Sports Day is on Sunday 26th MarchOne of the reasons St. Dominic’s keeps its Annual Sports Day on a Sunday is to enable us to interact as a community together and for you our parents to be involved with your daughter’s school in ways that are not possible during the busy week at your workplace.
Special information and requests for New and familiar Parents re Sports Day
Did you know that there is a traditional Mother and Daughter and Father and Daughter relay in Primary and Secondary, the last event on Sports Day? All welcome.
Have you taken into account the fact that your daughter needs to be at the Sacred Heart College Oval at 8:45 a.m.? Please familiarise yourself with the map included in today’s Bulletin, to ensure you are on time.
The Sports Day Raffle book went home last Friday. Please sell these tickets to friends and family. All proceeds support sporting equipment at St. Dominic’s. Thanks to those who have already brought theirs in.
If you can assist with transport to Sports Day for a student who is without transport would you let us know through the reply slip in today’s Bulletin? Thank you.
Would you consider responding to the special requests from P&F Presidents Michelle Hogan and Jo Duffy re the Sports Day Parent Roster? Details inside.
Has your daughter told you that she is able to start school late on Monday 27th March at 10:50? If she is not at Sports Day she comes instead to school at the normal time.
SPORTS DAY RAFFLE BOOKS have been sent homePLEASE SELL THEM ALL!
Preparing for Sports DayIt is Tuesday night as I write this letter and I am not alone. In the meeting space is a small group of parents who are the sub-committee for Sports Day giving their time and expertise to ensuring that on Sunday 26th March at Sacred Heart College Somerton everything will be ready for a great family Sports Day. When you are reading this page give the organisers a sign of your support by volunteering to help on a stall or on the field for a half hour. Sign up to bake some cakes. The community grows strong by the gift of your time. Your children get to see what joyful service really does for us for a community. When you see the excellent prizes in the Sports Day Raffle be aware that one of the money prizes was donated by a friend of the College whose niece finished Year 12 several years ago.
Below is a handy check list. Please read it carefully. While it is designed particularly for
new parents it is well worth checking out!
Dear Parents,
MYP Information Evening A very interested group of parents from Year 6 – 9 joined us last Wednesday night. They were parents whose children were enrolled this year in Year 8, and Primary parents whose children are moving in to the IB Middle Years Programme. MYP Coordinator Aurora Reid delivered a comprehensive overview of the Program. Staff member Sr. Hieu Tran had translated the presentation for our Vietnamese first language speakers which was much appreciated. I was impressed by the wide range of questions from Parents – a good sign that you are prepared to engage strongly with your daughter’s learning.
St Dominic’s Priory CollegeGrowth MindsetIdeas for Creating a Growth Mindset Environment at Home• We can’t expect our children to have a growth mindset if we
don’t have one ourselves. Recognise fixed mindset thinking in yourself and talk yourself into a growth mindset. This can be done out loud so that your child can hear how you are changing your mindset.
• Be aware of fixed mindset statements such as “I’m a terrible cook” or “I was never good at maths either”
• Be aware of blaming genetics for everything – both positive and negative
• Be careful about comparing your children to their siblings or other children
• We want our children to enjoy the process of learning – not just be successful. Model this concept at home. Look for ways to improve on various endeavours, the fun is the journey to improvement.

Year 5 Paper Bag Book ReportsThe Paper Bag Book Reports have kept the Year 5 Class busy throughout this term. Each member of the class had to choose a book that interested them, read it in their own time and create six items that related to their story. There was such a great variety of choices and some of the novels chosen included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Spy Society. Once the items were chosen we had to write descriptions about why we chose each item and then we presented our bag to a small group of our peers, our Year 1 buddies and our parents during an open night. It is evident from the bags that everyone put a lot of effort in and enjoyed their first assignment for the year. - The Year 5 Class

SPORTS NEWSYear 10 SurfingOn Friday the 10th of March, the Year 10 HPE class participated in an excursion to Goolwa beach, where we were involved in a day of surfing. After arriving at our destination, we were geared up into wetsuits and given a surfboard in which we shortly learnt some skills to increase our chances of standing on the boards in water, as well as some safety skills. After hitting the water, some of us were able to stand up and ride waves into the shore. It was extremely fun to have the opportunity to learn the basics of catching waves and have fun with our friends. It was a valuable experience and we would like to thank Mr Grant and Miss Ward for taking us out for the day.

Year 7 French Sorbet MakingOn Thursday 2nd March, the Year 7 French class made chocolate sorbet. We used four ingredients which were water, sugar, chocolate cocoa powder and vanilla. We then mixed them together with a sorbet machine. We put it in the freezer until the following week. On Wednesday, we had a taste in the gazebo and it was delicious! It tasted like chocolate and was a mouth-watering sensation. Some people say a “(sore)bet” hurts when it leaves your mouth but we think it hurt when it was finished. We all agreed that it was amazing!

Year 12 Visual Arts: Visit to National Gallery of VictoriaOn March 8, the Year 12 Visual Arts Studies Class met bright and early at Adelaide Airport to embark on a day trip to Melbourne primarily to view the David Hockney Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Having seen the exhibition earlier in the year, I couldn’t help but think how relevant this body of work is to young people today. The technologies and themes explored, and the enthusiasm of the artist to want to be challenged in exploring different ways to create art, is inspiring to anyone who is able to appreciate the visual arts. With the support of Sr. Jill, staff and parents, I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to organise an excursion of this type. In addition to the exhibition we visited Federation Square and some of the famous laneways of Melbourne that have become a canvas for street artists. The girls were very excited to have been a part of this inaugural trip, and have gained further insight into the world of the visual arts, as well as being inspired by one of the most famous living artists in the world today.

Year 8 Civics and CitizenshipFor the past six weeks, the class of 8W have been looking at civics and citizenship in History with Ms Reid. We’ve learned about laws, how they’re made, about lobbying, and how to change a law. Last Wednesday, we presented campaigns in groups at recess and lunch.
First, we researched what we wanted to change about the law in order to create a more fair and just society in Australia. We asked questions, and found the answers, and together in our groups, decided on a final law to change.
We each played a part in preparing the campaign, from making posters, to preparing petitions and surveys - everyone had an important role. The topics that we campaigned for were incredibly varied, ranging from local issues like changing in and out of our sport uniforms at school, and upgrading our laptops, to federal issues such as transgender rights and banning the advertisement of sugar.
During recess and lunch, we collected data from our surveys and petitions, which we’ll be analysing in the next few days. We became aware that not everyone agreed with us, and this is an important part of belonging to a democratic country. Over the course of this topic, I truly feel that we learned a lot about our country’s political system, and I’m sure that a lot of us really enjoyed the opportunity to campaign for a fairer and more just society.

Cyber Smart Year 9sUnderstanding the serious implications of using the social media that is available to us has been a theme for topics covered in the Year 9 Pastoral Care program this term. In week 4, Sonya Ryan spoke to parents at the Parent Information Evening, and the following day presented enlightening facts to the student cohort. This week we invited Crime Prevention Sargeant Peter Winter from SAPOL to speak to the girls about cyber safety. It was very interesting to have a police officer’s perspective on this topic, as there are a number of criminal offences that can occur as a result of using social media inappropriately. As we all know there are many dangers that our children can potentially be exposed to or involved in, often quite innocently, in using social media. In the case of internet safety, we need to understand the technologies that our children are using and have the confidence as a parent to remain vigilant.
Josie Revesz, Year 9 Coordinator
Our Street Family Matters Year 12 Society and Culture guest speaker Aileen JeffriesOn Thursday the 9th of March, the Year 12 Society and Culture cohort was fortunate enough listen to Aileen Jeffries, who spoke in about her new non-for-profit charity, ‘Our Street Family Matters’. She delved into the various realities and stereotypes surrounding homelessness in South Australia. Her motivation behind her support for the homeless people of our community was inspiring and allowed us to understand the enormous amount of hard work and determination that she and her organisation puts into helping eliminate the stigma surrounding youth homelessness through the slogan ‘fundamental dignity for our homeless’. Her insight and knowledge enabled our classes to gain a deeper understanding of the factors causing homelessness and the reality of how it can happen to anybody at any time. The Year 12 Society and Culture classes thank Aileen for informing us about homelessness and inspiring us to make a difference in our community; whether it be small or large. AJ was thrilled to receive our donation of $120 (presented by Kelsie Gaffey), raised by all Year 12 students at a morning tea during the week.

Did you miss the new MYP Parent Information Evening?
Last Wednesday, we held a bilingual parent information evening for all parents new to the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. It was great to see so many families come along to hear about the curriculum we offer in Years 6 to 10. Topics that were covered included: inquiry based learning; conceptual understanding; learning support; assessment and reporting. All parents with daughters in Years 6-10 are encouraged to peruse the International Baccalaureate website www.ibo.org for further information. You will also find the slide show from the evening in the Middle Years section of our website under the Learning and Teaching Tab. There are two versions, one
in English and one in Vietnamese. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Aurora Reid (MYP Coordinator) [email protected]
