Dis mos lekker. En so verstaan die kleindorpiemense v.i. (Vlieg insiens) mekaar.

Vlieg verstaan nie altyd nuwe tegnologie so vinnig nie, maar hy ken darem die verskil tussen double you, double you, double you en double cross you, double cross you, double cross you!

• It is a fact that mr Pravin Gordhan sorted out the SAID and then as Minister of Finance, steered the government’s financial ship well (within the restrictions placed on him by the government). Now he is Minister of Local Government, meaning he holds the reigns to monitor provincial as well as municipal governance. Do you think that we can expect an improvement on these two levels of governance?

Greater Tzaneen Mayor Dikeledi Mmetle said most of the major projects for which the GTM had budgeted millions of rand to have them implemented in this current financial year, are progressing well.

Speaking during a special council meeting at Matipane village in Ward 1 where a budget for the financial year 2014/15 of R996 million (R77m up on the previous year) was adopted, Mmetle said the projects include the Sasekani to Nkowankowa road, the Nkowankowa Section C ring road and another six roads.

According to Mmetle the 2014/2015 medium term revenue and expenditure framework includes a budget for the Greater Tzaneen Development Agency as well as budgets for water and sewer services of which the GTM is only the service provider.

“We have have embarked on the implementation of a range of revenue collection strategies to optimize the collection of debt owned by

consumers. Furthermore, council is currently undertaking a billing data cleanup exercise, which has already yielded good results,” she said.

In tabling the budget, she said an amount of R1,5 million has been provided to accommodate the increase of 7% for councillors’ allowances. The repairs and maintenance budget has been increased by R5 million to accommodate much needed repairs and maintenance to roads and the electricity reticulation.

R1,9 million has been provided on the information technology budget for the rental of computer hardware and software and to ensure that licences are renewed and anti-virus and backup systems are in place. An amount of R200 000 has been provided for the training of councillors in addition to the R380 000 that was provided for this purpose during the 2013/2014 Adjustment Budget. An additional amount of R100 000 has been provided to ensure the smooth functioning of the Municipal Public Account Committee and R100 000 for disaster relief.

The remuneration for Traditional Authorities was also increased to R100 000.

An additional amount of R75 000 has been provided for the subsistence and travel allowance for councillors. The acquisition of land in Nkowankowa for the establishment of a cemetery would be reduced from R1 million to R800 000. The Talana Hostel programme has been adjusted to cost R350 000 instead of R500 000.

A substantial increase on the operational budget is largely due to the significant increase in salaries, repairs and maintenance, depreciation and Eskom’s tariff for bulk electricity purchases. The expenditure includes R251 million for salaries, R125 million for repairs and maintenance and R269 million for the purchase of bulk electricity and water.

— Uitgewer

Cable theft is increasing in Tzaneen, with another Telekom landline cable — the third in a week — stolen at Minitzani on Tuesday night.

Telekom landline owners and internet subscribers in parts of Medi Park and Central were left stranded after cables were stolen in Agatha Street and Peace Street last week. To provide its services, Telkom had to insert new optical fiber cables. In addition, old hydraulic keys are replaced with new lockable ones on manholes. In this way, explained technicians, thieves should fail to steal more underground cables.

Multiple murder concernThe SA Police Service has expressed concern about the multiple murders in the Ritavi and Bolobedu Police districts. Three people were found killed by unknown criminals over the past three weeks in Tarentaalrand, Khujwana and Khopo. “We call upon all residents to refrain from walking alone at night and to always stay vigilant, said Lt Col Ngoepe, spokesperson for the SAPS in the Tzaneen cluster. Police investigations regarding these incidents are ongoing.

SAPS response on shooting rage

Tzaneen police cluster spokesman Lt Col Ngoepe expressed grave concern about the recent deaths in shooting incidents in a relatively small area in Bolobedu. He again encouraged communities to participate in community police forums (CPF’s), in order to strengthen relations with the SAPS. “We are busy with investigations to locate the suspects and to determine what could have led to the multiple shootings which claimed three lives. CPF’ are there to assist communities and as police we advise residents to make use of them. No arrests have been made but our

investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Suspects of murder in court Five of the six suspects accused of killing a woman they suspected of witchcraft appeared in the Giyani magistrates court. Ntokozo Nkuna (37), Regional Makhuvele (33), Erick Matsimbi (33), Vonani Nkuna (27) and Madala Nkuna (29) are accused of beating Catherina Nkovani (52) with various objects before setting her alight after they had accused her of witchcraft.

The incident happened on 28 April at Thomo village near Giyani, a day after the burial of the victim’s cousin, a 34-year-old woman, whom she was accused of having bewitched. Ntokozo Nkuna, Makhuvele and Matsimbi were granted bail of R1 500 each, while Vonani Nkuna and Madala Nkuna remained in custody. Accused No 6, Peaceful Nkuna (41), did not appear in court because her child took ill and was admitted to hospital.

Rape suspect nabbedThe 61-year-old owner of the Pot & Plough Restaurant in Magoebaskloof, Gary Barnes, has been arrested by police for the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl; who is said to be

pregnant. The teen’s unidentified guardian reportedly informed the local police after learning that the teen was impregnated by an old man four times her age. The suspect was arrested for statutory rape. He was released on R1 000 bail and he is expected to reappear in court again on 2 September. Further DNA tests and police investigation are said to be underway.

Villagers exhume corpse

The residents of Shawela village, Giyani, exhumed the body of Glen Mothomoholo (29) on Saturday night, just a week after he was buried amid confusion over his identity. The deceased apparently disappeared last year in August in Pretoria where he was doing piece jobs. His family members searched for him, without success — until recently when they were informed that their loved one was in a Pretoria mortuary.

When his body was brought home the family started to fight over his identity, with some arguing that it was not him. Those who insisted that it was indeed the body of their loved one were the deceased’s mother and siblings and a few individuals. The man

was then buried excluding some of the key members of the family and members of the community.

The people who exhumed the body said DNA tests should be conducted to confirm the identity of the man. “All of us know that the deceased was not an old man… what they brought here is the body of an old man,” said Mr Hlayisani Rikhotso, a community leader.

The community also accused the mother of the deceased that she had gone ahead and buried the man without verifying his identity. “We therefore want all of them gone by today and not tomorrow,” he said. After negotiations with the police the mother and siblings packed up and left to settle in Nsavulani village.

Police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto said a case of desecration of a grave as well as malicious damage of property will be investigated.

Sigh of reliefBolobedu police caught 55 suspects who were allegedly terrorising the community over the past week: 24 people took part in drinking in public, malicious damage to property, assault, non- compliance to a maintenance order; fifteen people were apprehended for illegal gambling, shoplifting, and accusing others for practising witchcraft; sixteen people were held for attempted murder, robbery and assault.

Sale of home brewed beer is prohibited

Selling traditional home brewed beer is illegal, according to the Department of Economic Development, Environment Affairs and Tourism spokesman Buckles Napo. Illegal traders caught selling ‘Umtlomboti’ should be prosecuted, he added. It is alleged that most of the beer brewers pour battery acid in ‘Umtlomboti’ to give it more kick. Tzaneen SAPS Cluster spokesman Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe said “we condemn any illegal sale of beer and people who see illegal beer being sold to people should inform the police”.

Taken into custodyDuring the past week Tzaneen police arrested 133 people: twenty for being involved in theft, assault, shoplifting, crimen injuria and accusing others of witchcraft; 26 were held for illegal gambling, possession of dagga and suspected stolen property; 87 people were caught for prostitution, drinking in public and for disregarding traffic rules.

Many motorists fined

Many reckless and negligent motorists have been given heavy traffic fines over the past few weeks. Our discussions with the GTM’s traffic chief, Mr Johannes Malatjie, about lawless motorists have clearly resulted in some action being taken. Over the past week many traffic officials were seen enforcing law and order. Malatji said that “no one is above the law and those who choose to disregard the traffic rules will be penalised. Our officials are on patrol and no negotiations will be entertained”, said Malatjie.

CRIME SCENEBulletin Crime Reporter

The charred body of Katrina Nkovani (too gruesome for a close up) lies in a street while police and residents wait for it to be picked up.

Traffic officers of the GTM have been rather busy lately, making sure that motorists stop their lawless conduct.

The deceased’s family (the Mothomoholos) are seen here outside their house waiting to leave their convenient house due to pressure by the community.

Home brewed consumers are seen here exchanging a glass of “Umtlomboti” which they say comes much cheaper than the real product.

Serebrale malaria eis Fransie Olivier

Volgens familielede was hy

Residents at Mo-rapalala village, Bolobedu, are con-cerned as the con-struction of the 6,8 km road has now been reduced by a kilometre due to a lack of funds.

The tar road will thus no longer end at the junction of the road from Mad-umane village to Mookgo Block 6.

Ons Mening

What a messWe are now convinced that at the Greater Tzaneen Municipality the left hand does not exactly know — maybe not even vaguely — what the right hand is doing.

Alternatively municipal officials tell bla-tant lies and deliberately feed the media (or try to) with false information.

Either way it is shocking and if it con-tinues we will be left with no alternative but to report the matter to the provincial authorities. It could even be necessary to take it to national level, since misleading the ratepayers cannot be tolerated.

Recently, when the GTM’s electrical en-gineer also acted as municipal manager, he granted us an interview about the street light problem in Tzaneen. He explained the problem in detail (it is called trans-parency) and we got a clear picture of the vastness and complicated extent of the problems faced by his department.

He also pointed out that there was no provision for a major revamp in the budget and that the GTM was waiting for a grant from the Department of Energy.

The GTM’s official spokesperson, who is ever so often not available for comment, confirmed this. However, the GTM’s chief financial officer now claims to have R4,4 million available for a project to be under-taken by a contractor.

A 70-year-old lady from Tzaneen, Ms Shirley Venter of Macadamia Village, experienced a rather unique visit to Fiji. She told her story to Sue Ettmayr, one of our senior journalists. This interesting report

is another contribution in our exclusive series about our senior citizens and their experiences.

It’s not often that someone at the age of 70 vol-unteers to work in an impoverished foreign country on the other side of the world. That’s exactly what Ms Shirley Venter from Macada-mia Retirement Village in Tzaneen did.

Venter retired from Woolworths in Tzaneen two years ago, where she ran the administra-tive office for 22 years. She grew up in Paarl in the Cape. Her adult son lives in Australia and her daughter in Freiburg, Germany.

Some sixteen years ago Venter began dreaming of going to the island of Fiji, as it was reputed to be so beautiful. Now retired, she started to plan her dream. She didn’t just want to go on holiday but wanted do some good as well. She also didn’t want to be there alone. That’s why she loves the Damia, as Macadamia is fondly known. She’s got many friends there and is never alone.

Venter surfed the internet and found “Vol-unteer abroad”. Ironically, the first option was Fiji. She flew to Fiji via Australia and was placed with a family in a rural village called Dratabu. She spent a few days at a kindergarten with 46 children. Conditions there were unacceptable. Not one to shy away from confrontation to resolve issues, Venter sought a consultation with the village

chief. He arranged a meeting with the school committee and her complaints were deemed valid. This resulted in her and the parents cleaning the school in a day.

Venter felt the children were too young and requested a transfer to a primary school. She gave each kin-dergarten child a much appreciated toothbrush as a fare-well.

This school had been previously do-nated with ten mon-itors and although it had been set up, it had not been used. Venter started com-puter classes for en-thusiastic and excit-ed five to seven year olds. She did all the school administrative work. She also set up the headmaster’s sys-tems and got his work up to date.

English is the medium of instruction at all Fijian schools. It’s a difficult and different “kind” of English as there are many dialects.

She used to walk “home” for lunch every day and pulled out vegetation in the fields with local women every afternoon. She would pull out mainly cassava; she’d wash it and took it to the market early the next

morning. She loved this interaction with the local women and admired the cordial way in which they sold their items. These women would also cook meals for the others coming from the other is-lands. Venter started giving them advice on managing their meagre incomes.

The cassava root is turned into casa, a traditional drink.

The root is pounded into a fine powder and then washed in a large basin with water. It’s drunk out of a communal half a coconut shell. It numbs the body and she only tried it once.

Meals are served on a woven grass mat on the floor. Vegetables aren’t cut up but cooked

whole. Each breaks off their own piece. She found the root vegetation — cassava, taro and tapioca — hard to digest. She also had to get used to eggplant with every meal. Venter was served the fish head, as it’s a mark of respect towards a visitor and regarded as a delicacy. She persuaded them not to repeat the favour.

Venter managed to squeeze in a visit to two different islands wanting to catch those mag-ical sunrises and sunsets. She saw her sunset, sitting on the beach, overlooking the water, but she almost missed the 05:00 sunrise. Be-cause she is slightly deaf, so didn’t hear the alarm. She awoke with a start, threw open the curtains of her wooden chalet and saw the most beautiful sunrise. During the day she feasted her eyes on the coral reefs.

En route home, she spent time with her son in Australia. It was an unforgettable experi-ence. Not only did Venter realize her dream but she made a valuable contribution to many Fijian lives.

Whether it’s chilly inside or out, a hot water bottle slipped into a soft cloth cover is a classic comfort. The covers are small enough to sew with wool remnants and larger scraps.

Here’s how to make a cozy one for yourself in four simple steps:

STEP 1Print the pattern pieces and

tape together. Cut out front-bottom piece and back piece from 1 of the wool fabrics; cut out front-top piece from another fabric.

STEP 2Fold seam binding over the

straight edges of the front

pieces; stitch in place, ¼ cm from edge. Lay front-top piece right side up, and fold straight edge up 2.5cm. Press.

STEP 3Align back piece and 2 front

pieces, right sides facing, so that front-bottom piece overlaps front-top piece slightly. Pin and stitch around the perimeter with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Notch curves on both sides of neck.

STEP 4Turn right side out, and press

flat. Slip hot-water bottle through front flap.http://www.marthastewart.com/266745/

What you need (serves 2-3)•1 chicken flattie•4 tbsp Peri-Peri Oil•½ - 1 tsp Peri-Peri Spice (depends how hot you like it)•2 Peri-Peri (bird’s-eye) fresh or ¼ tsp dried chilli•3-4 cloves of garlic chopped•½ tsp grated fresh ginger•Juice of a lime or lemon•¼ tsp Salt•¼ tsp black pepper Ingredients for the Peri-Peri oil:•6 Peri-Peri (bird’s-eye) fresh or ½ tsp dried chilli•3-4 cloves of garlic chopped•2 tbsp Olive Oil•½ tsp grated fresh ginger•Juice of a lime or lemon•¼ tsp Salt•¼ tsp black pepper •1 tbsp sweet smoked paprika•2 tbsp white wine vinegar•1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

What you need

(makes 1 loaf )•500g self-raising flour•1/2 tsp salt•125g cheddar, cut into small cubes•340ml beer •50ml water•1Tbsp fresh thyme•50ml sesame or sunflower seeds•Maldon salt to sprinkle on top

What you need

(makes +- half a cup)•1 tot salt (I like to use high-quality salt flakes and then crush them.)•1/2 tot ground black pepper•1/2 tot paprika•1/2 tot crushed garlic powder•1/2 tot ground coriander•1 tsp cayenne pepper (or chilli powder)•1 tsp ground cumin•1 tsp ground cloves•1 tsp ground nutmeg•1 tsp ground allspice (pimento)

PREP 15 MINS - MARINADE 1HR-24HR - COOK TIME: 30-40 MINS1. Preheat the Braai to 180°C (360°F).2. Place your chicken flattie in a dish.3. Score the chicken deeply.4. Pour the Peri- Peri Oil over the chicken making sure that you rub it into all the cuts and on both sides. This is going to help marinade the chicken as well as make sure that it does not stick to the grill.5. Sprinkle the Peri spice all over, once again making sure that it gets into all the cuts and on both sides.6. Mix the chilli, garlic, ginger, salt, pepper and lime/lemon juice together crush or grind into a paste and spread over the chicken, again make sure that it covers everything.7. Leave to marinate over night or for at least 1hr, the longer the better.

8. Place on the braai open-side up and cook for 15 mins, turn and do the same on the other side. Turn up the braai and brown off, if needs be for 5-10 mins, you don’t want it to burn but you do want the skin to be nice and crispy, to caramelise and give you that great braai taste. Keep an eye on how things are going, you don’t want it to burn. 9. After 30 mins of cooking poke a knife into the leg or thigh and see it the juice runs clear, if it does its cooked if not give it another 5-10 mins and check again. Serve with rice, chips, coleslaw and/or a fresh salad.

Pre-heat the oven to 180C. Grease a small loaf tin.Sift flour and salt together in a mixing bowl. Stir in the beer, cheese, water and thyme. You can add a little water if the dough is too dry. Mix until all the flour has been moistened and the dough forms a cohesive mass.Transfer the dough to the loaf tin, sprin-kle with seeds and Maldon salt and place in the pre-heated oven.

Test with a skewer after about one hour when the top is golden brown – if the skew-er comes out clean, remove from oven.Serve with plenty of butter.NB – leave to cool for 10 minutes or so before you slice!

1. If some of the ingredi-ents are too big or coarse, solve the problem by tak-ing them for a spin in your coffee grinder or give them some love in your pestle and mortar.

2. Put all the ingredients in a glass jar, then close the lid and shake it well. Use as needed to season steak, chops or chicken. The salt mix also works very well as a dry rub on large meat cuts like beef brisket or pork belly.3. Over time you might develop more than one mixture for different meats. For chicken you might want to drop the cloves and the nutmeg and add an item like parsley.4. Perhaps your pork

spice will also have some mustard powder in it, for example. But then you would have to kick out one of the other ingredi-ents, as there are already ten, which is a nice round number. Who wants his own tailor-made braai salt with eleven ingredients? The creative process does not stop at choosing the ingredients. You might also want to choose a nice glass container or stainless steel shaker to keep your tailor-made braai salt in.

A flueless bio-fuel fireplace has entered the market as a new product with many benefits for the home user.

The Avani burner is only for domestic use and has a heat-ing capacity of 40 square me-ters. It is made of stainless steel and high temperature ceramic, which is available in black or white.

It uses bio-ethanol which burns without releasing emis-

sions or unpleasant odour. It is environmentally friendly and needs no yearly maintenance. Bio-ethanol releases vapour, so it does not dry out the air like other fuels. It is light and can be transferred from room to room and even outside (with the nec-essary safety precautions).

The Avani contains a mem-brane in the burner which ab-sorbs the bio-fuel to prevent spillage as it is portable. It has a fuel capacity of 1,5 liter and burns 4-5 hours.

More about this friendly burn-er can be seen on the Facebook page Heatwave Polokwane.

Here are five tips to get your fireplace working for you this winter:

1. Prepare your wood properlyMake sure your firewood is

properly dried and seasoned before burning it. Wet wood can create excessive smoke and waste fuel. To test the moisture level of your firewood, consider using a wood moisture meter. Properly dried wood should have a moisture reading of 20 percent or less.

Four Simple Steps to ensure your firewood is cut and dried properly:

• Split: Split the wood in a range of sizes to fit a stove or fireplace. For proper burning, don’t cut pieces larger than 15cm in diameter.

• Stack: Stack the split-sides down and off the ground to allow air to circulate around the wood.

• Cover: Cover the top of the stacked wood with a heavy-duty tarp to protect it from the rain.

• Store: Store softwoods for a minimum of 6 months and hardwoods 12 months before use.

2. Source your wood locallyIf you’d rather not store wood in your yard for 6

months to a year before using it, you can purchase firewood from a distributor. To reduce the carbon footprint of your wood and ensure proper burning, shop locally and request only dry, seasoned wood.

3. Learn before you burn: Although starting a fire may sound like a simple

thing, there is a very specific way to build a strong, clean-burning fire and create more warmth with less wood.

Three steps to getting the fire right:• Start the fire small with dry kindling and proceed to

make it bigger by adding a few pieces of wood. Give the fire plenty of air by fully opening air controls until it roars.

• Burn the fire to heat the chimney or flue before adding more wood.

• Keep space between the firewood as you add more, and maintain a bright, hot fire – don’t let it smolder.

To maintain proper airflow, regularly remove ashes from

your fireplace, put them into a metal container with a cover and store it outdoors.

Never burn garbage, cardboard, treated lumber or plastics as these items can damage your stove and cause serious health issues.

4. Getting the most from your fire: Circulate that toasty air

As most fireplace-users know, the warmth from your fire tends to stay in the area around your wood-burning appliance rather than circulating efficiently through the room. To help move trapped hot air near the ceiling, run ceiling fans counterclockwise and on low speed. This helps redirect warm air from the ceiling down the walls and into the living space. Improving the insulation in your home can also increase comfort levels and prevent your cozy warm air from going to waste.

5. Maintain your fireplace and replace it as necessaryMake sure you have a certified chimney sweep to

annually inspect your wood-burning appliance and chimney for any gaps, cracks or creosote build-up. A clean chimney provides good draft and reduces the risk of chimney fires. If you burn wood to heat your home, use the cleanest wood-burning appliance possible. For less smoke inside or outside the home, use a certified and properly installed wood stove or fireplace insert. Having your fireplace checked annually by a certified chimney sweep helps improve efficiency and reduces the risk of chimney fires.

Five tips to get the most out of your fireplaceOpting for firewood instead of a heater for warmth this winter can be a very effective way to reduce your carbon footprint and save ener-

gy. Getting the fire system wrong, however, can be a cause for hazards and rob you of so much rest and comfort.

Have you always wanted a herb gar-den but have no idea where to start? Herbs are some of the easi-est, most grateful plants to grow both out-doors and indoors.

Planning your garden: Check which bottled herbs you have in the cupboard and which herbs you use the most often. Firm favourites include basil, rosemary, mint, parsley, corian-der, lavender, thyme, sage and oregano.

Shopping for herbs: Some herbs (like basil, chives, lemongrass, parsley and thyme) do best when they are bought as seeds.

Claustrophobic herbs: Spacing your herbs the correct distance apart is also important, as overcrowded plants will go hungry. Herbs in general do not need a lot of space, one square metre is enough for about ten plants.

Don’t let all your effort go down the drain: Drainage is very important for growing fresh

herbs. Grow your herb garden in soil that drains well or improve the drainage by adding organic matter (compost, peat moss, compost-ed manures). If you choose to plant your herbs in a container, make sure it has at least one hole in the bottom.

Soil solutions: Herbs will not grow in wet clay soil so use good-quality potting soil that will also ensure adequate drainage. Herbs grow best in slightly alkaline soil, so if you think your soil is too acidic, sprinkle some lime juice over it. The lime juice acts as a catalyst that will help the herbs make the most of the soil’s nutrients.

Where will your garden grow?: The best site for your herb garden will be the sunniest and least windy spot in your garden or house. Group herbs according to their requirements.

Place herbs that re-quire lots of sun with like herbs and group shade loving plants together. Growing your herb garden in a big pot is a good idea, because then you can bring it inside in the winter and you can move it around to get the most sun. A win-dow box or individual

pots for each herb are also ideal. Herbal sun worshippers: Location is the

key to a successful herb garden. Most herbs grow best in full sun, but partial shade will often do. The rule of the green thumb is for the herbs to get a minimum of four to seven hours of di-rect sun per day. If this is not possible, your herbs will still grow, but they might be a bit scraggly and disease prone, so give them a lit-tle extra attention. Herbs that prefer full sun in-clude: basil, chives, dill, oregano, rosemary, tar-ragon and thyme. Herbs that prefer partial shade include: chervil, lemon balm and mint.

Herbs for every occasion: Are you crazy about Italian food or do you prefer French cuisine? Here are some tried and tested herb-al gardens to suit your taste: A taste of Italy: thyme, sweet basil, oregano, majoram, italian parsley. A French connection: sage, chives, tarra-gon, chervil, parsley. Going green: celery, rock-et, salad burnet, garlic chives, parsley. Heaven scent: pineapple sage, lemon thyme, lemon balm, rose scented gernium and lavender.

Here are some of the most common and loved herbs and how they like to be treated:

1. Basil: Plant type: annual. Soil: rich, moist, well-drained soil. Location: sun or partial shade; can grow indoors. Days to maturity: 85. Uses: use fresh or dried in pasta sauces, stews,

soups. Use fresh basil in salads or liquidise them with pine nuts for pesto. Sprinkle fresh basil on pizzas. Handy tips: pinch the centres as plants grow to encourage bushi-ness.

2. Coriander: Plant type: annual. Soil: sun or partial shade. Lo-cation: tolerates poor soil. Days to maturity: 90. Uses: the seeds and leaves can be used in curries, soups and stews or as a stuffing for chicken. Also used in cakes, cookies and breads. Handy tips: Coriander is known as dhanya in South Africa. You can pick young leaves at any time. If you want to dry them, place them on a wire rack in a

warm, airy place and then store in an air-tight jar

3. Lavender: Plant type: perennial. Soil:

moist, well-drained soil. Lo-cation: Sun or par-

tial shade. Days to maturity: 60. Uses: dried leaves and

flowers can be used in potpour-

ris, cosmetics or in netting sachets to keep your linen smelling fresh. Handy tips: before the

last flowers have opened, cut stems and hang in bunches upside down in a warm airy place. Once dry, remove the leaves and flowers and store them in an airtight jar.

4. Oregano: Plant type: perennial. Soil: well-drained soil. Location: sun, can grow indoors. Days to maturity: 60. Uses: can be used in any Italian dish. Fresh or dried leaves add flavour to soups, stews and pasta sauces. Sprinkle over pizzas, salads, vegetables and meat or fish dishes. Handy tips: pick fresh leaves when-ever you need them or cut stems just before the plant is in full flower. Dry them on a wire rack in a airy place then pick off the leaves and keep them in an airtight container.

5. Parsley: Plant type: biennial, although usu-ally grown as an annual. Soil: rich, moist soil. Location: sun or partial shade, can grow in-doors. Days to maturity: 75. Uses: fresh leaves can be used in soups, stews and sauces, or as garnishing on almost any dish. Parsley is also a natural breath freshner. Handy tips: Soak seeds for 48 hours to speed up germination.

6. Rosemary: Plant type: tender perennialSoil: well-drained soil. Location: sun or par-

tial shade, can grow indoors. Days to maturi-ty: 85. Uses: best in meat (especially lamb) or fish dishes and sauces. Also used in cosmet-ics. Handy tips: don’t worry if it doesn’t grow straight away, germination is often erratic.

7. Sage: Plant type: perennial. Soil: rich, well-drained soil. Location: tolerates poor, dry soil and grows well indoors. Days to maturity: 75. Uses: fresh or dried in beef and fish dishes as well as stews. Good for stuffing and is a com-mon sausage flavouring. Handy tips: well-drained soiled is a necessity

8. Thyme: Plant type: perennial. Soil: tolerates poor soil. Location: sun or partial shade, grows well indoors. Days to maturity: 70. Uses: fresh or dried in omlettes, bland soups and stews. Also a great stuffing for chicken or a flavouring for salads and roast vegetables. Handy tips: pinch back new growth to encourage bushiness.• Other useful herbs to grow are aloe vera, comfrey, feverfew, lemon balm, marigold and rosemary.

The community of Risinga village, Giyani, is living with a dire shortage of water, despite the fact that they live close to the dam that supply Giyani residents.

They drink from a well they dug themselves, to avoid having to travel long distances to fetch water. “Sometimes we have to go with-out water for a whole day when the well is dry,” said Ms Doris Maswanganyi, a resident.

When the well is dry the community push wheelbarrows to the nearby village to fetch water. “Our women are tired, and some are too weak to push wheelbarrows, ” said Mr James Chauke, during a meeting to discuss the problem. “When we see a cloud in the sky we become hopeful that it will rain, so we could have enough water in the well to avoid going far to fetch water,” he added.

The community has now requested the Greater Giyani Municipality to supply wa-ter tanks to the households, which the GGM could then fill with water.

“Failing to do that will result in us sabotag-ing the main pipeline to Giyani locations,” warned Mr Given Man’ombe, one of the lead-

Water crisis continuesers in the community. The headman in the village, Mr Patrick Chavalala, said “we have tried to engage the GGM and asked them to bring us water in tankers, but that happened only once and then stopped”. Here those with money enjoy fresh water... the rest of us have to drink from the well,” he said.

— Orlando [email protected]

Ms Adelaide Chauke is seen here climbing down into the well to scoop some water.

BV wen 44-11. Die Vossies se eerste span het

hul agtste agtereenvolgende wedstryd gewen.

The ‘Buffalo Stars’ of Ben Vorster High School were home to Rainbow Combined School last week. The u.16’s won by 3-2. The scoring was opened by Tumelo Maponya. The other two goals were scored by Matimu Mabirimise and Tsunzu Hlaniki. The Buffalo Stars were leading 3-0 at half time.

In the second half the visitors surprised the hosts with two goals, but it was the same old story: too little too late, and the Buffalos got away with a 3-2 win.

In the second match between

the bigger boys, the game was very fast with both teams trying very hard to win the battle in the middle of the park. It was no surprise when the ever green Mario Kgohloane put the hosts in front and that was the only goal of the game. The same Mario who put The Buffalo Stars in the lead was red carded minutes later.

The hosts played the better part of the game with one man down, but they still managed to clinch to the lead. The Buffalo Stars’ next game is against Helmeg. Who will emerge as the toast of the town?

The u.19 soccer players — the Buffalo Stars — of Ben Vorster High School are seen here. In the front are Mario Kgohlane, Billy Molokwane, Wisani Makhubele (captain), Vukosi Mathebula and Selby Kgohlane. Behind them are Millard Nyathi, Mandla Mlondobozi, Ntsako Nkwinika, Thato Moshokwa and Ben Bambisa. At the back are Sabarius Sedibe,

Langutani Mashimbye and Carl Sambo.

Stanford Lake College hosted the second race in the Limpopo Schools Cross Country MBT series. It was an awesome day for the event on their new XC track. Six schools with a total of 46 riders took part. SLC had eleven riders competing on the day, achieving some very good results, with seven of the riders finishing on the podium! In their various age categories these were Matthew Wilkinson, Bryce Reed (1st) , Benno Prinsloo (1st after a sprint finish!), Sarah Pogrund (1st & the series leader in her age group), Rebecca Desmet, Sarah Wilken and Stuart Lunt. The visitors were impressed with SLC’s facilities and how the event was run. The points standings after two races (Tour de Lip, Tour de Lake) are: SLC 259; Louis Trichardt 248; Frans du Toit 155; PHS 32; Hanglip CVO 24; Ridgeway 26. The last race in the Limpopo series will be tomorrow in Phalaborwa (Tour de Gat). Seen here in action at last week’s event is Byron Lucas on the new

single track section.

Giyani Boxing Club’s 22-year-old SA female bantamweight champion, Bukiwe Nonina, will face-off with Nolubabalo Nqgodelana from East London when she defends her belt tomorrow night in Giyani.

Nonina is a typical shy girl whose physical appearance hides the truth of being a boxer. However, her feisty personality is expected to be evident when she defends her bantam weight title for the third time since 2012.

Armed with a professional record of seven wins in nine fights and two losses, Nonina is not planning to let go of her belt. “I’ve been training hard for this fight, and I can assure you that when the bell rings to announce the end of the match, my hand will be lifted as the winner,” she said. She said she would use home ground

a d v a n t a g e to her benefit.

T h e f i g h t

will be

the first to be staged by Giyani Boxing Club in seven years. The founder and promoter of the club, Mr Bushie Mabunda, died around 2008, resulting in boxers quitting the club. Recently Mr Emanuel Mutavhatsindi took over as a promoter, and started training new boxers. He has urged residents of Giyani to support boxing.

Gavin, Marc and Graeme competed fiercely in their particular age groups against formidable opposition. Reese, the mainstay for the girls u.14, helped her team to overall victory by winning all her matches over the four days. She will now represent the SACD at No 1 for her age group at the IPT tournament to be held in June. Seen in the photo are Gavin Stirling, Marc Stirling, Reese Bain

and Graeme Harty.

Seventeen bow hunters from Merensky’s Archery Club travelled to Gauteng to participate in the revised format ABO/3di “Triple crown” competition over the past weekend. This competition is designed to test their skills over a very difficult terrain.

They are expected to estimate the

distance to a 3D ‘animal’, and by using only one arrow, hit the heart area. Contestants have twenty ‘animals’ to aim at, concluding with a maximum of 200 points and a possible twenty

bonus points. The Merensky bow hunters did

very well in the individual section. They competed against 250 other archers, and returned home with three gold, two silver and two bronze medals. The Merensky A team was awarded a bronze medal.

Seven of the archers qualified for their ABO provincial colours, namely Renart Botha, Ruan Genis, Beneche Jackson, Pieter van der Merwe, Adriaan Venter, Ricus Warmenhoven and Schalk Warmenhoven.

Merci beaucoup, mon amour!(*Grootste Afrikaanse Koerant)“The reason grandparents and grandchildren

get along so well is that they have a common enemy.” — Sam Levenson
