From the Executive Principal
“Our students are all different and we work with each oneto maximise progress, all the while, with an eye on whatmakes for expertise. This blend is powerful.”
Our 2018 Priorities
I had the pleasure of visiting the Queensland Ballet recently. Thestudio experience was to watch Li Cunxin, Queensland Ballet’sArtistic Director and of Mao’s Last Dancer fame, in action. Hehad two of the world’s best emerging dancers, one from Cubaand one from Japan.
Li coached them through a rehearsal of Swan Lake. We saw, first hand, the expectations of excellence, the tight connectionof creativity and precision and the focus on making continuousimprovements. Li said, “I am trying to get the best out of mydancers. They are all different. I am working to get the best outof each one while maintaining the integrity of the art form.” Thisis a terrific description of what we are trying to do with students. Our students are all different and we work with each one tomaximise progress, all the while, with an eye on what makes forexpertise. This blend is powerful.
During each of the recent parent nights, I spoke about the threeschool priorities: Visible Progress, Visible Expertise and VisibleCulture.
Visible ProgressVisible Progress Visible ExpertiseVisible Expertise Visible CultureVisible Culture
I gave examples of some ways we could all work togetheron these. In the visible expertise section, I urged everyoneto read widely. The benefits of reading are clear, not only tothe improvement of English, as it is apparent that it helpsimprove all subjects, including Mathematics and Science. Thebenefits of seeing different perspectives couples with improvedvocabulary, better awareness of the purpose and structure ofwriting as well as a better grip on different types of writing, tomake for stronger learning.

Under the direction ofinternationally acclaimed conductors, the students had theopportunity to workshop and prepare challenging repertoire.
The GPS Symphony Orchestra and Massed Choir presentedCarl Orff’s Carmina Burana. This work featured a text in bothLatin and German, as well as a challenging musical score. The work requires a massed choir of sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, boys chorale and was accompanied by a symphonyorchestra that extended to having a substantial percussionsection, two pianos and celeste as part of the instrumentation.
In order to realise Orff’s work, Brisbane State High Schoolenlisted 105 members of the Junior and Senior girls vocalensembles, utilising their usual rehearsal times over the pastfive weeks to prepare the epic work. In addition, 29 State Highmembers of the GPS Symphony Orchestra and eight StateHigh male choristers engaged in pre-production rehearsals toprepare the challenging repertoire with Maestro AndrewMogrelia.
During the day of the GPS showcase, State High hosted theconcert band workshops and rehearsals. Members of the GPSConcert Band were skilfully guided through the repertoire byDr Peter Morris and supported in sectionals which were ledby specialist instrumental tutors from the GPS schools. Theday culminated in the GPS Concert Band opening formalproceedings with their performance of a contemporary work byAmerican composer James Bonney. Bonney’s concert bandpiece Chaos Theory featured the electric guitar and wasaccompanied by a light show that complemented the musicpresentation.
The event was a wonderful opportunity for students in GPSschools to collaborate and produce a high quality musicproduction in a world class venue. Special thanks to staff MrsBronwyn Postlethwaite, Ms Betty Nicholson, Mr MalcolmHume, Mr Brad Ruben, Dr Heather McWilliams, Mr Keith Sharp,Mrs Jo Cannon, Mr Alex Kucharski, Ms Jo Duffy, Mr MattHannan, Mrs Susan McGinley, Mrs Kate Retchford and theGPS Music Sub-Committee for assisting with making the eventa success.

Music/Music Extension
“The greatest scientists are artists as well. If I wasn’t aphysicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think inmusic. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in termsof music.
When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I comeclose to the conclusion that the gift of imagination hasmeant more to me than any talent for absorbing absoluteknowledge.”
Albert Einstein, one of the greatest physicists of all timeand a fine amateur pianist and violinist.
In asking three of our Year 12 Music Extension class what thebenefits are of studying Music as a subject, they said:
‘During my time at State High I have quite literally followed inmy two brothers’ footsteps with taking on Music and MusicExtension in the Senior Schooling phase. For them, music wastruly an opportunity to expand their knowledge on the verypassion which would turn into their future career. This subjectfor me and many others provides an opportunity to developcrucial life skills, and most importantly, do what we love.’
Kengo Lawson, Year 12 student (Alto Saxaphone)
‘Music is a fantastic subject that encompasses all that I lookfor in a course. There are three lessons which vary every weekwhich makes learning fun and exciting. Each lesson is differentwith musicology lessons, which help to hone our skills inexplaining and writing about musical ideas. This is typically atthe start of the week. This is followed by a practical lessonwhich helps us come out of our skin and gain confidencein performing. Moreover, this practical aspect allows us tocollaborate and to work as a team to create music. Followedby this is our composition lesson. This is a great way to finishoff the week as it allows us to be able to create and experimentwith new ideas in music.’
Sean Thompson, Year 12 student (Tenor Saxaphone)

‘Music has become a talent, a passion and hopefully in thefuture a successful career but it also is just a way I can clear myhead or sing a song in my bedroom because it’s a great song.Music is my life, the creation of my chaos and my serenity. In the curriculum music subject, we have been taught toconsciously understand how music can affect, changeperspectives and convey a message to the audience.’
