BRITISH BREWERIES

The London Brewery of Truman, Hanbury & Buxton

A vapour-compression refrigeration machine designed by James Harrison (a

Scotsman living in Australia) was manufactured in London by Siebe & Company

according to his Patent BP 2362: 1858 and sold to the brewery of Truman, Hanbury

& Buxton in 1857, probably the first application of refrigeration in a British

brewery. It was reported to be still at work in 1886.

It may be that Bristol Breweries are featured because two members of the Heritage

Group (Frank Ferris and Brian Roberts) were born in Bristol and can recall both the

breweries and the beers
