President’s Report We had a very full programme this evening so Pres. B. kept his remarks very brief and advanced

the proceedings.

Treasurer Jim Hawkins

Not wearing his Treasurer’s hat, Jim spoke again of the need to book our place at the ROMAC

Trivia night on Friday May 13th. We will send a clipboard round next meeting so please discuss

with partners and be in a position to respond. This is a popular and entertaining evening and well

worthy of renewing our support.

Young Achiever’s Award Chairman Kevin O’Brien

Kevin advised that we now have 6 top class nominees and that members who still have a nominee

in mind should be aware that nominations close on Friday 15th April.

Sister Clubs Chairman Dick Holland

Dick advised that our Sister Club in Kasaoka, Japan will not be holding a big international

celebration for their anniversary this year, following the recent earthquake and tsunami

disasters. They do still intend to send the usual language student and are currently looking for a

suitable candidate to visit us during July and August – host families will be required as usual and

volunteers will be gratefully accepted.

Dick also advised the there will be a meeting of the Scooter Committee following our normal

meeting next week.

Frank Adorjian

Frank took the opportunity to introduce his great friends Nick and Ginnie Myhrorod from

Toronto, Canada. Nick is a Major Donor to the Rotary Foundation and was responsible for

nominating Frank to receive The Paul Harris Fellowship. Nick and Ginnie are currently on a world

cruise and made the effort to fly up from Melbourne especially to attend our meeting tonight

with Frank.

Nick spoke kindly of his friend Frank and told us what a great person he is, which we all know.

He told us something of his club of Willowdale on the outskirts of Toronto and compared their

meetings as being somewhat similar to our own.

Vicky was introduced to our club a few weeks ago and has now been accepted for induction by

our Board and Membership – we were delighted to welcome District Governor Elect Graham Jones

and Marion to our meeting tonight for Graham to be able to introduce Vicky formally to Rotary.

President Brian reads the words and pins the pin and Rotary Club of Broadbeach is delighted to

welcome it’s newest member Vicky Nicoll, who will join our Service Committee.

Guest Speaker Shelvin Kraemer

Tonight we had a guest speaker, with a profound message. Shelvin Kraemer, a young South African gave us his stirring Auto Biography centred round the serious injuries sustained in an Auto smash, and his strong will, to rehabilitate and to succeed. He declares "Fitness First". He was a fit player of South African State Rugby and played for The Bulls, until the car smash, which left him with serious brain damage and injuries to his left arm and leg, and he spent 3 months in a coma, relying on life support . Luckily he was able to achieve slow and painful success to the point where he was able to attend University, in South Africa. He studied very hard--closing out social distractions and graduated in the top 5%, with 2 degrees. He won International awards, from the University. He claims not being the most intelligent student, at the Uni., however he credits his determination --will power---and dreams to succeed as being the driving force, in his successes. He was married 7 months ago--his wife is a South African, whom he had known from school days. ON DETERMINATION---He described his efforts, while using a wheel chair for transport and exercising hard to regain the use of his legs and arms. ON GOAL SETTING----He suggests that anything as a challenge is worth working for. Work from a dream to reality. ON KEEPING MOTIVATED---Most essential---break down large challenges into smaller manageable parcels. Slow progress goes with persistence---find suitable solutions to problems. It’s better not to become discouraged, as this has to be over-come, before any progress can be made on the real problem. He ascended "Kilimanjaro". As babies struggle to walk--in time their determination and growing strength--eventually they succeed. Positivity in life--become a more likeable person. The 90/10 rule--- 90% of obstacles are as the mind perceives them to be--- 10% is the reality. The great athlete Lance Armstrong suffered from Cancer---"his will power over came the illness". One’s own attitude tends to hold one back---Raise the goals believe in it. Do not limit yourself, in life. Henry Ford said "When you think you "cannot"---you never DO" Shelvin is an energetic young man, determined to succeed over adversity. An interesting Autobiography - The Club`s thanks for the talk. scribe Ian Cowen .

Speaker Host Neil Jones presents Shelvin with our memento,

we also hope he will be able to spend more time with us and maybe join our ranks

The Broadbeach Joker An excited army recruit asked his Company Commander for immediate leave

as his wife was going to have a baby. Permission was granted, and when the leave

pass had been issued and the soldier was leaving, the officer asked exactly when

the baby was due. "About nine months after I get home sir", replied the recruit

casually.

................................

The platoon sergeant at roll call one morning asked for 20 volunteers for special

duty.

The response was not exactly terrific, but eventually he counted 20 hands.

"OK men", he told the volunteers, "Go back to your huts and take it easy".

He then scowled at the rest of the group, "You men," he said, " can fall out and

start cleaning up the parade ground"

(sounds more like a Rotary Sergeant) ................................

A woman goes into a sporting goods store to buy a rifle.

"It's for my husband," she tells the clerk.

"Did he tell you what gauge to get?" asked the clerk.

"Are you kidding?" she says. "He doesn't even know that I'm going to shoot him!"

........................... An old Australian battler lies dying in his bed. He calls over Shirley, his

faithful wife of 60 years, and says, "Shirl, when we started out, tried to buy a

business in the depression, went bust: you were with me"

"Oh, yes, Bruce", she says.

Then the war started, I joined up, and was sent to the front line, where I lost my

legs. You stayed with me."

"Oh yes, Bruce" she says.

"Then, came home, couldn't get a job, due to me disability, and bought a farm."

"Oh, yes, Bruce", she says.

"The farm flooded, then just when we got over that, there was a bushfire, and then

the drought, which wiped us right out: you still stayed with me."

"Oh yes, Bruce,"

"Now here I am, in excruciating pain, about to die, useless and you're still with

me."

"Yes Bruce."

"Shirl."

"Yes, Bruce?"

"You're nothing but bad luck!"

....................................

1. The nicest thing about the future is . . . that it always starts tomorrow.

2. Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

3. If you don't have a sense of humor, you probably don't have any sense at all.

4. Seat belts are not as confining as wheelchairs.

5. A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you're in deep water.

6. How come it takes so little time for a child who is afraid of the dark to become

a teenager who wants to stay out all night?

Page 9: Broadbeach Rotary Club Direct Access Telephone & …...He claims not being the most intelligent student, at the Uni., however he credits his determination --will power---and dreams

7. Business conventions are important . . . because they demonstrate how many

people a company can operate without.

8. Why is it that at class reunions you feel younger than everyone else looks?

9. Scratch a cat . . . and you will have a permanent job.

10. No one has more driving ambition than the teenage boy who wants to buy a car.
