Calculator selection – Important notesWhat Calculators are allowed in Unit 3 and 4 exams?

The VCAA dictates what calculators are allowed in exams. BSSC advice about calculators reflects this.

Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics both have one calculator free exam (Exam 1) and one that allows the use of calculators (Exam 2). An approved CAS calculator may be used in Exam 2 only. BSSC internal assessments (SAC tasks) are developed to include calculator free and calculator active components.

For Further Mathematics a CAS calculator may be used in both Exam 1 and Exam 2. A standard scientific calculator may also be used in all three subjects in calculator active exams.

What models can I use in class? All calculators must be CAS models. Currently we support the use of all TI Nspire CAS models. All models have CAS printed on the front face of the calculator. They Are:

• The TI Nspire CX CAS. Available secondhand for $80-$130• The TI Nspire CX CAS II (new model in 2020). Available new for $210 on the BSSC book list or from Officeworks

Pictures shown are in order of those listed above (but colours vary from those in circulation)

Can I use a secondhand calculator? Any of the models listed above can be purchased secondhand and used at BSSC. BSSC does not participate in the secondhand market but families are welcome to source these calculators individually through past BSSC, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Gumtree and other avenues.

Can I use a Casio Classpad CAS calculator? Many students who transfer to our College from other schools already own a Casio Classpad CAS calculator. It is OK for these students to continue using this calculator. However, whilst many of our staff have some knowledge of their operation, this cannot be guaranteed and students may need to be independent users who can learn new functionality from guidebooks or notes in the textbook. These calculators are NOT recommended for students buying a calculator for the first time.

Textbook selection – Important notes

The textbooks currently used in Mathematics at BSSC are from the Cambridge Essential Maths Series. You will need to have access to a book (hard copy and/or eBook) AND the online package (commonly known as HOTmaths).

Buying new: On the booklist there is an option to purchase an eBook only or a hard copy which includes an eBook, both of these include the online package. If you purchase this (approximately $70 for eBook only or $85 for hard copy and eBook) you are ready to go.

Secondhand books: You may choose to buy a secondhand eBook or hard copy book, however this DOES NOT include the online package. You must pay an additional fee to renew the online package electronic license (through the booklist or via credit card directly to the publisher). The costs for these are $20-$30 for a second hand book/eBook plus an additional $19.95 to renew the online package license ($40-$50 total).
