The history of the department of the orthopedics and traumatologybegan over 100 years ago. In 1903, a home for children withdisability was opened and in 1922 the department of orthopedicsstarted, which later became one of the fundamental pillars in thehungarian pediatric orthopedics.The department of orthopedics and traumatology takes part inthe Emergency care of Budapest since 1973. In 2002 theinternationally recognized Professor László Hangody was electedas the head of the department.Lately the department has been relocated to the Uzsoki MedicalCenter and in 2010 was integrated into the department of trau-matology of the Semmelweis University expanding the pioneeringresearch and education of future health care professionals.In 2011 the department of traumatology at SemmelweisUniversity received the “FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence” Awardwhich promoted our Hospital among the 25 centers recognizedfor its leadership in Football Medicine.The department of ortopedics and traumatology at Uzsoki Hospitalgives place to one of Europe’s Cartilage Repair Surgery centerswhere Professor László Hangody developed the Mosaicplastysurgery technique which enables Cartilage Lesions treatmentwith Autologous Cartilage. This unique technique has beenrecognized internationally and applied by orthopedic surgeonsgaining a reputation all around the world to Prof. Hangody and hisdepartment.The department of orthopedic traumatology is Hungary’s largestorthopedic department performing over 3000 elective orthopedicand 1500 trauma inpatient operations per year. SPORTS MEDICINEThe Department won the “FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence “ Award in 2011 for its high qualityservices in football-related injuries’ treatment. Our Medical Center has an outstandingexperience in anterior and posterior cruciate ligament knee surgeries, complex knee injuries’treatment, shoulder operations and different sport medicine surgical interventions.We would like to mention that our Department plays a key role in Arthroscopic Surgeriesof the knee, the hip, the ankle, the elbow and the wrist as on a domestic as well as on aninternational level. The number of Knee or Hip Prosthesis Replacement reaches approximatelya number of 2300 per year which are performed with minimal invasive techniques byour exceptionally experienced surgeons in operating rooms meeting high and modernstandards. Beside primary replacements the Department has gained a great experiencein revision surgeries implicating special instruments and providing a significant varietyof implants. The prosthesis implantations are cemented or cementless depending on thepatient’s age and bone condition.We carry out minor orthopedic surgeries such as Foot Deformity, Upper Extremity TunnelSyndrome usually as a one-day care intervention.

TRAUMA SURGERYThe Department provides a 24-hour Acute Trauma Surgery Care Service 365 days per yearfor the region of Budapest and its suburbs. The hospital ensures the best quality of care inmodern operating theater with high quality of image intensifiers and the most developedimplants.Since the Department has a double profile each of our doctors has a specialty in more thanone field. The Department is engaged in medical students’ education and participates in thePostgraduate Traumatology and Orthopedics Residency Program.Over the past years the physicians and physical therapists working in our Department havedelivered over 400 scientific presentations, written more than hundred scientific articles and26 book chapters representing the ward’s intensive research and innovation of work.The innovations have led to many Hungarian, German and American patents which serve aslegal protection of the Orthopedic and Trauma Surgical Instruments and Implants developedby the Department of Orhopedics Traumatology of Uzsoki Hospital.

The ophthalmology department is a highly frequenteddepartment with a vitreoretinal surgery profile. Over 2000phacoemulsification surgery, over 400 vitrectomies, and over10000 outpatient examinations are performed here annually.The main profiles of general ophthalmology include cataractsurgeries that are performed in a minimal invasivephacoemulsification technique, where the lens is replaced bya flexible intraocular lens implant manufactured by one of theworld leading companies. In accordance with the demands ofour age, beside the conventional single focus lens implants,multifocal lens implants are also available, so the patients willnot require wearing glasses after the surgery for most of theiractivities. The operations are performed with one of the mostmodern surgical instruments - the Stellaris PC combinedphacoemulsification and vitrectomy device.The vitreoretinal profile of the department includes thetreatment of a wide variety of retina and vitreous diseases.The Stellaris PC device allows small incision suture and lesssurgical techniques. Diseases of the fundus are treated with theaid of modern laser devices besides the currently used surgicalmaterials, dyes and artificial vitreous humor.The outpatient clinic is well equipped with instruments anddevices to determine the proper diagnosis and to documentthe therapeutic results of the ultrasound, the automated visioninspection machine, the fundus camera and the fluoresceinangiography, as well as the optical coherent tomography. Fortreatment of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye,fundus and Neodymium YAG laser devices are available.

ONCORADIOLOGYThe Department Oncoradiology (also known asDepartment of Radiation Therapy) annually providescare for more than 3000 new patients with cancer. TheUnit is a comprehensive center, providing radiationand chemotherapy for all solid tumors along with thetreatment of patients suffering from hematologic andpediatric cancer.Since 1978 the center provides radiation andchemotherapy simultaneously, known as chemo-radiotherapy. The effectiveness of this combined method

significantly outperforms radiotherapy alone in casesof cervical cancer, cancer of the urinary bladder, and inhead/neck tumor, etc.The Department has undergone a significant developmentand a renewal of its instruments and equipment. Withthe help of European Union funds, a Clinac iX Dual EnergyLinear Accelerator has been installed, maintaining themost modern irradiation techniques (intensity modulatedirradiation, Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy: IMRT,fluoroscopic irradiation and Image Guided Radiotherapy:

IGRT). The ward is also equipped with a new UniquePower electron accelerator, a Toshiba CT simulator anda GammaMed after loading device, while a telecobaltmachine and a Clinac 2100C linear accelerator are beingrenewed. The five irradiation units and the CT simulator arecoordinated with an Eclipse treatment planning system.The renewed Department of Oncoradiology meets thehighest professional international requirements.

GENERAL SURGERY AND SURGICAL ONCOLOGYThe Department excels in liver-biliary tract surgeries,pancreas, colorectal and breast surgeries. Central rolesof the Unit include providing care for patients withcancer diagnosis, performing minimal invasive surgicaltechniques and plastic surgery. The progressive careof patients with liver cancer is aided with the help ofa telemedicine system accessible from the hospital’swebsite.

PROFILESTumor surgery: Liver, biliary tract, intestinal, rectal,esophagus and stomach tumors; pancreas andendocrine tumors; special rare malignant tumors;breast cancer; skin cancer; soft tissue tumors.

NEUROLOGY

EAR, NOSE, AND THROAT/HEADAND NECK SURGERYThe Department is a renowned centre of excellence in Hungary and is well equipped according toEuropean standards, involving oncologic ENT, phoniatric and allergy outpatient care. Audiologyis capable of examining all types of Hearing and Balance Disorders.Within Hungary our Department was among the first to apply laser treatment in LaryngealDiseases along with minimal invasive endoscopic nose operations in Nose Polyps and in casesof chronic Sinus Inflammations.Since 1978, the leading profile of the Department involves Head and Neck Tumors’ treatment;Organ salvage operations in tumors of the Larynx and Pharynx; application and developmentof new surgical techniques; reconstructive plastic surgery following oral and pharyngealcancer surgery. In addition, the Department performs percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomyoperations for the postoperative nutrition of patients side by side with voice rehabilitation viavoice prostheses after total Laryngectomy.

The Neurology Department’s profile includes the examination of the central and peripheralNervous System as psychological functions as well.The most important tasks of the Unit are the early detection, diagnosis and complex treatmentof vascular brain lesions and stroke. For years now, modern procedures, such as intravenousThrombolysis are performed in the Hospital. Special attention is paid to oncologic and acutepain associated diseases.The Department is also committed to provide care, medication and rehabilitation forpatients suffering from chronic Neurological syndromes. Diseases such as Sclerosis Multiplex,Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy and Polyneuropathy are also conducted by the physicians. TheHospital is supplied with the most modern devices such as EMG, ENG, EEG, evoked response,Doppler ultrasound.For a high quality care of patients we employ a physical therapist and a psychologist.

OBSTETRICS-GYNECOLOGY

The OBGYN Department at Uzsoki hospital is one ofthe largest obstetrics-gynecology Departments inBudapest. The Department provides care for patientswith highly qualified specialists and the most moderninstruments available.The obstetric task of the Department is performed inthe presence of a neonatologist specialist, ensuringthe proper care of the newborn. Childbirths areconducted on beds that can be modified to a sittingposition. Alternative childbirth methods are also available

such as tubs, subaqueous labor, wall bars, and specialinflatable balls. The designs of the delivery rooms areintimate and have a homely environment, allowing thepresence of family members during the labor and birth.Observation during the childbirth is performed underCTG surveillance, an anesthesiologist provides epiduralanesthesia if requested. If necessary, Caesarian sectioncan be performed in an operating room in the immediatevicinity of the delivery room. The Neonatal unit isequipped with incubators and blue light therapy,

where infants born after 36 weeks of gestation can beaccommodated.The gynecological surgical tasks of the Departmentare outstandingly performed by two internationallyacclaimed senior oncosurgeons, who excel in theoncologic surgical treatment of gynecology tumors.Beside the conventional gynecologic procedures, theratio of trans-abdominal endoscopic procedures areon the increase, shortening the hospital stay among itsseveral other advantages.

PULMONOLOGY

UROLOGY

Fifty percent of the patients treated here suffer from lung cancer, while the other half of thepatients suffer from chronic pulmonary diseases, COPD, asthma, pneumonia, pulmonaryembolism and fibrosis. The Department includes the following outpatient clinics: pulmonaryfunction testing clinic, allergy clinic, and interventional bronchoscopy.Outpatient examinations, such as spirometry, prick testing, nonspecific inhalation provocationtesting, arterial blood gas (ABG), whole body plethysmography and diffusion capacity testingare performed.Beside conventional chest x-rays and ultrasound, CT and isotope examinations can beperformed within the hospital. The Department performs a large number of bronchoscopies,where cytology and histology samples as well as transbronchial biopsies can be obtained. TheDepartment provides endobronchial palliative irradiation regularly in addition to performingafter-loading treatment of tumorous airway stenosis.The staff of the Department holds special clinical expertise in oncology, allergology and clinicalimmunology.

The Department includes profiles such as kidney stone surgeries,genitalia operations, endoscopic procedures of the urogenital tract,endoscopic and open prostate operations performed in a highlyequipped operation theater. In addition, the Department operates anurodynamic laboratory and lithotripsy device.

INTERNAL MEDICINECardiologyWithin the Cardiology Department there is an ICCU –Intensive Coronary Care Unit - where we deal with ahigh quality of all levels of non-invasive cardiologytreatments.The Department treats all sort of Acute Cardiologicconditions like STEMI, NSTEMI, ACS, Aorta syndromes,acute heart failure, life-threatening arrhythmias,acute Pericarditis and Endocarditis, TE cardio version.Temporary pacemaker implantations are alsoperformed.The Uzsoki Hospital is in capacity of treating fullspectrum of cardiologic diseases; carrying out status

surveys and high cardiovascular riskassessments additionally to preoperativeexaminations and cardiologic operativepreparations. The Department pays specialattention to the progressive early detectionof cardiovascular complications in patientsdiagnosed with cancer and their early treatmentand rehabilitation. UROLOGY

Endocrinology and GastroenterologyThe profile of the Department includes Metabolism,Endocrinology and Gastroenterology. The Hospitalprovides care for 2200-2300 inpatients annually. Thestaff performs Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy and ERCPprocedure. Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy ispart of the daily routine in our medical center.The Department is accredited for Internal Medicine,Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and also specializedin the field of Diabetes.

Kidney DiseasesExamination, Care and Management of all sort of kidneydisease create a exceptional profile for the Departmentwith availability of Hemodialysis for patients with aRenal Failure. Our Physicians in the Unit are specialized inInternal Medicine and Nephrology.The doctors in the Department are highly qualifiedand significantly experienced in the investigation ofPrimary and Secondary Glomerulonephritis; Auto-immune Diseases in Immunosuppressive Therapy;

in the care of patients suffering from Chronic RenalFailure and undergoing of Hemodialysis; in theexamination of patients waiting for a liver/kidneytransplantation; Invasive Nephrology techniques.Alongside the regular treatment of patients with Chronic Renal Failure the Hemodialysis Unit simultaneously carries out acute so-called “guestdialysis”. REHABILITATIONIn one of the department’s two sections, patients’ rehabilitation following trauma and orthopedic surgeries is carried out in cooperation with the Orthopedic- Traumatology department, including regular wound treatment and physical therapy. Orthopedic Specialists give instructions via walking aids and they monitor the progression.The profile of the department includes: Musculoskeletaland Rheumatologic treatment for patients withDegenerative Arthritis; Rehabilitation of patientssuffering from vascular diseases or following a stroke;Wound cure for amputees; Fitting of orthotics/

prosthetics for amputees; Chronic care.The second main profile of the Department hoststhe rehabilitation of patients suffering from medical,cardiologic and musculoskeletal diseases (mostly dueto post-operative Orthopedic and Trauma surgery;amputation; stroke; impairment caused by a neurologicalor rheumatologic disease).Our doctors have specialties in the field of InternalMedicine, Rehabilitation, Geriatrics and Physiotherapy.Therapies conducted within the Department involveteamwork of Physical Therapists, Masseurs, Speech

Therapists and Psychologists.Beside individual and group physical therapy, ourdepartment also proposes a wide range of Electrotherapyand Balneo-therapy (mineral water spa therapy) inour Physiotherapy Unit.Széchenyi mineral water is available within our buildingused for Subaquatic Physical Therapy, TangentorHydrotherapy and Aqueous Electrotherapy. Magneticstimulation, massage (Swedish, Lymphatic and deeptissue massage) as well as Light Therapies (Bioptronlamp, Sollux lamp and laser) are offered.

RADIOLOGY PATHOLOGY

The Department’s profile offers general medical and emergency x-rays; ultrasounddiagnostics; angiography and vascular interventions including angioplasty and stentimplantation. Moreover the angiography laboratory provides trans-arterial chemotherapyto patients.The newly acquired 64-slice CT with a significantly lower dose of radiation is able to makespecific examinations of the abdomen; of oncology diagnostics; of trauma patients; ofneurologic and special gastroenterological examinations.One of the turning points of oncology examinations is to gather a tumor cell or a samplefrom the patient via ultrasound or CT guided sampling.The Department has been a breast cancer detection center for over a decade andprovides regular mammography.

The main tasks of the Department of Pathology at Uzsoki Hospital andother contracted institutions are to perform necessary Histopathology,Cytology and Pathology examinations.The profile of this Unit covers all aspects of surgical pathology except forNeurosurgery, Pediatric surgery and Thoracic surgery. The Departmentmainly executes histopathology and cytology examinations, according tohigh clinical-pathologic standards.Annually 1800 aspiration cytology examinations are performed in theHospital, not only for the primary diagnosis, but also for the follow-upof patients diagnosed with cancer. Most of the tests are ultrasound orCT guided. Besides the conventional processing of material, automateddiagnostic instruments are also applied, such as immunohisto-chemistryand immunocyto-chemistry techniques. Frozen section biopsy examinationsare also carried out where the results are provided to the operating surgeonwithin only 15-20 minutes, determining the outcome of the surgery.

NUCLEARMEDICINE

Furthermore, diagnostic testing and several differenttypes of isotope therapies are also available. Since 1995,the Department has administered isotope therapy asa method of pain management in bone metastases.Since 2000, isotope treatment has been provided for

benign Thyroid Lesions, and since 2002, intraarticularradiosynovectomy has been carried out togetherwith the cooperation of the orthopedic-traumatologydepartment. In 2011 the Uzsoki Hospital received thetitle of the European Clinical Accreditation, becoming

the only hospital in Hungary to obtain this certification.The high quality diagnostic activity of the Department issupported by the most modern instruments: 3 SPECTcameras – one of them applied in heart diagnostics,another one in thyroid testing.

The Department performs the mostcommon types of Isotope Diagnostic

tests which help to detect bonemetastases and bone changes following

orthopedic operations using bone Scintigraphy –3 phases SPECT. The Uzsoki Hospital is also involved in researches; one of

the common procedures is to load myocardial perfusion Scintigraphy whichruns tests in left ventricle perfusion disorders of the heart. In addition, perfusion

scintigraphy is optimal for detecting disorders of the kidneys, thyroid gland, and inneuroendocrine tumors, etc. Diagnostics of sentinel lymph nodes are a daily routine in

the preoperative staging of breast cancer, melanoma malignum and prostate tumors.

يشمل موجز نشاطات القسم لقسم التمثيل الغذائي، أمراض الغدد الصماء واجلهاز الهضمي. ويقدم املستشفى الرعاية للمرضى الداخليني

ويرتاوح عددهم 2200-2300 سنويا. ينفذ موظفوا تنظري اجلهاز الهضمي، تنظري القولون وإجراء تنظري تنكس البنكرياس. التشخيص والتنظري العالجي

اإلشعاعي( يقدم القسم سنويا الرعاية ألكرث من 3000 مريض جديد مصابني بالسرطان. والقسم عبارة عن مركز شامل، للعالج اإلشعاعي والكيماوي

لألورام الصلبة إىل جانب معاجلة املرضى الذين يعانون من إضطرابات سرطان أولية تصيب الدم واألطفال . ومنذ عام 1978 والقسم يوفر العالج

اإلشعاعي والكيماوي يف آن معا، واملعروفة بالعالج الكيماوي اإلشعاعي . وفعاليتها تتفوق إىل حد كبري على املعاجلة اإلشعاعية وحدها يف حاالت
