Blue Cross Broad Street Run 20152
Tribute to Joe CallanFrom Race Director Jim Marino
Dear Runners,
Welcome to the 36th annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run. Once again, this race is the largest 10 mile race in the United States and we have you to thank for your continued support.
This past August, the Blue Cross Broad Street Run and the entire City of Philadelphia suffered a tremendous blow with the sudden passing of our former coworker Joe Callan.
Joe was one of the most key components of the success of the Broad Street Run and all City events that are too numerous to name. But to give you a better understanding, let me name a few: Welcome America, International Bike Race, Thanksgiving Day Parade, Live Aid, Race for the Cure, and every other parade, walk or race, regatta, festival or party on any part of the Ben Franklin Parkway or in Fairmount Park.
Joe was our go-to guy. Every City official, Police supervisor, every parade or race director, every City employee working special events, knew that when they needed a situation resolved or a question answered, Joe was the man with the solution.
I have been lucky enough to be the Race Director of this wonderful event since 1998. Joe Callan was my driver down Broad Street at the start of the race for
This year’s race is dedicated to the memory of Joe Callan, former Fairmount Park Special Events Manager and my friend.
3Race Program and Information Guide
every one of those years. During those rides, I was able to watch the maestro at work as he controlled every action the City made those entire 10 miles. He was always troubleshooting issues, whether it was the regatta, the MS Walk, or the many other events he worked on.
He was my mentor, my confidant, my most dedicated coworker and most of all my friend. Here we are eight months after his passing and I am tearing up writing this tribute. We miss him dearly and his void has been tough to fill. So much so, that I don’t know at this time how I am getting down Broad Street this year.
Please take time to remember Joe Callan, today and every day that you enjoy this wonderful City. He helped to build it for the better and his legacy will be everlasting.
Remember to hydrate, before, during and after the race. Thank the volunteers along the way and have a safe and enjoyable race. We love having you here in the City of Philadelphia.
Thank you,
Jim Marino
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Race Director Blue Cross Broad Street Run

“ Welcome to the 36th annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run! This race is the largest 10-miler in the nation; hosting more than 40,000 runners on one of the nation’s most famous streets, Broad Street. Runners and spectators enjoy the culturally diverse sights as the race begins in North Philadelphia’s Olney section, moves past Temple University’s campus and on to Fairmount, Center City, and the Avenue of the Arts, before finishing in South Philadelphia at The Navy Yard. The Blue Cross Broad Street Run features the neighborhoods and institutions that give our city character. Good Luck to all participants and enjoy your experience in the City of Philadelphia.”

RUN 411
Here are some helpful hints for every runner — from Broad Street veteran to first-timer — to help you worry less about getting around on race day.
YOU CAN’T PARK AT THE STARTThere is no parking available at the start area around Broad Street and Somerville Avenue, but there are plenty of easy ways to get there after you park at the finish or elsewhere in the city. You will find more information on where to park on page 13.
RACE DAY TRACKINGYour loved ones can follow you down Broad Street with our race day tracking. They can register at http://www.xacte.com/msg/signup.php?eid=73 and receive alerts through text, email, Facebook, or Twitter once you cross checkpoints at the 3, 5, and 7 mile markers as well as the finish line. Once you’ve crossed the finish line, you can use your Smartphone to scan the QR code on your race bib to instantly access your race results.
SHUTTLE BUS ROUTESFor our longtime runners, note that shuttle buses from the finish line to parking lots will be re-routed out of The Navy Yard to allow for easier access and traffic flow.
BROADCAST COVERAGEThis year, NBC10 and Telemundo62 will be broadcasting the entire race live.
START TIMEThis year, the race will start at 8 a.m.
USE SEPTAAvoid parking altogether and take Regional Rail into Center City and the Broad Street Line to the start area. You will find more information about using SEPTA on page 15.
PLANNING A POST-RACE GATHERING?If you’re planning a post-race gathering, please park in FDR Park or the southern end of the Wells Fargo parking lot.

RACE DAY PARKING
Driving down to the race? Below is some information so you know where to leave your car and how you can get to the start area.
PARKING FOR RUNNERSThere is no parking available at the start area. We suggest that all runners park at the Stadium Complex in the Citizens Bank Park and the Wells Fargo Center parking lots. Runners and spectators may also park at FDR Park (enter from Pattison Avenue, across from the Novacare Complex).
We urge you to arrive early to park in one of the locations suggested above and that you arrange to carpool with other runners. All lots will open no later than 5:30 a.m. and will be closed as they are filled.
RESTRICTIONSRunners and spectators must park in designated areas and are subject to parking regulations. The Philadelphia Parking Authority and the Philadelphia Police Department will enforce normal parking restrictions. Please observe all parking regulation signs and directions from the parking lot attendants.
There is no parking available at the start area, on Pattison Avenue, or inside The Navy Yard.
Parking areas are not controlled by the Blue Cross Broad Street Run and made available at the courtesy of various sports facilities. Some gates will be left closed to control traffic.
All running clubs that are planning post race gatherings are asked to refrain from using the Citizens Bank Park or Wells Fargo Center lots. Instead, please plan to arrive early to park under I-95 in the rear of FDR Park.
GETTING TO THE STARTOnce you’ve parked, you may either take a designated shuttle or take the Broad Street Subway Line to the start area. To find out how, see page 15.

Race Program and Information Guide 15
The start area is located on the grounds of the Central High School Field at Broad Street and Somerville Avenue in the Olney section of Philadelphia.
We recommend using SEPTA, who continues their support of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run by making it easy and free for runners to reach the start line on the day of the race.
BROAD STREET LINETo reach the start area, runners may ride SEPTA’s Broad Street Subway Line for free. Simply display your official race bib to the cashier at any Broad Street Line station. Runners must wear their race bibs on the front of their shirts.
Trains will run to the start area beginning at 5:30 a.m. on the morning of the race, and SEPTA will provide express trains from Pattison Avenue. It takes approximately 35 minutes to travel from the AT&T Station stop near the finish line parking areas to the Olney Transportation Center, a few blocks north of the start area.
Express trains, when operating, take about 20 minutes. You may also board a local train at any other station on the Broad Street Line. Express trains will run without stopping as soon as they become full. Center City boarding should be done at the Walnut/Locust stop. The race will start promptly at 8 a.m. under police supervision. It is in your best interest to board a train before 6 a.m. and to allow yourself time for any unfortunate delays. Schedule times may vary.
REGIONAL RAILIf you are coming from outside of the city, you may use Regional Rail services to reach the Broad Street Line. Regional Rail will be operating on a special schedule.
SHUTTLE SERVICESShuttle buses will be located at the AT&T Pavilion and take you directly to the starting line before the race. After the race, all shuttle buses from the Navy Yard will return you back to the parking lots. Please look for the designated shuttle bus stops, which will be clearly marked so that everyone may board safely.
Visit septa.org for train and subway schedules.

GEAR BUSES You can check your gear on any bus — buses will not be loaded by bib number. Look for the yellow school buses near the starting line to load your gear. At the finish, display your gear check identification wristband to the volunteers, and your items will be returned to you. Runners should place a business card or mailing label on or inside their bag to help with identifying it after the race.
LOCATING GEAR BUSES AT THE STARTAll gear check buses will be located on various streets around the start area such as Olney Avenue, Old York Road, and Somerville Avenue. No buses will be on Broad Street this year to allow more room for the corrals to be set up. Runners are asked to check their gear early so that the buses can leave on time. When the first buses are loaded they will leave for the Navy Yard. New buses will be opened after the first buses are filled. Please move quickly away from the buses after you load your gear to allow more room for the next group of runners. Please do this in an orderly fashion to help our 200 volunteers do their job.
LOCATING BUSES AT THE FINISHGear pickup at the Navy Yard will be located at the south end of the Marine Parade Grounds in the parking lot directly across Constitution Avenue.

26 Blue Cross Broad Street Run 2015
On Sunday, May 3, thousands of us will run together
down 10 miles of Broad Street, straight through
the heart of Philadelphia. But it’s more than
just a race. It represents the months, weeks, and
days you spent training, running in the cold or on
a tired, old treadmill. It represents all that you
sacrificed and all that you’ve overcome along the
way, whether it’s sore muscles, sickness, or injury.
Now it’s time to celebrate. Now it’s time to finish
what we started, and enjoy the last leg of the
challenge with our friends and family there to
cheer us on.
