Böttcher solutions for UV-applications in sheetfed offsetSales of UV-curable ink systems in offset printing have

risen at an above-average rate in recent years.

Although UV curing played a somewhat lesser role in

traditional sheetfed offset for many years, the

development of new ink systems with different

sensitivities and special photoinitiators introduced

a new dynamic to the process.

The specially sensitized inks enable curing with lower UV

emitter output. That reduces investment, maintenance,

and energy costs. In addition, more sensitive substrates can be printed thanks to reduced heat build-up as com-

pared to standard UV. Within the last years more and more printers switched from conventional inks to the new UV

technologies.

What does this mean with regard to printing rollers and printing chemicals?

Printing rollers

In principle, the new, specially sensitized inks

can be printed with the same rollers as those

used with classical UV inks. The proven EPDM

compounds 726 40, 715 25, and 720 30 are sui-

table for use in exclusive UV / H-UV operations,

UV metal printing, and foil or film printing. The

new series comprising compounds 135 25, 277

30, and 377 38 were developed specifically for

the usage with aggressive inks and washes.

These compounds are composed like mixed mode compounds but they are also suitable for exclusive UV opera-

tions in which the use of EPDM rollers is not possible in combination with the other printing chemicals used in these

applications.

The use of washes containing aromatic substances also poses no problems in contact with these compounds. Thus

this new series of compounds represents valuable alternative for all manufacturers and press types for applications

in which extremely swell-inducing UV plastic inks or aggressive washes are used.

While the most extensive experience in use with damping metering rollers has been gained with compound 147 25,

ProAqualis 128 25 and – in straight UV operations – 715 25 have performed very well for numerous customers. In

the case of Komori and Ryobi presses, it is also possible to cover the damping metering roller with our ultra-smooth

compound 135 25, which is also used for damping form rollers.

Washes

The same principles that apply to rollers also apply to washes. The new UV inks can also be dissolved and removed

with standard UV washes. Böttcher offers a number of different UV washes formulated specifically to ensure com-

patibility with a wide range of applications and press types.

Our mixed mode compounds 471 38, 171 25,

and 375 38 remain as suitable as ever for stan-

dard mixed-mode printing applications.

We recommend compound 715 25 for dam-

ping form rollers in straight UV operations and

134 25 in mixed mode applications. In combi-

nation with our H-UV inking roller compounds

277 30 or 377 38, we recommend our new

compound 135 25 for the position of dam-

pening form roller.

We have especially positive experience with the new Böttcherin Offset UV-XL in LE-UV and LED-UV applications.

Böttcherin UV Chameleon offers especially rapid ink dissolution in UV operations and is also suitable for use with

conventional inks.

Fountain solutions

Most fountain solutions used in conventional offset are also suitable for use in

UV printing. Particularly good results are achieved with VitaFount Gold, S3007, and S3007K.

Special cleaning agents

BöttcherPro Cleanfix-UV is a cleaning paste for rapid ink changes and basic roller cleaning designed specifically for

use with UV inks. Böttcherin EG-UV is also available for manual special cleaning and blanket cleaning applications.

It also removes dried ink effectively. We recommend BöttcherPro Rol-O-Gel for dry-run protection. This product is

suitable for use with all roller compounds.

Printing blankets

We recommend the straight EPDM blankets BöttcherTop 4800 and BöttcherTop 8800 for straight UV printing and

LED-UV printing applications as well as ultra-sensitive inks. BöttcherTop 4400, 6600, 8200, and 8600 have also de-

monstrated good performance in mixed-mode printing.

Coating plates

BöttcherTop 1001 is currently the best-selling coating plate for UV applications. Coating plates 1002, 1003, 1006,

1007, and 1009 are also generally suitable for use with UV varnishes.
