    : i i .(5: 12 - 20)

In those days through the hands of theapostles, many signs and wonders occurredamong the people. By mutual agreement theyused to meet in Solomons Portico. No one elsedared to join them, despite the fact that thepeople held them in great esteem.Nevertheless more and more believers, menand women in great numbers, we continuallyadded to the Lord. The people carried the sickinto the streets and laid them on cots andmattresses, so that when Peter passed by atleast his shadow might fall on one or anotherof them. Crowds from the towns aroundJerusalem would gather, too, bringing theirsick and those who were troubled by uncleanspirits, all of whom were cured. The high priestand all his supporters (that is, the party of theSadducees), filled with jealousy, arrested theapostles and threw them into the public jail.During the night, however, and angel of theLord opened the gates of the jail, led themforth and said, "Go out now and take yourplace in the temple precincts and preach to thepeople all about this new life."

Gospel: John 20: 19 - 31 i: i 20: 19 - 31On the evening of the first day of the week, even though the disciples had locked the doorsof the place where they were for fear of theJews, Jesus came and stood before them."Peace be with you," he said. "When he had saidthis, he showed them his hands and his side.At the sight of the Lord the disciples rejoiced."Peace be with you," he said again. "As theFather has sent me, so I send you." Then hebreathed on them and said: "Receive the HolySpirit. If you forgive mens sins, they areforgiven them; if you hold them bound, theyare held bound." It happened that one of theTwelve, Thomas (the name means "Twin"), wasabsent when Jesus came. The other discipleskept telling him; "We have seen the Lord!" Hisanswer was, "I will never believe it withoutprobing the nail prints in his hands, withoutputting my finger in the nail marks and myhand into his side. A week later, the discipleswere once more in the room, and this timeThomas was with them. Despite the lockeddoors, Jesus came and stood before them."Peace be with you," he said; then to Thomas:"Take your finger and examine my hands. Putyour hand into my side. Do not persist in yourunbelief, but believe!" Thomas said inresponse, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus thensaid to him: "You became a believer becauseyou saw me. Blest are they who have not seenand have believed." Jesus performed manyother signs as well - signs not recorded here -in the presence of his disciples. But these havebeen recorded to help you believe that Jesus isthe Messiah, the Son of God, so that throughthis faith you may have life in his name.
