The 110pufotion of tl1e str•tn in 1000 is 2,210,381 as against 1,887,858 in 1800, representing an increase since 18ll0 of 878,078, or 20.0 per cont. 'I'.hia mto of increase is only a little more tha11 tJutt fol· tho decade from 1880 to 1890, when it was lll.1 per cont, and is a little mo1·0 than two-thirds that for the clecaclc from 1870 to 1880, when it was 80.2 per cent. Georgia had a population at the :first census, in 171lO, of 82,548, but it increased by 1880 to 510,628, and by 1800 to 1,057,,286, having more than doubled during the 3{) years from 1880 to 1800. Sinco 1860 its population has again more than doubled, and is now considerably in excess of two millions.
The population of Georgia in 1900 is very nearly twenty-seven times as large as the population given for 1700, when it was only 82,548.
The total land surface of Georgia is, approximately, 581980 square miles, the average number of persons to the square mile at the censuses o:f 1890 and 1900 being as follows: lBl:lO, 31.l; 1900, 37.5.
Table 2 shows the population of Georgia by counties at each censns from 1700 to 1000, inclusive, while table s, which im.mediately follows, shows, for eaoh county, the increase (or decrease) by number and per cent during the ten years from 1890 to HIOO.

Of the above named 372 incorporated places there are only 40 that have a population in 1900 of more than 2,000t
and of these only 13 have a population in excess of 5,000. Atlanta Augusta, and Savannah are the only cities in Georgia that have a population in 1900 of more than 25,000,

1 Not scpnmtely returned in 1850; in 1852, according to a census taken by local 11uthoritles, it had a population of 11,753.
As shown by this summary, .Atlanta, the largest city in the state, has a population in 1900 of 89, 872 as compared with a population of only 2,572 in 1850; in 1890 it had a population of 65,533, representing an increase during the past ten years of 24,339, or 37.1 per cent, as compared with an increase of 75.1 per cent during the preceding ten yea1·a, Savannah, the second largest city in the state, shows ai1 increase of 25.5 per cent from 1890 to 1900, its present population being 54,244 as against 43,189 in 1890; it had a population of 5,166 in 1800, or less than one-tenth of its population .in 1900. Augusta, the third largest city in the state, has a population in 1900 of 39,441, showing an increase of 6, 141, or 18.4 per cent, since 1890 as compared with an increase of 62.1 per cent from 18 so to 189 O.
