English Persuasive Letters

Monday – What is a persuasive letter? When writing to persuade, try to convince the reader to agree with your viewpoint. Persuasive writing in non-fiction can be in the form of a speech, a letter, an advert or even a magazine article. Explore the persuasive writing PowerPoint (on our class page) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD9arWXIddM that further explains this. Part 1 - Revisit There’s a Rang-Tan in my bedroom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ha6xUVqezQ&t=4s We are now going to watch this from a different perspective. What’s happening to the rainforest? Why do you think this is? This week we are going to write persuasive letters to companies that use palm oil, to stop deforestation and help the engendered orangutan. As we are writing to companies (should you choose to do so) presenting our ideas to a high standard is really important. However, what is palm oil? Where does it come from? What products is it used in? Explore the following links to find out more: https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/challenges/palm-oil/ https://youtu.be/omJ-raz3BkA

Wednesday 17th October 2018

Dear Mr Kane, It goes without saying that you are at the peak of your football career. Surely you must want to support the next generation of football heroes to become the stars of football’s future? That’s why I’m writing to ask if you would pay a visit to my school and coach our team: The Wilton Wildcats. Undoubtedly, your great leadership skills led England to success in many World Cup matches in 2018. The Wilton Wildcats require skilled and experienced leadership to achieve our potential. Only someone with your expertise would be able to steer our team to victory, wouldn’t you agree? The Wilton Wildcats’ track record has taken some unjustified hits over the past few seasons. Despite the huge effort of the team, goals are simply not being scored. With your irrefutable reputation and skills as a superstar striker, you are the missing piece of the puzzle that The Wilton Wildcats need to improve their game. Could you generously provide just one coaching session to open up years of footballing opportunities? Ultimately, the future success of The Wilton Wildcats lies in your hands. With just one visit from you, morale can be boosted, skills can be learnt and league victory could be achieved. Yours sincerely,

Georgia Russell (The Wilton Wildcats Captain)

27th April 2012 Dear Miss Green, It has come to my attention that the council are planning on closing my local swimming pool. I am extremely concerned about this.

I have been a member of your community and have swam in this swimming pool twice a week for the last 20 years. I have set up three swimming clubs and regularly teach lessons at your pool, so as you can see I have brought a lot of business and money to this pool! Swimming is the best form of exercise for many people, especially the elderly. It is the only time that people are able to move freely without restriction. A true relief, wouldn't you agree? If you continue with your plan to close our swimming pool then the nearest pool is over 50 miles away, how on earth are these people going to be able to travel the distance? I completely disagree with this closure and I recommend that a public consultation be held so that you can hear the voice of our faithful community. Yours sincerely, Mr T Harvey Dear Prime Minister, The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. However, at the rate it is currently being cut down, this will not last much longer. Deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest affects all living things on Earth and unless it is stopped or limited, there will be serious consequences in the future. Firstly, deforestation causes devastating loss to animal and plant life. Cutting down the enormous Amazon trees means that animal habitats are destroyed and plants are crushed. This is leading to many animals becoming endangered and extinct – each year, many animal and plant species are becoming extinct. Can you really imagine a world without certain species of animals? Secondly, deforestation is causing climate change and global warming to worsen. The Amazon rainforest is described as the lungs of the Earth, but if we are cutting down these lungs, they won’t be able to breathe in many of the harmful gases that cause climate change and global warming. Surely someone as smart as you knows that if we carry on cutting down trees, that the Earth will become a place where no life will be able to survive! Finally, deforestation is cutting the supply of oxygen to all living things. The Amazon rainforest is responsible for 20% of all oxygen produced on Earth. We are carelessly killing the Amazon and at the

same time, killing ourselves! Deforestation means there are fewer trees available to absorb carbon dioxide and release vital oxygen needed for all living things to stay alive. It is like we are slowly suffocating ourselves and nobody cares! You must do something to prevent the changes that have already started because of deforestation. Animals are becoming endangered and extinct, climate change and global warming is getting worse and the amount of oxygen on Earth is decreasing. If these aren’t reasons to act now, then the future of mankind and all living things is in great danger. I hope you read this letter and start to make changes, Yours sincerely Miss Blackborrow Tuesday – Practise to persuade! Look at the discussion flashcards (on our class page). Discuss these with someone in your family. Do you agree or disagree, why/why not? Remember to justify your ideas using ‘I think that … because …’ Part 2 – Now we are going to think about why palm oil and deforestation is having a negative impact on orangutans for example, destroying their homes. Use information from comprehension tasks that you have completed, the deforestation PowerPoint and resources to support your ideas (on our class page). You may wish to use the planning template below to plan your ideas for your letter. Use phrases that you used when trying to persuade earlier. For example, I think that … because… Not only … but ….

To whom it may concern, My name is Jess. I am writing because I recently watched a TV advert called ‘There’s a Rang-Tan in my bedroom’ if you haven’t seen it I would highly recommend watching it. It inspired me to find out more about deforestation and I was shocked and appalled by what I found out and so felt compelled to write this letter. Despite numerous reports and campaigns deforestation is still increasing. In countries like Indonesia the amount of rainforest being destroyed is the size of Germany. Currently 25 orangutans die everyday because of it. That’s nearly 10,000 a year! I find this despicable and disappointing. The leading cause of deforestation is to produce palm oil. According to Greenpeace your company was identified as having links to suppliers that use dirty palm oil. That’s palm oil made due

to deforestation. You may remember that 10 years ago, alongside other companies, you made a promise to be clean of links to deforestation by 2020. That’s now! The reason for writing this letter was to provide the polite reminder of the promise you made. I would really appreciate a reply with your stance on this issue. I, like many other people like your brand and products. However, it would be a shame if your promise was not fulfilled. I don’t think that I could like a company that is contributing to the extinction of this beautiful, majestic and defenceless creature. I am sure you would agree? Would you want to be the company that is responsible for the extinction of the amazing orangutan? Please stop cutting down the trees and help save our precious wildlife. Yours sincerely, Jess Jones Thursday – Conclusion and edit Today we are now going to finish our letter by concluding what we are saying. What action do you want the company that you are writing to take? Use the examples of how the letters have been concluded to guide you. Remember to end your letter with yours sincerely. Friday – It would be great to be able to send your letters to companies that use palm oil. Please let me know if you would not like your letter to be sent. You could use Purple Mash or Word to type your letter and send it to me. Alternatively you could hand write it.
