Building a Bigger Builder:Combining the DE Builder tools with Web 2.0 Widgets and Applications

Cool! What’s a Widget?
The web widget is a portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user without requiring additional compilation. They are derived from the idea of reusable code that has existed for years. Nowadays other terms used to describe web widgets including: gadget, badge, module, capsule, snippet, mini and flake. Web widgets oftWiken but not always use DHTML, JavaScript, or Adobe Flash.

Creating a Writing Prompt
Log into www.discoveryeducation.com
Click on the “Teacher Center” link

Click on the Writing Prompt Icon
Creating and SearchingType a keyword in the Search box to search for existing Writing Prompts, choose DE Writing Prompts, and then click on the Search button

Previewing and Copying a Writing Prompt
Click on the preview to see the Writing Prompt and copy/edit to add the Writing Prompt to your content
Creating and Searching
Click on the Create New button to create a new Writing Prompts
Create a Title, select a Subject Area, Writing Type, and Grade Level

Save to an Existing Folder or Save to a New Folder and place inside an Existing Folder

Provide your students’ the link above. The link can be embedded on blackboard and moodle pages, websites, blogs, wikkis and more…
Viewing The Results
• Go back to My Content and click on your folder/writing prompt, etc.
• Pull down the drop down menu next to your prompt
• Select Grade Book and click on the Go button
• Click on your prompt to see the date completed, status, and to view the prompt response (grade)

Slideshare.net is a free Web 2.0 application that lets you upload and search for PowerPoint presentations, share them, and embed them into the “Builders.”
