    THE UNIVERSITY OF LJUBLJANA

    The University of Ljubljana is a medium-sized higher education and scientificinstitution of the Republic of Slovenia. It is among the larger universities inEurope going by the number of students and it represents a medium-sizededucational institution in terms of the number of employees.

    The university was founded in 1919 on the basis of centuries of educationaltradition and it remained the only Slovenian university for half a century.Approximately 30 years ago it was joined by the University of Maribor, then bythe University of Primorska in 2003 and by the University of Nova Gorica in2006.

    It is a comprehensive university with 22 faculties, 3 arts academies and oneuniversity college. It has more than 60,000 students, 64 % of all theundergraduate and 58 % of all the postgraduate students in the Republic ofSlovenia. Each year, approximately 1,300 students from Europe and otherparts of the world are included in its study programmes and other researchactivities, most of them within the framework of the Erasmus programme.

    It executes 67.5 % of all the accredited undergraduate programmes in thecountry. It provides more than half of Slovenias bachelors degrees, more thantwo thirds of the masters degrees and specialists and almost all the doctoraldegrees.

    Based on its own research projects and on advances in research at home andabroad, the University provides instruction and training for prominent scientistsand experts, capable of leading sustainable development, with a view torespecting the legacy of European Enlightenment and Humanism as well as

    human rights. The University also promotes interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary studies.

    Achievements in the fields of science and arts are shared with otheruniversities and institutions carrying out scientific research. It thus contributesits share to the world's treasury of knowledge and also disseminates thisknowledge within the countrys borders. The University works in co-operationwith various economic institutions in both the public and private sectors, withthe government and local authorities and with other civil institutions. In thisway, it encourages the harnessing and application of its research andeducational achievements and contributes to social development.

    STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LJUBLJANAAt the University of Ljubljana, students may select from among numerous

    humanistic, artistic, natural science, technical, medical and severalinterdisciplinary study programmes. Everyone is sure to find something to suithis or her personal interests, career interests and life objectives.

    Most of the undergraduate study programmes of the University of Ljubljanahave already been modified according to the recommendations of the BolognaDeclaration.

    Through its first level higher education professional programmes, the Universityof Ljubljana offers good opportunities for all those desiring to deepen theirpractical knowledge and for those wishing to obtain employment as soon aspossible.

    The advanced first level university programmes offer students a rich foundationof knowledge, qualifying them for the most demanding work on the labourmarket.

    If, after enrolment, students find that their chosen full-time study programmedoes not suit them, they may transfer to a different full-time programme oncewithout any loss of student status. Transfers between professional highereducation programmes and more demanding university programmes are alsopossible.

    Full-Time Courses

    Undergraduate studies for most of the study programmes are performed as full-time courses in accordance with the study calendar, allowing the students fullparticipation in all their lectures, practical classes and seminars.

    Part-Time Courses

    Part-time courses are performed according to a special schedule, mostly in theafternoons and on Saturdays. All forms of pedagogic work on these coursesare executed in 30% of the hours of the full-time courses. For self-learning,students have available a quantity of specially prepared material, lecturersinstructions and tutors help.Part-time courses are also performed in separate units outside the facultyseats.

    Distance CoursesIn addition to the full-time and part-time courses, the Faculty of Economics andthe Faculty of Administration of the University of Ljubljana organise distance

    studying as a form of part-time study.

    Parallel Courses

    Parallel study in two or more programmes or at two faculties at the same timeis possible. Students may choose this type of study after completing their firstyear of study.

    STUDY CALENDAR

    The academic year at the University of Ljubljana commences on the 1stOctober and concludes on the 30th September. It is divided into twosemesters. The first (winter) semester lasts from October to mid-January, whilethe second (summer) semester lasts from mid February to the end of May orthe beginning of June.

    Winter Semester, Summer Semester, Examination Periods andHolidays

    The study calendar is organised so that study activities run from the firstMonday in October until Christmas. After an approx. ten-day holiday forChristmas and New Year, study activities continue until January. The first

    (winter) examination period runs for three to four weeks from mid-January tomid-February.

    Lectures continue from mid-February to the end of May. There are a number ofdays off in this semester for the Easter holidays and about one week for MayDay. The second (summer) examination period starts at the beginning of June,lasting four weeks until the end of June.

    THE LANGUAGE OF THE TUITIONAll courses are performed in Slovenian. More and more frequently, faculties

    offer consultations to foreign students in English. All foreign students must passan intermediate level examination that will test their knowledge of Slovenianprior to enrolment in the second year. At the University of Ljubljana, the Centrefor Slovene organises and executes several forms of study of the Slovenianlanguage as a second/foreign language.Information for candidates regarding these courses is available at the followingaddress:

    Candidates who must pass this intermediate level Slovenian examinationaccording to the Slovenian for Foreign Learners programme can enrol in aspecial 40-hour course called Preparation for the intermediate level Slovenianexam. It will be organised from 1 to 12 September 2008 at the Faculty of Arts.The course lasts four hours each day and is not intended for beginners.

    The deadline for application and preparation for the exam is 25 August 2008.The price of the course is 280. Accommodation is not provided.

    Courses and individual Slovenian lessons are organised by several languageschools across Slovenia.

    The Intermediate Level Slovenian Examination

    The intermediate level Slovenian examination is only performed by theExamination Centre of the Centre for Slovene as a second/foreign language.More information regarding the exams can be found at the following address:

    In 2008, intermediate level exams will be organised on 4 and 5 April, 14 and 16June, 12 and 14 July and on 13 and 17 September.

    Candidates take the exam over two days the written part on the first day andthe oral part the next day. Candidates must apply for the exam at least tendays before the announced exam date by filling out the application and payingfor the exam. The price of the intermediate level exam is 121.

    TUITION FEES

    Slovenians without Slovenian citizenship and foreign citizens must pay tuitionfees for full-time courses. As a rule, the tuition fee must be paid in full for oneyear of study upon enrolment at the faculty.

    The tuition fee is up to $1,500 in equivalent euros for one year of study insociological and humanist study programmes and up to $2,000 in equivalenteuros for one year of study in natural science, technical and artistic studyprogrammes.

    The following students do not have to pay any tuition fees forfull-time undergraduate courses:

    Citizens of EU Member States; Foreign citizens residing in the Republic of Slovenia who (or their

    parents/guardians) are taxable persons in the Republic of Slovenia;

    Slovenians without Slovenian citizenship who have acquired a scholarshipfrom the Government of the Republic of Slovenia or from one of theministries;

    Other foreign citizens who have acquired a scholarship from theGovernment of the Republic of Slovenia or from one of the ministries;

    Citizens of the Republic of Croatia on the basis of an internationalagreement;

    Foreign students who are exempt from paying a tuition fee or pay a reducedtuition fee on the basis of a prior individual application approved by thefaculty.

    Tuition Fees for Part-Time Undergraduate Courses

    Tuition fees for part-time courses do not differ significantly from the tuition feesfor full-time courses. All foreign citizens must pay a tuition fee. The tuition feesfor part-time courses can be paid in several instalments.

    The University of Ljubljana reserves the right to change the tuition fees (forboth full- and part-time courses) following the publication of this brochure in the

    event of amendments to the legislation regarding tuition fees for foreigncitizens.

    SCHOLARSHIPS

    The Slovene Human Resources Development and Scholarship Fund decideson granting scholarships to Slovenians from Slovenian national minorities andto Slovenians across the world. The Fund will announce a public tender wherethe conditions for receiving the scholarship and its amount will be determined.

    RESIDENCE PERMITS FOR THE REPUBLIC OFSLOVENIAResidence permits are issued in accordance with the conditions set out in EUdirectives and in the provisions of the Aliens Act (Official Gazette of theRepublic of Slovenia, No. 107/06).

    Citizens of EU Member States do not need a permit (visa or residence permit)to enter the Republic of Slovenia. For all stays in Slovenia shorter than threemonths, these citizens only need to register at the nearest police station.

    If their stay in the Republic of Slovenia will be longer than three months,citizens of EU Member States will require a residence permit. They must applyfor the permit at the Administrative Unit of the region where they will reside (forLjubljana: The Ljubljana Administrative Unit Internal Administrative Affairs

    Division, The Section for Foreigners, Toba

    na ulica 5) before the expiry of thethree-month period of permitted residence. The Administrative Unit issues acertificate to the applicant on the filing of the application for the issue of aresidence permit allowing him/her continued residence until the final decisionregarding the application.

    Citizens of the EU Member States may receive their residence permit neededto study on the basis of:

    a valid identity card or a valid passport,

    a certificate of enrolment,

    health insurance,

    sufficient means of subsistence meaning at least as much as the basic

    minimum income per month in the Republic of Slovenia (a statement by thestudent counts as sufficient proof of ensured means of subsistence).

    Residence permits are issued for a maximum of one year or for the duration ofthe study, if the study lasts more than one year.

    Foreign citizens not from any of the EU Member States coming to theRepublic of Slovenia for study, specialisation, professional improvement orpractical training purposes will be issued temporary residence permits.

    Temporary residence permits for study purposes (along with permits for firstresidence and the extension of the residence permits) are issued at therequests of the foreign citizen. They need to prove that (this applies to theRepublic of Slovenia):

    they were accepted into a study programme, for specialisation, professionalimprovement, practical training or any other form of education or that theywill participate in an international student exchange programme in anappropriate educational institutions of the Republic of Slovenia, ininternational volunteer exchange educational programmes or any otherprogrammes that are not part of the formal education system,

    they possess a valid travel document that is valid for at least three monthslonger than their intended residence in the Republic of Slovenia,

    they possess appropriate health insurance, they have sufficient means of subsistence for the duration of their residence

    in the country. This subsistence must equal or exceed the basic minimumincome per month in the Republic of Slovenia,

    they do not have a criminal record in their home country.

    Any certificates submitted to the administrative body must be originals orcertified photocopies. The certification must be performed by an official at anAdministrative Unit or a diplomatic/consular representation office. Publicdocuments issued abroad need to be certified in accordance with the Act onthe Verification of Documents in International Traffic before they can be used inthe Republic of Slovenia.

    from 12.00 to 15.00, tel.: +386 1 438-02-85, e-mail: [email protected] is harder to find suitable rooms at reasonable prices in September andOctober, so it is recommended that you rent a room or apartment a few monthsin advance.

    Rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen cost from 110 to 190 per monthwhile studios or one-bedroom flats cost around 290 per month.

    When renting a room, water, electricity and heating bills are sometimesincluded in the rent, or are divided among the persons living in the apartment.For studios and small flats you will have to add the monthly costs to the rent.Usually a deposit or an advance payment must be paid for several months.

    Candidates may specify a maximum of three different studyoptions/programmes in their application form. The order of these study

    programme options is extremely important as the candidates will be placed intothe first study programme for which they meet all the enrolment conditions orhave a sufficient number of points for programmes with limited enrolment.

    Enrolment Conditions for the First Year of Study at theUniversity of Ljubljana

    Slovenians without Slovenian citizenship and foreign citizens who havecompleted secondary education abroad can enrol for the first year of study atthe University of Ljubljana if they meet the following conditions:

    they have completed four-years of secondary school;

    they have completed the procedure for the recognition of foreignsecondary school credentials or diplomas and have received theDecision on the Recognition of Foreign Education allowing continuation oftheir education in university or higher education professional studyprogrammes;

    they have passed the artistic ability or psycho-physical capacity testrequiredto enrol in study programmes requiring these tests;

    they have a knowledge of Slovenian. In order to enrol on studyprogrammes of the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television(AGRFT), on the Journalism programme at the Faculty of Social Studies(FDV) and on the Slovene Language and Literature programme at theFaculty of Arts (FF), the candidates must pass the Slovenian language exambefore enrolling for the first year of study. All other study programmes at theUniversity of Ljubljana require the candidates to pass the Slovenianlanguage exam before enrolling for the second year of study.

    IMPORTANT!

    Candidates may submit only one application.

    All candidates desiring to enrol in study programmes requiring tests ofartistic ability or psycho-physical capacity must send in the applicationform by 8 March.

    Late applications will not be considered in the application andadmission procedure.

    Candidates submitting applications in electronic form should not send inadditional written applications.

    Candidates with their place of residence abroad and who do not have

    temporary residence in Slovenia, must authorise a person in Sloveniato participate in the application and admission procedure for enrolment intothe first year of study if they themselves cannot participate.

    Evidence of the Fulfilment of the Enrolment Conditions

    A certified final certificate of a four-year secondary school. This may be a

    matura certificate, a vocational matura certificate, a final examinationcertificate, secondary school diploma or an International Baccalaureate (IB).

    Certified transcripts of the last two years of secondary school completed,recording the general academic performance for the individual years.

    A decision on the recognition of foreign education for the purpose ofcontinued studies or a decision on nostrification. The procedure forrecognition of the education of foreign secondary school certificates forcontinued studies at the University of Ljubljana should be performed by anauthorised person.

    An identification document. Acceptable identification documents includecertified copies of birth certificates, passports, identity cards or certificates of

    citizenship. A certificate indicating that the candidate has passed the Examination in

    Intermediate Level Slovenian issued by the Centre for Slovenian as aSecond/Foreign Language at the University of Ljubljana.

    Tests of Artistic Ability and Psycho-Physical Capacity

    These tests are a general enrolment condition and must be passed in order toenrol on the following: The Academy of Music, The Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, The Academy of Fine Arts, The Biotechnical Faculty the Landscape Architecture study programme, The Faculty of Architecture, The Faculty of Sports, The Faculty of Arts the Musicology study programme, The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering the Forming Textile

    Fabrics and Clothing programme, The Faculty of Education the Art Pedagogy and the Preschool Education

    study programmes.

    IMPORTANT!

    All foreign certificates (except bilingual ones) must be translated intoSlovenian by a court translator. Candidates should not send anyoriginalcertificates, only certified copies.

    Candidates who completed their primary or secondary education in

    Slovenia, or completed a bilingual secondary school, do not have to takethe Slovenian language exam.

    Tests for the second application period will only be performed for studyprogrammes with available enrolment places.

    The Selection Procedure and the Admission of Candidates

    If the number of applications for a study programme is greater than the numberof enrolment places, the candidates shall be selected according to selectioncriteria determined separately for each study programme.

    As a rule, the academic performance in the final certificate of a secondaryschool, the general academic performance over the last two years ofsecondary school and the results of the artistic ability or the psycho-physicalcapacity test (if this is a requirement of the chosen study programme) are alltaken into account in the selection criteria.

    All applying candidates will receive a written decision on the result of theselection procedure from the Visokoolska prijavno-informacijska slubaUniverze v Ljubljani (The Higher Education Application and Information Serviceof the University of Ljubljana). This decision will contain data on the candidatesenrolment into the desired study programme, the number of points gatheredand legal instructions.

    Foreign Citizens from Any of the EU Member States WhoCompleted their Secondary Education Abroad

    Foreign citizens from any of the EU Member States apply for the enrolmentslots officially published in the Call for Enrolment, along with citizens of theRepublic of Slovenia.

    There are three deadlines for enrolment application: The first application (in writing or electronically) is to be submitted between 1

    February and 8 March to the Visokoolska prijavno-informacijska slubaUniverze v Ljubljani (the Higher Education Application and InformationService of the University of Ljubljana),

    The second application (in writing or electronically) is to be submittedbetween 20 and 30 August to the Higher Education Application andInformation Service of the University of Ljubljana,

    The third application (in writing) is to be submitted between 1 and 4 Octoberto a higher education institution (faculty, academy or university college).

    Candidates who have completed secondary school abroad (or will in thefuture), must attach the following certificates to their application: A certified copy of the final certificate, Certified transcripts for the last two years of completed secondary school

    showing general academic performance, A decision on the recognition of foreign education for the purpose of

    continued studies or a decision on nostrification, An identity document (certified copies of birth certificates, passports, identity

    cards or certificates of citizenship), A certificate of knowledge of the Slovenian language (if enrolling in study

    programmes of the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television(AGRFT), Journalism at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FDV) and theSlovene Language and Literature programme at the Faculty of Arts (FF)).

    The required certificates must be sent: By the first application deadline, along with the first application, or by 10

    September at the latest, By 30 August at the latest for the second application, By 4 October at the latest for the third application deadline.Candidates who send in the required certificates by 9 July will receive thedecision on the results of the first selection procedure by mail by 23 July.Theremainder will receive them after they send all required certificates.     Slovenians Without Slovenian Citizenship and Foreign Citizensnot from any of the EU Member States who Completed their

    Secondary Education AbroadThese candidates apply for enrolment slots for Slovenians without Sloveniancitizenship and for foreign citizens (of non-EU countries), published in the Callfor Enrolment on the www.vpis.uni-lj.si website (under the Tujina menu item).

    Up to 5% of the enrolment slots for full-time study are available for Slovenianswithout Slovenian citizenship and for foreign citizens, in accordance with thenumber of free enrolment slots for citizens of the Republic of Slovenia and forcitizens of EU Member States. Up to 50% of the enrolment slots are availablefor part-time study.

    Certificates on meeting the enrolment conditions:

    Candidates who have already completed secondary school abroad andalready have a decision on the recognition of foreign education or a decisionon nostrification need to submit all the necessary certificates on meeting theenrolment conditions, along with the application, by 8 March (if applying forstudy programmes requiring artistic ability and psycho-physical capacity

    tests) or by 15 August 2008 at the latest for any other study programmes. Candidates who will complete secondary school abroad in the 2007/08

    academic year must submit the certificates and any required documents by1 September 2008 at the latest.

    Required certificates for candidates who have completed secondaryschool abroad (or will have in the future): A certified copy of the final certificate of a four-year secondary school, Certified transcripts for the last two years of completed secondary school

    showing general academic performance, A decision on the recognition of foreign education for the purpose of

    continued studies or a decision on nostrification, A certified copy of an identity document (certified copies of birth certificates,

    passports, identity cards or certificates of citizenship), A certificate indicating that the candidate has passed the Examination in

    Intermediate Level Slovenian (if enrolling in the study programmes of theAcademy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT), Journalism atthe Faculty of Social Sciences (FDV) and the Slovene Language andLiterature programme at the Faculty of Arts (FF). Candidates who have

    completed primary or secondary education in Slovenia or completed abilingual secondary school do not have to participate in the Slovenianlanguage exam.

    The decision on the results of the selection procedure for enrolment intothe first year of study

    A written decision on the results of the selection procedure will be issued by 15September 2008 at the latest to all candidates who submitted a validapplication. It will be delivered to the mailing address communicated.

    Enrolment into the first year of study

    Enrolment for candidates accepted in the first application deadline lasts until30 September 2008.

    The second application deadline

    The written application, including all required certificates, is to be submittedbetween 1 and 4 October to a higher education institution with availableenrolment slots (faculty, academy or university college).

    Foreign Citizens who Completed their Secondary Education inthe Republic of Slovenia

    The procedure described under the heading Foreign Citizens from EU MemberStates who have completed secondary education abroadapplies for all foreign

    citizens from EU Member States who completed their secondary education inSlovenia. However, these candidates are not required to go through theprocedure for recognising secondary school certificates as they havecompleted a Slovenian secondary school.

    For foreign citizens from non-EU countries who completed secondary school inSlovenia, the procedure described under the heading Slovenians withoutSlovenian citizenship and foreign citizens from non-EU countries whocompleted their secondary education abroadapplies. These candidates are notrequired to go through the procedure for recognizing secondary schoolcertificates.

    Candidates who have already finishedsecondary schoolin Slovenia with a

    matura certificate from 1995 onward or a vocational matura certificate from2002 onward, and candidates who will complete secondary school inSlovenia only need to submit an identification document (certified copies ofbirth certificates, passports, identity cards or certificates of citizenship), alongwith a filled-in application form. The Higher Education Application andInformation Service will obtain the required certificate information for thesecandidates from the National Examination Centre (RIC).

    FOREIGN EDUCATION RECOGNITIONPROCEDURE FOR THE PURPOSE OFCONTINUED STUDIES

    The Procedure for Recognition of a Foreign Certificate ofSecondary Education and the Legal Framework

    The recognition procedure for a foreign certificate of secondary education is aspecial ascertainment procedure where the right of enrolment into the first yearof undergraduate study programmes in the Republic of Slovenia is judged onthe basis of the submitted certificates and the rights obtained in the country oforigin of the documents. At the same time, the treatment of the foreigneducation document in the application and admission procedure for enrolmentinto the first year of study is determined in case the desired study programmes

    have limited enrolment.They can be treated as matura certificates, final examinations prior to 1 June1995, vocational matura certificates or final examinations after 1 June 1995 inaccordance with the valid legislation of the Republic of Slovenia.

    The recognition procedure is conducted according to the Recognition andEvaluation of Education Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No.73/04) and considers all other national and international regulations, as well asmultilateral or bilateral agreements that are ratified in Slovenia, relevant for theprocedure and the decision.

    Who Must Apply for the Procedure?

    Candidates with a foreign secondary school document wishing to continue theireducation in the first year of an undergraduate study programme in Sloveniamust obtain a decision on the recognition of the right to continue theireducation in university or higher education professional study programmes inSlovenia, if they do not already possess it or if they did not obtain a decision onnostrification pursuant to the previous regulations on recognition of education inSlovenia, by 21 January 2005.

    A decision on nostrification obtained according to previous Slovenianregulations is taken into account for the application and admission procedure.

    How Long does the Procedure Take?

    The duration is a maximum two months following the day the application iscompleted. Should there be a need for further exploration of the matter, theprocedure is discontinued until the relevant information is obtained. During thisdiscontinuation, the deadline for the issue of a decision does not mature.

    We recommend that candidates with a place of residence abroad and whohave submitted an application for recognition of education for the purpose ofcontinued studies obtain an authorised person for the procedure, allowing forthe possibility that they will not be able to participate in the procedurethemselves for any reason (see the N-Application form).

    The N-Application form, instructions on filling it out and additional informationon the certificates the candidates need to submit are published on the websiteat: www.uni-lj.si/studij/priznavanje.

    Documents Required for the Procedure

    The recognition procedure begins upon the individual application for

    recognition, submitted on the prescribed form: Application for Recognition ofEducation for the Purpose of Continued Studies(hereinafter: the N-Applicationform).

    Candidates need to submit the following documents, along with the N-Application form:

    An original document on education or its identical copy or any otherdocument replacing the original document in accordance with the laws of thecountry that issued the original document, which the applicant wantsrecognised,

    A photocopy of the document(s) referred to in the preceding Indent,

    A certified Slovenian translation of the documents(s) referred to in the

    first Indent, Annual report cards, transcripts or any other certificate(s) of the content

    and duration of education,

    A short chronological description of the entire education processprepared by the applicant.

    PLEASE NOTE

    Certificates obtained in the former Yugoslavia and issued prior to June 25,1991, are recognised without the recognition procedure.

    The International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB diploma) is equivalent to thematura certificate obtained in the Republic of Slovenia according to theGimnazije Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 1/07 official consolidated text) and is recognised without the recognitionprocedure.

    The deadline for issuing the decision is within two months of receiving thecompleted application.

    For a successful transfer, foreign citizens who are candidates for continuedstudy at the University of Ljubljana must meet the conditions for enrolment intothe next year of study of the foreign universitys study programme on whichthey are enrolled. The Senate of the institution at which they want to continuetheir study will determine any eventual bridge exams, any other obligations forenrolment and the year of study into which they may enrol.

    The submitted certificates are sent by the University of Ljubljana to the highereducation institute where the candidates want to continue their studies alongwith an inquiry regarding their opinion on whether the candidates may enrol

    and which year of study they may enrol into.The decision of the higher education institute, which the candidates will receiveby mail, will state which examinations and obligations will be recognised andinto which year of study they may enrol.

    POSTGRADUATE STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITYOF LJUBLJANAThe postgraduate study (specialisation, masters or doctoral courses) is thepath to deeper knowledge in a particular, often narrowly defined area of interestto the candidate or perhaps to the company where the candidates intend towork. It is also often the route to becoming established in the academic andscientific research fields.

    In the 2005/2006 academic year, the University of Ljubljana offered enrolmentslots for new masters degree programmes of the second level for the first time,in line with the Bologna Declaration. Since then, 50 second level mastersprogrammes have been updated, along with seven common programmes andthree third level doctoral study programmes.

    Pursuant to the Higher Education Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of

    Slovenia, No. 100/2004), the Call for Enrolment for the postgraduateprogrammes is published each year by 1 June for the upcoming academicyear. This text is accessible in full on the University of Ljubljanas website:www.uni-lj.si (news or current information). These Calls for Enrolment containthe study programmes offered, information regarding the duration of thecourses, the enrolment conditions, the number of enrolment slots and themanner and location of study according to individual University memberinstitutions.

    Detailed explanations of the enrolment conditions (the relevance of previouseducation) and the tuition fees can be obtained from the higher educationinstitutions of the University of Ljubljana offering the relevant postgraduateprogramme. Applications for enrolment should be submitted to the individualinstitution by 10 September for the upcoming academic year.

    Candidates who apply in time (by 10 September) for postgraduate studyshould, following the selection procedure at the relevant member institution (orat the University for the University postgraduate programmes) should enrol forpostgraduate study by 14 October for the upcoming academic year.

    These deadlines are extremely important, especially for foreign students, forplanning all the other activities related to studying in Slovenia (e.g. obtainingconfirmation of the recognition for diplomas obtained abroad, insurance, etc.).

    The price is determined by the faculty or the university college pursuant to theprice list adopted by the University of Ljubljana Administrative Board.

    The characteristics of the specialisation courses

    Specialisation programmes are primarily intended for education in a narrowprofessional field and, with it, training to solve the most demandingprofessional tasks.

    Art specialisation programmes are intended for top art training within theframework of creativity or re-creation.

    IMPORTANT!

    Foreign students who are citizens of the European Union or of countrieswith which the Republic of Slovenia has a relevant agreement concludedare eligible for partial financing of their postgraduate study if the memberinstitution at which they are enrolled applies for financing from the Ministryof Higher Education, Science and Technology.

    Specialisation courses last one to two years, except at the Faculty ofMedicine and at the Faculty of Pharmacy, which execute specialspecialisation programmes in line with the provisions of the Health Services

    Act. Candidates who successfully complete the postgraduate specialisation study

    receive the professional title of Specialist, in line with the law and the studyprogramme.

    Masters degree study

    These are organised by several faculties and academies of the University ofLjubljana. Masters courses pursuant to the Bologna Declaration are one or twoyears long.

    Price: from $2,250 to $3,000 in equivalent euros for one year of study.

    The price is determined by the faculty or the university college pursuant to theprice list adopted by the University of Ljubljana Administrative Board.

    Enrolment conditions for masters degree coursesa) In order to be eligible for enrolment into the scientific mastersand doctoral

    courses (old programmes), candidates must successfully complete auniversity undergraduate study and meet other requirements determined bythe study programmes.

    In addition to a diploma, individual study programmes usually also require:- A high average grade in undergraduate courses or visible success in

    research or artistic work during or after the course (an award or equivalentpublic recognition for scientific or professional work, a specialisationexamination in medicine, pharmacy, etc.),

    - Knowledge of a world language;

    or:- A mentors recommendation (a university professor or equivalent scientific

    worker),- A knowledge examination (bridge examination) for candidates without

    suitable prior education or academic performance,

    - Special skills.

    b) In order to be eligible for enrolment on the Bologna professional mastersstudy programme of the second level, candidates have to successfullycomplete a first level study programme in a relevant professional field or in

    other fields if they fulfil certain obligations required by the study programmeprior to enrolment. Candidates from higher education professional studyprogrammes from relevant or other professional fields are also eligible forenrolment.

    The characteristics of masters degree courses

    The scientific masters degree study is two years long and the new professionalmasters degree study programme of the second level is one to two years long.The programmes consist of two parts.

    In the first part, students will deepen their basic theoretical knowledge andobtain additional knowledge in a narrow field of science. The programme is

    executed in a group, in the form of lectures, practical classes and seminars orin the form of individual study under the professors tutelage, if the group issmall.

    In the second part, students each produce a masters thesis in the form of aresearch assignment, under the mentors tutelage. The students then publiclydefend their theses before a commission.

    The masters thesis must be in writing, but it can also include a practicalsection. The masters thesis must be a result of the candidates independentresearch. With it, the candidates prove their knowledge of the field discussed inthe thesis and the research method.

    A single masters thesis may also be produced by several candidates together

    or by a research group, but each candidates contribution must be evident.

    Students must attach a written statement of (co)authorship to the mastersthesis.

    Those who complete the postgraduate scientific masters degree study willreceive the scientific title of Master of Science, in line with the law and thestudy programme.

    Those who finish the Bologna masters programme of the second level willreceive the title of Master in their chosen professional field.

    Doctoral Courses

    Doctoral courses are organised by faculties of the University of Ljubljana inseveral different study fields.

    Study in the previous doctoral programmes takes four years or two additionalyears after a masters degree. Study in the new doctoral programmes of thethird level takes three years.

    Price: from $2,250 to $3,000 in equivalent euros for each year of study.

    The price is determined by the University of Ljubljana Administrative Board inaccordance with the costs of realising the courses. The price list is available onthe website athttp://www.uni-lj.si/o_univerzi_v_ljubljani/univerza_v_stevilkah.aspx.

    For foreign students who are citizens of the European Union or of countrieswith which the Republic of Slovenia has a relevant agreement concluded, thesame postgraduate tuition fees apply as for students with Slovenian citizenship.

    The tuition fee for doctoral courses is usually paid in full upon enrolment.Candidates may arrange different methods of payment in cooperation with the

    organiser of the study.

    The tuition fee for doctoral courses does not include the mandatory healthinsurance. This has to be settled before the start of study.

    General requirements for enrolment on doctoral courses:

    a) - a completed masters degree course of the second level- a completed previous study programme for the obtainment of a

    university education (pre-Bologna)

    The following candidates may also enrol on the doctoral courses:- graduates of previous specialisation study programmes who completed a

    higher education professional programme must choose study obligations

    in the amount between 30 to 60 credits in order to enrol on the doctoralstudy programmes of the third level- graduates of previous Master of Science degree study programmes or

    specialisation study programmes receive at least 60 credits worth ofstudy obligations upon enrolment into the doctoral study programme ofthe third level

    b) - for pre-Bologna doctoral programmes candidates who have completeda masters study in the relevant field may advance into the doctoral studywithout producing a masters thesis if the Senate of the study organiserissues a decision to that effect (pursuant to the requirements adopted bythe Senate of the University of Ljubljana).

    The characteristics of the doctoral courses During the doctoral course (in programmes not yet harmonised with the

    Bologna Declaration guidelines), after completing a masters study, thestudents independently prepare a doctoral dissertation that includes acomplex presentation of their research. The dissertation must represent acontribution to the relevant field of science.

    Students of three-year Bologna doctoral programmes must perform 60ECTS credits worth of organised classes and publish at least one scientificarticle and prepare a doctoral dissertation as a conclusion to their

    independent research work.

    The students must publicly defend their doctoral dissertations before acommission.

    Those who successfully defend their doctoral dissertations receive thescientific title of Doctor of Science, pursuant to law and the studyprogramme.

    IMPORTANT!

    Both Calls for Enrolment on to the postgraduate study programmes for the2008/2009 study year will be published by 1 June 2008.

    Applications for enrolment into postgraduate studies will be accepted from1 June to 10 September 2008.

    Enrolment into postgraduate studies at individual higher educationinstitutions will last until 14 October 2008,at the latest.

    THE EDUCATION RECOGNITION ANDASSESSMENT PROCEDURE FOR THEPURPOSE OF CONTINUED POSTGRADUATECOURSESBefore enrolling on a postgraduate course, candidates who have finished auniversity course abroad must complete the education recognition procedurefor the purpose of continued education at higher education institutions in theRepublic of Slovenia.

    The recognition procedure begins upon the individuals application forrecognition, submitted on the prescribed form: Application for the Recognitionof Education for the Purpose of Continued Studies (hereinafter: the N-Application form).

    Candidates need to submit the following documents along with the N-Application form: An original document on education or its identical copy or any other
