v.3.0 March 2015
The 21st Century learning goals: • Independent, creative and
resourceful learners
• Extension of learning beyond the school day
• Collaborative and active learning
• Personalisation of the curriculum
BYOD so far• We have had experience of iPads in school since 2011 and have
learned a lot from this trial
• Year 8 have had tablet devices in school on a daily basis since September and year 7 and 10 since January
• The sixth form have had the option of bringing their laptops or other devices to lessons since September
BYOD so far
Year 8 survey, Nov 2014Students: Do you think Bring Your Own Device will help with your learning?
Teachers: The Bring Your Own Device scheme will have a positive effect upon learning

As is independent learning…
The right learning tool for the job…
Low duration/complexity : web research, photo or video capture, blogging/tweeting, scanning QR codes, reading ebooks, quizzes, surveys, short presentations, simple movie editing etc.
Longer duration/complexity : word processing, programming, complex movie editing etc.
Bringing it all together : My SandStormA portal for eLearning at Sandringham
The ‘best tool for the job’
Underpinned by all staff and student access to Google Apps for Education (storage, email, collaborative documents)
Home Learning is available to parents and students online via Show My Homework
Library with Britannica, eBooks and Journals
Links to other learning platforms and tools all on one page
Why BYOD? Why Now?Use technology that students already have to reduce cost burden (Jan 2014 survey showed ~45% of Sandringham students have a tablet already.)
The main learning benefits can be achieved regardless of device type. Gives parental choice and avoids single vendor lock-in
Costs have come down (Tesco Hudl 1 is £69 and Samsung Galaxy Tab Lite can be had for £79)
Other leading schools are going down the BYOD route (e.g Parmiter’s, Dr Challoner’s, Beaumont)
The key benefit is the personalisation of learning - their device, their learning integrated into other aspects of their digital lives
What benefits have other schools found?
Encourages independent learning
Development of research skills
Collaboration
Fosters creativity
Extends the boundaries of learning beyond the confines of the classroom and the school day
Pupils leading the learning with greater opportunities for lesson flipping
Improved engagement, particularly for SEN students who may struggle with traditional media
Cost savings: less need for traditional ICT rooms and significant savings on printing, photocopying and planners
Research by Families, Kids and Youth across 41 UK schools 2011-2014
Students lead the learningA crucial factor in securing the success of the programme are the Digital Leaders
• Research apps
• Record training videos
• Operate the ‘Genius Bar’ drop in for staff
• Act as support for the teacher and learners in lessons
• Ran sessions at the 21st Century Learners conference at University of Hertfordshire in June 2014
School Lease schemeParents have option to donate to scheme to lease a tablet over 12, 24 or 36 months including full insurance, warranty, rugged case.
Although scheme may appear more expensive at first glance, high-spec case, extended warranty, zero excess insurance and credit facility could add up to £150+ if sourced separately. You own the device at the end of the lease.
No child disadvantaged. Pupil Premium will fund scheme for eligible students and school will consider requests for financial assistance from any parent who applies.
Pricing is on flyers and 21st Century learning website
Sandringham Apps ToolkitA baseline set of free apps, organised by learning task
Links to apps on both Apple and Google App Stores
FAQWe are not doing away with writing, reading and textbooks; the devices will be a resource to complement existing learning materials and pedagogy. Teacher discretion is key.
Student ‘distraction’ is a classroom management issue - additional consequences for inappropriate use and all students sign an ‘Acceptable Use Policy’
Damage or theft of devices? Option for zero excess insurance with the school scheme or purchase your own insurance if you are sourcing your own device. Actual risks are lower than perceived - there have been zero thefts so far this year and a handful of accidental breakages
FAQ 2What about safety? Internet access will only be via our filtered service at school - 3G/4G will have to be disabled.
What about young people being ‘addicted’? Research in the early adopting schools found that the novelty factor soon wore off and students accepted the device as another learning tool. Firm boundaries for use in school need to be in place at home also.
Aren’t you just loading cost onto parents? No, we have invested heavily in an upgraded WiFi in school, teacher iPads, online learning resources and training. We don’t want anybody to be disadvantaged because of cost - financial help is available on application (and not limited to those on Free School Meals)
Next steps…Decide which is the right option for
