of being the Body of Christ for the world – Bread for a hungry world, and Drink for those who thirst for justice, peace, fullness of life, and even eternal life. The following are a few questions for prayer and meditation for this week. What do you remember about your First Holy Communion? Why was that day special to you? How do you think receiving the Body and Blood of Je-sus makes a difference in your life? Do you receive the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ with the same love and desire as you did on your First Holy Com-munion?

Two weeks ago I had the honor of taking 17 of our young people to the Steubenville San Diego Youth Conference. This 3 day event, hosted by Francis-can University, is a opportunity for 5,500 teens to come together to grow in love of God and strengthen their Catholic Faith. By listening to talks from renowned Catholic Speakers, worship-ping through dynamic music and most importantly experiencing Jesus through the Sacraments, many young people consider the Steubenville conference to be a life changing event. As a 10 year veteran of the Steubenville Conference I have seen the incred-ible works that God has done in the lives of young people by attending the conference. I want to share one of those experiences from this past trip. This year out of the 17 teens from Santa Sophia who attended Steubenville, only 3 had ever been before. One of the girls, who had never been before, was so nervous to go that night before coming to the church to meet up she had an anxiety attack to the point that she felt sick. After discussion with her mom, we decided that she would go for the 1st day but monitor her to see how she felt and to go from there. She ended up having an amazing time. By Saturday evening that same girl who was so nervous and so anxious, was standing up in that arena completely unafraid, committing her life to Jesus for the 1st time. By the time we arrived back on Sunday her mom said to me “I don’t know what happened, but I’m taking back a whole new daugh-ter.” What happened is that her daughter encountered the love of God in a bold new way. Here at Santa Sophia that is exactly what our Youth Ministry is doing, helping our young people experience the love of God and through that experience transform them in to lifelong Disciples of Christ. That is why I am asking you that if you know of a young per-son in your family, or even in someone else’ s fami-ly to encourage them to become a part of the Youth Ministry here at Santa Sophia. Yours in Christ, David Stevens Youth Minister

Before Steubenville, a conference for high school Catholics, my faith was wavering. I have not had a very religious upbringing, so I haven’t made my communion or my confirmation yet. Every time I went to Mass, I always felt like my faith was less and not good enough, and I could never see the point in trying to grow in faith. But the experienc-es I had with Jesus Christ and God during Steubenville changed my life and transformed my perspective on my level of spirituality. The speak-ers blew me away with their powerful perspectives. And the Masses, as well as the Eucharistic Proces-sion, united me with God and His never-ending love. Now I am committed to my faith and am growing closer to God every day. “ -Aoife

“During Adoration I felt like I actually got a lot closer to God. I felt like I was holding his hand, more than that I felt like I was hugging him. I feel like I opened up to God and opened my eyes , and I opened new doors to experience God in and it was just a great experience over-all.” -Matt

“At Adoration on Saturday Night, it was the first time that I truly gave my all to Christ and asked Him to remove any obstacles that pre-vented me from seeing Him clearly, from that profound moment I have been filled with an overwhelming amount of peace. “ -Bridget

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;

For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or

Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;

For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests;

For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you

The priests dearest to me; The priest who baptized me; The priests who absolved me from my sins;

The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me

Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me;

All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way

(especially……………..….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,

And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity
