    Disability and Industrial Society

    This project was funded by the Wellcome trust and is about

    how peoples experiences of and ideas about disability

    changed when Britain became more industrialised.

    To find out more about this the team have organised two

    focus groups to look at how peoples lives now compare to

    what they were like in the past.

    The groups will meet at Disability North on the 18th and

    19th March 2014, between 11am and 3pm. Lunch is

    provided.

    Creative Communication Training

    CAN Communicate are running a Creative Communication

    Day to teach people about the ideas, theories and skills

    needed to use creative communication with people with

    profound and multiple learning disabilities.

    Dave Hingsburger talks in Middlesbrough and

    Newcastle

    Dave is a great speaker, writer and thinker about getting

    things right for people with a learning disability. Dave is not

    in this country very often and is doing two talks.

    Jobs First Evaluation: Final Report

    Jobs First was a Department of Health project that was

    carried out by the Social Care Workforce Research Unit. Itlooked at supported employment for people with learning

    disabilities. They have released a report of their findings,

    including a summary report and an Easy Read summary.

    The Children and Families Bill

    The Council for Disabled Children (CDC) and In Control

    are working together to look at what the Children and

    Families Bill will mean for people. Thisincludes the setting

    up of personal health budgets for children.

    There will some events in February and March which will

    look at what the bill says and what it will mean for Clinical

    Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and other parts of the

    health system.

    All of the events will be from 10am - 3pm and lunch will be

    provided.

    Survey for Developing a Voice for Advocacy

    The Mental Health Foundation (and the Foundation for

    People with Learning Disabilities)wants to find out whatpeople think about making sure advocacy has a stronger

    voice.

    Anyone who is interested in advocacy can have a say.

    supporters.

    Taxi Contracts with Bradford Teaching Hospitals

    People First Keighley and Craven had raised an issue with

    the Bradford Strategic Disability Partnership Board about

    the overcharging of disabled people by some taxi firms.

    Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust hasnow renegotiated

    their contract with the local taxi company, Girlington Taxis.

    The charge for all Girlington taxis booked through thehospital, or by people going to and from the hospitals willnow be the same for everyone.

    SIBS Information for Siblings of Disabled

    PeopleSibs is a charity that provide information for siblings

    (brothers or sisters) of adults or children with disabilities.

    They are asking schools to count the number of pupils who

    are siblings so that they are supported in school. If you

    work in school, or in partnership with a school let them

    know and they can send out copies of their Siblings inSchools leaflet. You can see the leaflet here:

    Unlimited Programme for Disabled ArtistsUnlimited is a new programme which will support disabled

    artists to develop ambitious and high quality work. It waslaunched in December 2013 and will run for three years

    You can now apply to be on this programme.

    People can apply for awards for existing work at an

    advanced stage or for the initial stages of a new project.

    Unlimited aims to support work that is: innovative, varied,

    excellent and led by disabled artists. Unlimited is about art,not disability: some work may reference disability, some

    may not.

    The Wilf Ward Family Trust are running a club night for

    adults with learning disabilities in Leeds.
