AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A GRANT?

You must be able to show that you are either

deaf or hard of hearing by securing the support

of a sponsor – this must be someone who knows

you well, and who works with you

professionally, such as a lecturer, teacher, social

worker or doctor. Your sponsor should not be a

member of your family or a friend. They will be

asked to confirm that you are deaf or have a

hearing loss.

WILL I GET THE AMOUNT I APPLY FOR?

If your application is approved, the amount of

money you might receive depends on how many

other people apply and how much money is

available from the Trust fund. The decision of

the Trustees is final.

WHO RUNS THE TRUST?

A small team of volunteers (trustees), including

members from the Deaf Community, manages a

trust fund established using donations made in

Peter Greenwood’s memory. Each year, some of the

money in the fund is given out as small grants to

people who apply to the Trust for this help. The

Fund is kept going by generous donations made by

individuals and organisations.

WHAT CAN A GRANT BE USED FOR?

A grant can be used to buy books and equipment

needed for studying or training. Sometimes a grant

is offered to help with travel or accommodation

expenses related to studies or training. A grant may

sometimes be used for other purposes related to

studying so please ask!

WHO WAS PETER GREENWOOD?

Peter was Deputy Head at Thorn Park School for

Deaf Children in Bradford.

He worked hard to improve access to education for

Deaf people, particularly those about to leave

school.

Peter was an avid football fan and tragically, he lost

his life in the fire at Bradford City’s Valley Parade

football ground in May 1985 – his two sons Rupert

and Felix also died with him.

The Peter Greenwood Memorial Trust was set up in

1986 by Peter’s widow, Hazel. The trust aims to

provide financial support for people in the deaf and

hard of hearing community through small cash

grants, helping them continue their studies in

secondary, higher or further education or in training

institutions. The Trust’s area of operation is England

and Wales.
