DECODING TASK WORDS - MAINSTRUCTION’18

DECODING THE DIRECTIVE/TASK WORDS TO CRACK UPSC CIVIL SERVICES MAINS EXAMS:

Account for: When you are asked to explain why something significant has happened, you are expected to investigate the different factors that might have contributed to the current state of affairs. You would do well to rank the causative factors and explain logically how they contributed to the happening of the event.

Ex. Account for the success of Indian democracy right from the post-Independence period.

Analyze: This is a difficult task because the aspirant will have to consider a concept or statement, a situation or crisis, and then identify the different constituent parts it is made up of. This should be followed by a description of these parts relate to each other or are relevant to the overall theme of the crisis or event. An analytical answer would be organised well, logically constructed and objectively concluded.

Ex. Analyze the major social and economic changes that occurred because of the impact of globalization.

Assess: Here, one will have to look at how true or beneficial an idea(s) or subject(s) is. Points for and against may be written. Inclusion of opinions by experts and critics as well as your own opinions would lend your script authenticity. (Sometimes, the same approach could be taken for the task word ‘Evaluate’ also.)

Ex. Assess the arguments for and against India going for passive euthanasia.

Comment on: Here, the aspirant would be asked to state your opinion or idea on a topic or perspective. What is needed is a comprehensive explanation. Your opinion must be stated without bias, if possible.

Ex. Comment on judicial activism in India.
