The LumberKings are facing the Cougars on Opening Day for the fourth in franchise history. The Cougars have won two of the three Opening Day match-ups. Overall, the LumberKings trail the all-time series 161-176 and trail 60-73 since Clinton has been affiliated with the Seattle Mariners. LumberKings Starter: Nick Wells, 22, makes his season debut for the LumberKings tonight. The lefty was assigned to Clinton for his third straight season and this will be his third Opening Day with the LumberKings and the first time he will be given the ball for the curtain raiser. Wells was one of just two pitchers in 2017 to open the season in Clinton as a starting pitcher and finish the season in the starting rotation. He was acquired by the Seattle Mariners in a 2015 deadline trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. Wells was one of several young arms the Mariners received in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mark Lowe. In 43 career appearances and starts for the LumberKings, he is 7-19 with a 5.90 ERA with 155 strikeouts. Despite posting a 6.15 ERA in 2017, Wells set a new professional career high for wins in a single season with six. Cougars Starter: Mack Lemieux, 21, gets the ball for the Cougars in the season opener. The Florida native is one of 12 returners for the Cougars this season. Lemieux was assigned to Kane County on May 5 th , 2017 and finished his season Kane County. The lefty made three starts against the LumberKings in 2017 he went 0-0 throwing six innings twice and once lasting 4.2 innings. He ended his season in Kane County going 7-5 with 4.69 ERA over 19 starts. The Diamondbacks selected Lemieux in the 6 th round of the 2016 MLB draft out of Palm Beach Community College, signing him for $278,500. Prior to this start he was listed by MLB Pipeline as a Diamondbacks breakout prospect candidate. Prior to being selected by Arizona, he was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 14 th round out of Jupiter High School but did not sign. Opening Day History: The Clinton LumberKings meet the Kane County Cougars at Northwestern Medicine Field for Opening Day for the third straight season. In 2017s Opening Day, the LumberKings fell flat in a 13-3 loss. The scoring started early for Kane County who put up seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first. The only runs the LumberKings managed to tally came on one swing of the bat from Luis Liberato who slugged a three-run homer to right. Curtain Raising Recap: Kane County has enjoyed their season openers against the Clinton LumberKings. The two worst Opening Day losses in franchise history have come against the Cougars who dropped the LumberKings 13-3 in the 2017 curtain raiser, the second worst Opening Day loss. The most lopsided Opening Day loss came in Kane County in 2003 when Clinton was shutout in an 11-0 loss. Grace Period: The 2018 Minor League season opens with a litany of new rules. Among the rules unique to the Minor Leagues will be extra inning rules where teams will begin each extra inning with a runner at second base. Teams in the Midwest League will be limited to 10 mound visits a game but there will be grace period allowing player time to get accustomed to the new rule. April 20 th is the date in which umpires will be asked to enforce the 10 mound visits per game rule. Cougars manager Blake Lalli enters his first season as a coach after ending his playing in 2017 in Triple-A with the Gwinnett Braves. Lalli made three stops at the Major Leagues his first with the Chicago Cubs in 2012, the second with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2013, and lastly with the Atlanta Braves in 2016. Today’s Preview: The Clinton LumberKings (A, Mariners) open their 63rd season in the Midwest League

with the 2018 season opener against the Kane County Cougars (A, Diamondbacks). The LumberKings are

facing the Cougars on Opening Day for the fourth in franchise history. The Cougars have won two of the

three Opening Day match-ups. Overall, the LumberKings trail the all-time series 161-176 and trail 60-73

since Clinton has been affiliated with the Seattle Mariners.

LumberKings Starter: Nick Wells, 22, makes his season debut for the LumberKings tonight. The

lefty was assigned to Clinton for his third straight season and this will be his third Opening Day with

the LumberKings and the first time he will be given the ball for the curtain raiser. Wells was one of just

two pitchers in 2017 to open the season in Clinton as a starting pitcher and finish the season in the

starting rotation. He was acquired by the Seattle Mariners in a 2015 deadline trade with the Toronto
