HISTORICAL NOTE During the 1960’s and early 1970’s the house was owned by Stanislas Radziwill and his third wife, Lee, the former Caroline Lee Bouvier. He was a real estate investor who had been born a Polish prince. Lee Radziwill was Jacqueline Kennedy’s younger sister, and, as New York Times reporter Charlotte Curtis observed in 1961, was “the epitome of all that is considered chic, and therefore elegantly understated, in the world today.” President JF Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline Kennedy were regular visitors to the house during this period.
Architectural Digest recently published an article ﴾21 August 2013﴿, which describes how the property came to be featured in Vogue. Lee Radziwill called on the services of Renzo Mongiardino, the acclaimed Italian decorator and set designer, to decorate the house.
Architectural Digest states that ‘In addition to a dining room lined with Cordovan leather that was recycled from one of his movie jobs, Mongiardino’s work for the Radziwills’ London residence included a ground‐floor drawing room whose Ottoman‐meets‐Moghul atmosphere was both unmistakably hip—it was the Age of Aquarius, after all—and hypnotically sensuous.’
A year following its completion the room was photographed by Cecil Beaton. He described it as “a blaze of Turquerie,” and his photographs and commentary were published in Vogue in December 1966.
