    CITW Strategies

McRel has identified 9 strategies that have shown to effect achievement in learning.

Most of us remember seeing the list by effect as seen below.

The problem with this is that many teachers would instantly jump to recognizingsimilarities and differences because that was the strategy that showed a largepercentage gain.

The trouble with this is that before students are able to recognize difference they mustfirst develop understanding in a classroom environment set up for learning. McRel hassince reordered these nine strategies and grouped them as follows:

    Creating a Classroom Environment

    Setting Objectives

Organize your road trip. Know where you are going, the supplies you need, and basicroutes. Students should be aware of where they learning will take them.

    Providing feedback

    Use criterion-referenced feedback and explanations.

Always need to know when we are going to use this

Focus feedback on specific types of knowledge

    Give feedback on assessments

    Based on feedback, allow revisions.

    Engage students in peer feedback.

    Ask students to self-assess.

Reinforcing EffortExplicitly teach students about the importance of effort.Have students keep track of their effort and achievement.
