Obituaries
Neil Anderson taught history at Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham, for over 30 years before coming to
live in Broadway in 2005. An active member of the local U3A through which he made many friends, he was
also a long time volunteer at the Sue Ryder Hospice in Leckhampton as well as being a tour leader and guide
to the World War I battlefields.
May Colley had lived in the same house in Childswickham since 1949: there she brought up her three
children – Julia, Paul and Angela – as well as living an active life in the community. For many years she
served as Head Cook at the Village School, served on the Parochial Church Council and was Church War-
den.
Loyalty to the church, and steadfastness of purpose marked her personality.

HARVEST FESTIVAL. CHILDSWICKHAM.
The generosity of Catherine Florence Jones – known as Kitty from Rev Tony Lee
Soon after I arrived in Childswickham in 1972 I realised that a car park was needed next to the church to prevent cars parking on the road side from the cross to the church gates. Mr K owned the field between the skellings and the churchyard. He agreed to sell the field to the church when he sold the skellings for Development. When the time came some years later he offered the field for two thousand pounds. This I accepted…. But where was the money ? By this time Kitty & Mary had arrived in the village. At a pcc meeting the question of getting the money was discussed. A loan was suggested, but where from? After the meeting ended Kitty stayed behind and offered a loan of the two thousand pounds. This was to be repayed by fund raising. The only condition was I should not say who had made the loan, not even to Mary. Sometime later I mentioned to Kitty that I was going to start the fund raising. Kitty’s response was “ you needn't do that– I haven't missed the interest on it —— I give it with my love” So we developed the car park and planted trees behind the hardstanding and along the field on the south boundary of the church yard. To me it was always been Kitty’s Field.

Supernatural religion gone crazy?
Much of what I write has its origins to an article by Melanie Phillips in The Times, last month.
Of 2000 people recently surveyed, 49% believed in a God: 55% believed in the supernatural.
Another TV survey found that belief in magic and superstition abounds, despite all the science and ra-tionalism on which we pride ourselves. Belief in and practice of witchcraft, astrology, parapsychology, crystal healing and New Age cults have soared in recent years. It seems that people still want to believe in something – anything – rather than a merely material explanation of life and the world. In the last century, total godlessness in the form of atheistic tyrannies – Stalinism or Maoism, in China, for example - led to barbaric horrors: and, as we so often see on TV - that has not disappeared. And when our morality becomes godless, so that it is just me who decides what is right and what is wrong – well, that is fertile ground for greed amongst the powerful, corruption in high places, and an indiffer-ence to the poverty and suffering that other people may be suffering. Nor is the Church immune: where Christians, together with their bishops and priests have lost belief in their own religious message and the high principles it inspires, we know that things go wrong there, as well. The Church ahs much to confess and put right. Yet over against this there remains plain Christian truth: certainly it, too, is rooted in the supernatural – in miracles and Resurrection, for example – yet these seem no more odd than many of the other things that people seem eagerly and willingly to embrace. What Christian faith offers is grounded in a long his-tory; in centuries of theological reflection and thought, so that it has substance and spiritual depth. It is unashamed of operating openly and ‘in the light.’ At its best, it is a source of great love and costly self giving in the service of others. It’s certainly not to be lightly dismissed. Moon Walk London 2014
On the 10th May 2014 I will be taking part in the London moon walk raising
money and awareness for vital breast cancer causes. The event is taking
place during the night, and my friends and I will be attempting to complete
the 26 mile walk around London starting at Clapham Common.
The MoonWalk London is organised by health charity Walk the Walk World-
wide, and it first started in 1998, making this the 17th moonwalk held in
London.
I am really looking forward to this challenge and all the training it involves
leading up to the event in May. It's an exciting adventure for me to be in-
volved in and any sponsorship towards this vital charity would be very much

MUSIC TO BRING STEAM TO BROADWAY!
Come and enjoy an evening of music in the Lifford Hall, to help rebuild Broadway Station. Following on from their gig in Childswickham last year, on Friday 15th March, GWR volunteer Mike Speake is taking The Rambling Boys to Broadway for an evening of musical entertainment. Once described as Nottingham's answer to The Spinners, The Rambling Boys have been singing and playing together for over forty years and have developed a wide ranging repertoire, all sung in close harmony, with great enthusiasm, and accompanied on guitar, banjo, mandolin and string bass. Their material ranges from good old sing-along songs like The Wild Rover and Leaving of Liverpool, to contemporary items like Country Roads and Early Morning Rain, through songs by John Denver, Beatles, Eagles - even some Gospel! What is guaranteed is a night of good music, plenty of humour, with lots of audience participation. Tickets will cost £7 to include tea and coffee in the interval but please feel free to bring your own drinks. There will be a raffle. All proceeds go to the station project. Childswickham WI After a very busy month with members visiting number of meetings, including the Spring Council Meeting where Mrs Sheila Dibnah ( widow of Fred) gave a very entertaining talk. We welcomed 6 visitors to the April meeting where the speaker was Dr Muriel Pilkington who spoke in great detail about The Mitford Sisters and their connection to the Cotswolds. She explained that the family can be traced back to before the Norman Conquest and originated in a small village in NE England near Morpeth, called Mitford . Some of the family moved South after the Great Fire of London to help rebuild the city, and then in 1808 John Mitford MP and Speaker of the House inherited the Batsford Estate. Batsford House was built in 1889 and that is where the 6 sisters spent much of their childhood with their brother Tom. Tom was sent away to school but the girls were educated locallyand at home and were quite a handful by all accounts! Dr Pilkington went on to talk about their marriages, political interests and friendships with well-known people in the world of fashion, politics and art. When the family sold Batsford they moved to Oxfordshire and most are buried at Swinbrook churchyard. The youngest sister, Deborah, is still alive. She is the present Duchess of Devonshire and lives at Chatsworth. A very interesting talk, absolutely packed full of facts and names! Wickhamford Gardening Club. The Club's annual Spring Show was held on 26th March and was a huge success with more entries
than ever before, with a very high standard of exhibits considering the wet winter we have had. Five new members had joined the club, which seems to be going from strength to strength and we

Broadway Showstoppers The Broadway Showstoppers enjoyed a successful debut last year, entertaining Broadway and other Cotswold villages with their unforgettable shows full of the very best songs from musical theatre, and along the way raising over £1500.00 for the group’s chosen charities, the Broadway Station Appeal and West Midlands Air Ambulance. And now a busy summer lies ahead for this group of nine singers and their band. On Saturday, 14th June they are honoured to be performing during the Broadway Arts Festival before embarking on a ‘mini tour’ of the Cotswold villages with their new 2014 show, returning to Broadway for two nights on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th July at the Lifford Hall, where they will be entertaining their audiences with songs from the shows, including Carousel, West Side Story, Chicago, Singing in the Rain, Sound of Music, Half a Sixpence to name but a few. The Coffee Morning and Gift Day held on 5 April was most enjoyable and raised £110 for Church Funds. We are grateful to the Team Rector, the Rev John Partington, for coming along to explain the current position regarding Services, which will be:
Holy Communion on first Sunday and Morning Worship on the third Sunday.
At present Aston Somerville has no Minister in charge of the Church, so all queries regarding Baptisms, Marriages, Funerals, House Visits and other matters are to be referred to the Team Rector, through St Peter’s Centre, telephone 01242 602067. The office is open every weekday morning, 9.00 and until 12 noon. The next Open Morning for discussion about the way forward will be in Church during the morning
of Saturday 12th July, time to be advised later. Please make a note of this date and join us.
We are grateful to Canon John Thompstone and Rosemary for taking our services and providing the music throughout the winter. Thank you both for filling the gap. We have been asking for quite a while now for new members for Aston Somerville Bowls Club and would really like to ask you to
make contact with us now so we can contact you nearer to April when the season starts.
You never know you might just enjoy playing the game and meeting new friends.!
It’s a misconception that the game of Bowls is just for the older generation and as the recent coverage of the World Indoor Bowls
Championship on BBC2 showed there were a number of younger male and female bowlers taking part and holding their own against
senior players who were older in years and had played the game for many years.
It’s a game that needs to attract the younger generation and I am sure in that not only in Aston Somerville but our other local villages
that there must be a number of both the older and younger generation that would be interested in learning the game?
Talking about the televised indoor bowls a number of Aston Somerville Bowls Club members and also members from other local
clubs spent a very relaxing 4 days at the event at Potters Leisure Resort, travelling by coach, on the 16 th January returning on the 20th
January. I understand the 3 meals a day, a midnight feast if they were still hungry, the occasional tipple, playing against each and
watching how the professionals do it was most enjoyable, tiring, and didn’t help the waistlines a bit!
Work has started on the Green in respect of fertilisation, re-seeding and as the weather, hopefully, begins to warm up (Ok, I know
we are still in the depths of winter and as yet no snow, but I can dream can’t I?) we will start to put in place a working party to
begin doing some work on the buildings and surrounds to make the Bowls Club and the green ready for the new season and to once
again the aim will be to receive as many plaudits from visiting teams as we did last year.
We did recruit some new members last season but we do need both male and female members to continue to grow your local club so
please consider joining us.

Poppy Appeal Organiser
A volunteer Poppy Appeal Organiser is urgently required for the Sedgeberrow Branch
of the Royal British Legion (Women’s Section). This person would not have to be a member of
the RBL but would be required to conform with the Legions procedure.
The annual national Poppy Appeal is the RBL’s principle method of obtaining desperately
needed funds with which to assist ex-service personnel and their dependants in addition or
those who are currently serving who are experiencing ill health or suffering hardship.
Such a commitment would require training by a Royal British Legion representative who
specialises in this particular project and able to provide continuous assistance.

Aston Somerville
Within, St Mary’s Church is simple and rustic: its founder c.1140 was Roger de Somerville, grandson of one of those Nor-
man knights who had come with William of Normandy and done well out of the conquest of 1066. To the village’s name
‘Aston’ was added the baronial name ‘Somerville.’ Somervilles continued as Lords of the Manor until the line became ex-
tinct in 1870 – as recorded on a plaque on the chancel wall. Of that 1140s church, all that remains are the two piers which
support the Tower where it adjoins the nave.
The wooden screen separating nave from chancel reminds us that every medieval church was divided by a Rood Screen: it
distinguished the priest’s part of the church from that of the laity: above it were the figures of Christ crucified, supported by
Mary, his mother, and John ‘the beloved disciple.’ Such screens were removed during the Reformation from the mid 1500s
onwards, and this screen is not original to this position – but from whence came it? On the outside of the South wall is a
blocked up window which was either an external doorway entrance on to the Rood, or a window that allowed light to shine
on it.
On the South wall is the outline of the former South transept: it is likely that this had been a Chantry chapel for the Somer-
ville family –with its own priest and altar – and where regular masses could be said for the souls of the family on their jour-
ney through Purgatory to the peace of Paradise. Our nearest approach to them, nowadays, apart from wall plaques and chan-
cel graves, is the Crusader knight, lying recumbent at the West end of the church and thought to be Sir John Somerville who
held the Manor from 1250 - 90. Maybe he once occupied space in the South transept before spending several centuries in the
church yard. Samuel Rudder, who visited the church in 1770, described the monument as having been “shamefully violated
by the country people who at sheep shearing have been suffered to whet their knives and shears against ‘old Somervilles’
nose.”
The chancel is full of wood work from the Box pews that would have filled the church from the 1600s to the mid 1800s
when, during the incumbency of George Head, much restoration of a ‘high church’ nature took place within the church. His
works, together with further restoration in 1904 when the pews were put in place, leave the church as we see it, today.

BROADWAY ARTS FESTIVAL 201430 MAY 31st– 14 JUNE
As part of the Broadway Arts Festival 2014, there is to be a selling exhibition of crafts by the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen in St Eadburgha's Church, Snowshill Road, Broadway. The exhibition will open on Saturday 31 May and will continue every day until Sunday 15 June. We are looking for volunteers to steward in the church, preferably but not essentially in pairs, during the course of the exhibition which will be open every day from 10am - 4 pm. The stewards' slots would be 10 – 12; 12 – 2; and 2 – 4. Their role would be to welcome visitors and to keep an eye on the exhibition. There is no entry charge so they will not be expected to handle money, except take cheques in the event of a purchase. Stewards will not be expected to unlock/lock the church at the beginning/end of each day. Leaflets about the exhibitors, their work and their contact details will be available for visitors. An updated leaflet about the church will be available, so no need to mug up about Norman pillars!

Broadway Station Open Evening
On Friday 23rd May, from 6.30 in the evening to 8.30, the volunteers rebuilding
Broadway Railway Station will hold an Open Evening. Do come along and see how
much we have achieved towards our aim of bring steam trains to Broadway. Have
a burger, buy a raffle ticket, have a beer and see the platform walls, the signal
box, the recently planted signal! You might even feel inspired to join us!
