EMHS National Merit Semifinalists

This year, Edmond Memorial has eight National Merit Semifinalists in our Senior class! The prestigious scholastic competition recognizes students for academic success in the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year.

Nationwide, 16,000 students were named Semifinalists. The pool of Semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. The number is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation identifies the 50,000 highest scorers. 16,000 are designated Semifinalists. The other 34,000 high performers are named Commended Students and recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Along with our eight National Merit Semifinalists, Memorial had three Commended National Merit Scholars. Congratulations to all of these exceptional students!

Big Bad Bulldog Band takes 1st place

The Bulldog Band has had a great season so far, placing 1st at the Moore Outdoor Music Festival in September, and most recently placing 1st in their class and 2nd overall at the Mustang Nightrider contest in October. The show this year is titled Paradise Lost, and the band looks and sounds amazing. Make sure to catch their show at one of the upcoming EMHS football games, or come on out and support them at the Broken Arrow Invitational on October 15th. These students dedicate an amazing number of hours to the band, whether it be early morning or afternoon rehearsals, Friday night performances or Saturday competitions. We are proud of how they represent Edmond Memorial, and wish them the best of luck as they finish the season at the Oklahoma Bandmaster Association (OBA) contest on Saturday, October 29th. Class of 2020

It has been a fabulous start to the year! From athletic competitions to band contests to academics, we are certainly in full swing in the Freshman Academy. We have enjoyed getting to know your child and assisting them in their transition to EMHS. It is our goal to work collaboratively to help our students and parents throughout the 9th grade year to ensure success for everyone.

We value communication here at EMHS. Whether you have a question, concern, insight into your child’s performance or an acknowledgement of something great, we LOVE to hear from you! Please continue to contact us and your child’s teachers throughout the year with any needs. As we discussed during freshman orientation, students are now building their high school transcripts. It is critical that students are aware of the importance of their grades and making the progress necessary for their success. Also, it is vital that students are present in class daily and meeting attendance requirements. If you haven’t signed up for Parent Portal, please come by the Freshman Office soon to obtain access to your child's grades and attendance. Your child matters tremendously to us and we are looking forward to a wonderful year! Respectfully, Debreon Davis, Freshman Assistant Principal Kay Moore, Freshman Counselor

Mr. Matson chose to write this especially for MT2 and it will be the last play to be directed by this seasoned Oklahoma playwright/director/actor here in Oklahoma. This production is for kids of all ages! It will be performed in the lobby of the EMHS Auditorium on Friday, October 28th at 5:00pm, and on Saturday, October 29th at 10:00am at the Edmond Public Library. Chair seating will be limited. Basketball season is just around the corner Bulldog Basketball is rooted in deep tradition. Kansas Head Coach Bill Self is a former standout at Memorial and only one in a long line of players to play at the next level. There are currently 15 former Bulldogs playing at the next level. Jordan Woodward was instrumental in OU's drive to the Final Four this year. Kristian Doolittle will join Woodward at OU this year. Trey Steed and Caleb McCain play for Hillsdale College which won the NAIA Championship this past spring, and Trey was named National Player of the Year.

Coach Shane Cowherd shared some thoughts about this year. "A new season, some new athletes, brand new coaching staff, some new wrinkles, new expectations. I have loved watching my VERY young and VERY inexperienced team work harder than any group I've ever had throughout the off-season. Not complaining about the pain… in the weight room, in the sand, on the trails. And now, now we get to take the next step in the journey. October 1st is mere hours away". October 1st was the first official day of practice for high school basketball teams

around the state. The first game of the season is November 29th vs our cross town rival Santa Fe. The boys of the court need the best student section out in full force. We will have a special rally rag for that game and other fun activities to herald in basketball season. Go Bulldogs!

Choir students selected for COCDA These students auditioned for and were selected into the Central Oklahoma Choral Directors' Association Honor Choir (here at EMHS) last weekend. BULLDOG NEWSLETTER October 2016 Page 13

At the September MPO meeting, we approved our 2016/2017 budget. It’s targeted and intentional with only nine line items providing financial support for EMHS classrooms, teachers, and support staff. The MPO is not a Booster Club - the money we raise through our Bulldog Campaign has the ability to reach and benefit EVERY student at Edmond Memorial. State mandated budget cuts have forced $3.6 million in cuts to the EPS District. As a result, we have identified and prioritized two line items in our MPO budget: Teacher Grants and Principal/General Fund. (Allocated amounts are based on donations received and deposited as of 8/31/16.) TEACHER GRANTS – $5,000 allocated. The grant process begins in January with teachers completing and submitting grant applications for review. Final recommendations are sent to the February MPO meeting for approval and funding. Last year, grant requests totaled over $11,000, with the MPO funding $4,413. Examples of requested items were: Spanish novels, 3D printer and supplies, dry erase boards, science kits, geometry kits, and Apple TVs. As you can see, teachers are asking for items to help them be more effective in the classroom. This directly correlates to your student having a greater learning opportuni-ty. We expect this year’s grant requests to exceed $11,000. PRINCIPAL/GENERAL FUND - $2,500 allocated. This fund is available for the principal to draw from at any time - no grant process is needed. Last year, tablets and heavy-duty covers were purchased for our parking lot attendants. This year, the most pressing need from this fund is Professional Development for our teach-ers. Classroom instruction has moved beyond the simple textbook, paper, and pencil. Technology has dramatically shifted the traditional learning environment. Fully utilizing current technology and trends in education is crucial for our teachers. Due to budget cuts, the EPS district has placed a moratorium on out-of-state travel for Professional Development. To date, we are aware of almost $2,000 in Professional Development funding needs for this semester alone for just three teachers. It will be hard to stretch $2,500.

These highlighted line items are just two of the reasons we raise money for Edmond Memorial High School. Another 2,229 reasons are each student attending EMHS. (Continued on next page)

The Memorial Parent Organization served lunch to faculty and staff earlier this school year. We love our teachers and administrative staff, and appreciate the opportunity to thank them for their hard work and dedication to our children.
