Throughout one’s school career Grade 12 is viewed as the ultimate year, the year in which you have to account for what you learned in the decade before, and the year whose results will follow you for the rest of your life.“There are at least fi ve reasons why Grade 11 pupils should take this year very seri-ously, and put as much eff ort into it as they will next year,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of The Independent Institute of Ed-ucation — SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education provider.

She says the penultimate school year is a signifi cant one because it provides:

1) Insurance“The eff ort you put into Grade 11 can be

considered as insurance should something go awry in the future,” says Coughlan. “There are an increasing number of institu-tions that make provisional off ers based on your Grade 11 results, and many will still admit you even if your Grade 12 is a litt le less strong. But if your results in Grade 11 are weak, you have nothing to fall back on.”

2) Exam focusTeachers set Grade 11 exams to mimic the

format and complexity of grade 12, says Coughlan. “That means that taking your Grade 11 exams seriously will help you un-derstand how you are doing and how ready you will be for your fi nal exams. It helps you to work out where you need to apply more focus. “This year’s exams provide a measure

of where you are, and should be treated as part of your preparation for your fi nals.”

3) Opportunity to experimentCoughlan says that Grade 11 allows some

time for experimenting before crunch-time arrives. “Learn new study methods and stress management methods, and experi-ment with things you have not done before, like study groups and mind maps. Finding a variety of study techniques and approach-es that work for you will allow you to enter Grade 12 with a revision system that will make you perform at your best.”

4) Opportunity to test timingIf you keep good track of how long it takes

you to master diff erent kinds of work, that will allow you to draw up an accurate study plan next year. “Knowing your pace of work means you will be able to revise with enough time allocated right from the start, so that you don’t run out of days before you run out of work to revise.”

5) A chance to carefully evaluate post-matric options

Assessing their Grade 11 results and per-formance empower pupils to make bett er de-cisions about their post-school direction, in-cluding about which options are available to them, what courses to apply for and where. “Pupils should start working out their ‘points’ for higher education entrance from Grade 10,” says Coughlan. “This means they should thoroughly research the courses they want to study and the results they need for

their application to be accepted. In Grade 11, pupils are then able to monitor how realistic their aspirations are and where they need to do more work, which will reduce uncertain-ty when applying.”

Matric does not start in your last year of school, Coughlan says. “Matric is not a year-long event, but rather a two-year long pro-ject. If you start applying your mind to your fi nal exams right now and take the long view coupled with a strategy, you will be able to deliver your absolute best when you sit for your fi nals in a year and a half’s time, and signifi cantly improve your chances of being able to follow your dream post-Matric.”• The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) is the largest, most accredited registered private higher education institute in South Africa. It has a history in education and training since 1909, and its brands - Rosebank College, Varsity College, Design School Southern Africa (DSSA) and Vega - are widely recognised and respected for producing workplace-ready graduates, many of whom become industry-leaders in their chosen fi elds. The IIE off ers a wide range of qualifi cations, from post-graduate degrees to short courses, on 20 registered higher education campuses across SA.

Why it pays to take Grade 11 as seriously as Matric

What pupils and parents don’t realise, is that Grade 11 can arguably be considered as important, if not more so, than

one’s nal year, an education expert says.

Dr Felicity Couglan

Daar is

More traffi c law enforcers have been de-ployed along major routes of Limpopo, in preparation for the Easter holidays. This was announced by Limpopo’s MEC for Transport, Safety, Security and Liai-son, Ms Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, at the funeral service for four people who died in die horrifi c bus accident in Georges Valley two weeks ago.

The accident left ten people dead. The mass burial of the four people was held

at Mashishimale outside Phalaborwa. A memorial service for the other seven ac-cident victims was held in Nkowankowa.

The memorial service was att ended by hundreds of people, most of them being members of the Zion Christian Church and the St Engenas Zion Chris-tian Church. Representatives from the Great North Transport bus company and the Road Accident Fund were also in att endance.

Mokaba-Phukwana also ap-pealed to church leaders, com-munity leaders and teachers to promote road safety.

Investigations into the cause of the accident contin-ue. Also see page 4 for the latest about the Georges Valley road that has been closed to general traffi c.

The dangerous sinkhole on the R528 Georg-es Valley road has collapsed rendering the route unsafe for motor vehicles. Motorists were warned of a dangerous sinkhole form-ing in the middle of this road in last week’s Bulletin.

Less than 48 hours aft er an inspection team visited the scene — on request from mem-bers of the Georges Valley Residents Associ-ation — and determined the route to be un-safe, the inevitable happened.Bulletin published a video highlight-

ing the dangers of travelling on this road on Monday. The video went viral and in a matt er of hours reached more than 170 000 viewers over social media. The viewers con-demned local and provincial authorities for their failure to react to the warning signs be-fore this disaster occurred, and their seeming reluctance to remedy the situation.

The sinkhole has been cordoned off with barrier tape and 44 gallon drums. Large signs have been placed on either side of the hole to warn motorists of the impending

danger, should they pass by it. The opposite side of the road, as one travels from Haen-ertsburg in the direction of Tzaneen, has been semi-closed with two large heaps of rubble and sand placed a few metres from the hole. A small section was cleared in the centre of this heap to allow light motor vehicles to pass through. No other warnings have been placed anywhere in the vicinity of this hazard which leaves motorists with no clue as to what awaits them, as they round the blind corner fl anking the sinkhole in either direction.

Local provincial traffi c chief Victor Khumalo was on the scene on Monday and Tues-day and expressed his concern over the matt er. “This is a very serious situation and we have to have this road repaired as

a matt er of urgency. The road signs we have placed here to warn people to be cautious have been moved out of the way by someone. Initially we thought it might be the residents,

but we now believe that it might be someone looking to make money from the damaged vehicles that will need to be towed away.”

According to the Department of Trans-port, the coming Easter weekend is of great concern to them. “We urge all road users and especially the bus and truck drivers not to use the Go-erges Valley road. It is not suitable for use, but we have made provision for the residents who live along that route to be able to do their daily com-mute. At this stage the Department of Public Works has appointed a con-tractor which will commence repara-tion work on that site as soon as this week,” said spokesperson Kagiso Mootane. “Our law enforcement will be mobilized to see to those people who are risking the lives of other road users by removing the barri-cades we have placed there.”

Foreseen: Georges Valley sinkhole collapses

The daily deterioration of the sinkhole on the Georges Valley road can be seen in the images above from left to right. The movement of the road surface is clearly noticable from Friday (far

left) to Saturday (middle) and fi nally a complete collapse on Monday morning (top right and be-low). Authorities have barricaded this section of the road to avoid injuries or casualties.

Local traffi c is being directed away from the R528 Georges Valley road, following the collapse

of the sinkhole. Motorists are advised to use the R71 when traveling from Tzaneen to Polokwane.

In so ‘n mate dat hy dikwels laat was vir skool.

Dit lyk nie vir my so nie?”

Today’s local hero is Mr Vic Khumalo, the chief traffi c offi cer of Limpopo’s provincial traffi c department in Mopani. He acted speedily and strongly when the road crisis

in Georges Valley developed.

Phelophepha train welcomed in TzaneenThe Transnet Phelophepha Healthcare train’s fi nal stop in Limpopo was Tzaneen, where it was stationed until this morning (Thursday). It left Tzaneen for Acornhoek in Mpumalanga.

The health-care services provided from the train are largely free of charge or off ered at an exceptionally low cost to communities in rural areas. The services include a den-tal clinic, eye clinic, psychology clinic and health clinic screening cancer and diabetes.

The Healthcare train manager, Ms Lynett e Flusk, said the main ob-jective of Phelophepha is prevention and ear-ly detection of medical conditions, as well as screening and educa-tion by making people aware of the impor-tance of looking aft er their own health.

“The train is meant to deliver vital healthcare services to people in

rural areas who would otherwise not have access to a doctor or be aware of any health problems they may or may not have. Our challenge is that patients oft en sleep over in order to be accommodated the following day,” said Flusk.

Ms Mahlogo Gladys (78) from gaMamai-la Kolobyetona outside Modjadjiskloof, said having arrived at the station at 04:00 in the

morning was worth it, because she received medical att ention. “I am excited and fi nally I will have a bett er vision with the Phelophepha spectacles,” said Mahlogo.

University of Limpopo fourth year student in Optometry, Ms Thasi Manganyi, said it is hectic and challenging to work in the Trans-net Phelophepha healthcare train. “There’s a lot of work here. We experiment with some

things which we only studied the-oretically and I am happy to be part of the team,” said Manganyi.

Ms Terita Sekgobela (77) from Mohuboya Village in Maake was in the queue waiting to be assist-ed in the clinic. “I have a problem with my waist and my legs are swollen and I have been sitt ing here for so long now,” said Se-kgobela. “But I am happy that I would be helped.”

The train visited Mookgophong, Mokopane, Polokwane and Makha-do before it came to Tzaneen.

On Saturday morning a body of a 09 year old was found in Masegwani river in Xihoko Village outside Tzaneen.

The boy is said to have been there with his friend swimming when the water overpowered him where the friend ran home and informed the community though he couldn’t say what really happened, the community then responded in time, ran to the bush-es where they started searching for the boy and his body was later found.

They managed to remove the deceased and rushed him to the nearest local clinic where he was declared dead upon the arrival.

Early this month, the South African Weather Ser-vices warned of heavy rainfall in Limpopo which brought in fl ash fl oods and overfl owing of rivers and dams. During crime awareness in Fofoza Primary

School MEC of Transport Mapula Mokaba Phukwa-na also warned and pleaded with parents/communi-ty members not to allow children to play or go any-where near rivers.

The South African Police Service is calling upon members of the community to ensure child safety at all times especially during these rainy seasons. Members of the community together with commu-nity leaders are also advised to monitor the dams and rivers in and around their areas and children are found swimming they should be removed in order to prevent this type of incidents from happening.

An inquest docket was opened and the police are busy investigating.

Various borehole contractors have been confronted on issues pertaining to the new boreholes drilled in Ward 11 (Thapane) — but the Hydro-Ge-ologist responsible for most of the contractors tried to downplay the rift between the contractors and the community leaders.

Some community leaders got very angry when the Hydro-Geologist insisted on drilling to a depth of six-ty metres, instead of eighty to one hundred metres, as was stipulated in the borehole handover ceremony last year.

The tensed Hydro-Geologist, Mr Mosiye Seakamela, said “we have drilled sixty metres deep for the com-munity of Bokhuta, because I realised that the water levels or depth remained the same from forty metres to hundred metres.

“There are only two dolerite rocks at Thapane, meaning we cannot just drill where ever we want or where the coun-sellor and the com-munity needs the borehole to be.”

The borehole in question was drilled by Kurima for the community of Bokhuta to a depth of sixty metres and has not been tested yet.

Mr Matome Mo-

pai, one of the community leaders in Ward 11 said boreholes which cost millions to drill and to construct, ran dry within a very short time. These boreholes, he said, became white ele-phants due to the sixty metres depth, while borehole equipment got worn out and the replacement was too costly to replace the equipment.

“When the contractors were con-fronted, they denied everything. However, a common problem in our area (Bolobedu) is non-functioning boreholes,” said Mopai.

The councillor for Ward 11, Ms Let-tie Hlangwana, did not agree as the same strategy being implemented

by the contractors had failed in the past when thirty boreholes were drilled in Bolobedu. “An example is a borehole in Mapitlula which was drilled to a depth of seventy metres but two years later it became a white elephant,” said Hlangwane.

Mr Kediboni Matsha, an engineer who was assigned for inspection at Thapane, said some contractors were not complying to the borehole standards. He refused, however, to say what action will be taken to rec-tify the situation.

• Checkers, waar die winkelbe-stuurder gesê “we will not respond to your enquiry”;

• Game, waar die persoon wat die medianavraag ontvang het net dank-ie gesê, omgedraai en weggestap het;

• Shoprite, waar die bestuurder gesê het “journalists twist words and I will not react”;

• Woolworths, waar die bestuurder gesê het “ons mag nie op medianavrae reageer nie, net ons hoofk antoor; maar ons is bewus van vergaderings wat al oor die probleem gehou is”;

• PicknPay, wie se bestuurder die indruk by ons gelaat het dat hy be-kommerd is oor die toedrag van sake. Hy het egter ook gesê hy mag nie kommentaar lewer nie;

rooiskool se o.19 meisies-afl osspan die seisoen onoorwonne was.

“For every good reason there is to lie, there is a bett er reason to tell the truth.” – Bo Bennett

The NTK-MHS Rugby Week was present-ed for the fi rst time this past week (18 to 22 March) at Merensky High School.

Belhar High School from Bellville in the Western Cape, Standerton High School, DZJ and Hudson (community teams from Nkowankowa) as well as a Barbarian team and the fi rst team from Merensky enjoyed the spirit and warmth of rugby lovers in the beautiful Tzaneen surroundings.

Several players were honored for their out-standing performance on the fi eld: Lyle Mar-

cus (Belhar) as backline player of the week, Almu Julies (Merensky) as tight forward player of the week, MJ Bench (Merensky) as loose forward player of the week, Tony Masedi (Barbarians) as best kicker and Jason Wessels as the player that scored the most tries.

Belhar won trophies for the best spirit as well as the team that played the most spectacular rugby. Merensky claimed a trophy

for the best disciplined team. The plate winner of the week was Merensky, and Belhar-walked away with the cup, the champions of the week.

A prestige NTK team was also selected to tour to Italy as an in-vitational team during August this year.

Aft er what has been achieved during this week, and with the ongoing support of Francois Froneman (executive manag-er), Wynand Benadé (trade operations manager) and Frik-kie van Vuuren (senior branch manager, Tzaneen) from NTK, this event promises to become one of the prestigious rugby weeks in the country. In 2017 eight teams from around the country will be invited.

The second round of the Raga Bolo Street Soccer tournament kicked off in Polokwane this past weekend. Despite a heavy down-pour which delayed the proceedings, seven teams pitched up for the event. There was a greater crowd contingent this weekend, due to a growing interest in this traditional town-ship sport.

This was the second round of an eight week tournament. Spectators were not disappoint-ed in the top-class action football on show, as a total of seven games kept them entertained well into the aft ernoon.

The Polokwane leg of this national tourna-ment coincided with sixteen other matches played across the country in various divi-sions. The winner of the Limopo In-land North division will meet the winners of the

Mpumalanga league at the end of April, to determine which side will face the Gauteng winners in the fi nal to be played later this year in Johannesburg.

The wining team will take home R100 000 to the benefi t of their team and the local tavern they are associated with. “This is a fantastic initiative and we as a community are very privileged to be a part of this tournament. It is a very creative way to keep the youngsters off the street and perhaps even showcase some of the natural talent that can be found in the townships, to grow future soccer talent,” said one community member.

The next round will commence on 2 April in Sheshego outside Polokwane.
