BBC Make it Digital season: inspiring a new generation
to get creative with coding, programming and digital
technology.
Make it Digital Tour at 13 locations across the UK to
introduce families to digital creativity and coding.
BBC micro:bit for every child in Year 7 (and
equivalent) in the UK, developed with 29 partners with
technical specifications open-sourced.

BBC Food has complimented its extensive recipe
database with iWonder interactives and guides which
promote health and wellbeing.
Dish Up is a year-long multi-platform campaign which
encourages families and young people to cook
simple dishes from scratch. In doing so its aim is to
increase understanding of food, nutrition and healthy
eating.
Cbeebies Big Day out at the Furchester Hotel to
encourage families to eat more healthily.

Ten Pieces campaign to unlock creative potential
through classical music.
Delivered through a network of more than 250 music
hubs, education services and arts organisations.
Focussed on secondary schools (Key Stage 3) this
academic year, building on the primary school

BBC-wide season to commemorate 400 years since the death of Shakespeare,
inspiring a Year of Books with a range of initiatives in development:
• Totally Shakespeare in partnership with Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and
CBBC to get Primary aged children and teachers to be epic at Shakespeare
• Say it with Shakespeare for older teenagers.
• Children’s literature – ‘Awesome Authors’ – for 6-11 year olds and their
families.
• Comedy Classroom to discover 13-15 year old writing talent.
• Live Lessons in partnership with the RSC.
• Digital Learning initiatives aimed at 16-24 year olds to create a national
dialogue about books, and to encourage a a new generation to discover
the love of reading for pleasure.

Using the micro:bit to explore science will have a key
role in addressing the computer science skills gap,
and we will work with a range of partners.
As part of this theme, our ambition is to deliver a
science campaign aimed at primary school pupils
(Key Stage 2).
Pan-BBC focus on science: ‘Age of Wonder’ has an
aspiration to be the largest public scientific
engagement campaign in British history.

BBC Ten Pieces will continue to evolve to unlock
creative potential through classical music, working
collaboratively with music and arts organisations
across the UK.
We can inspire young people to tap into their own
creative talents as a means to build character and
confidence.
Through the Radio 1 Academy we can support young
people’s aspiration to pursue careers in the creative
industries.
BBC Educational Themes (2016)
Creativity
Live Lessons bring relevant campaigns to life for
schools.
They have been a part of our educational campaigns
in recent years, with Stargazing Live and Big Painting
Challenge Live.
We will continue to produce Live Lessons, both for
primary and secondary schools.
Live Lessons in 2016 will be linked to Ten Pieces, BBC
micro:bit, Shakespeare and Comedy Classroom.

Live Lessons
Learner focussed curriculum-linked resources for 5-16
year olds (and post-16 functional skills).
Recent content published includes KS1 Science, KS2
History, KS3 English language and GCSE French,
English Lit, English Language and Maths.
Bitesize will be updated in 2016 to take full advantage
of the opportunities provided by myBBC to deliver a
personalised offer to students.

Bitesize App
A new personalised app will provide
Bitesize curriculum-linked content
for 14 – 16 year olds, keeping them
on track as they work towards their
exams.
This is part of the myBBC project
which is bringing signed-in
personalisation to all BBC services
online.
Interactive factual story-telling to inspire curiosity and
learning - so far 400 Guides and Timelines.
Building on a strong relationship with independent
producers, we are significantly increasing iWonder
guides commissioned from outside of the BBC.

BBC iWonder Inspiring curiosity in all our audiences
iWonder Community Creating a ‘maker’ tool for audiences to create multimedia factual narratives will encourage more digital creativity. The best of these will be reflected on BBC iWonder and will enable different
perspectives to be heard on BBC platforms as part of move towards a more open BBC.

A single front-door for children to the wealth of the
whole BBC and trusted partners beyond.
A review of the distinctiveness of the BBC online and a
commitment to improve our services in the Nations.

A Charter aspiration for a more open BBC working
with the widest range of partners.
The launch of iWonder Community will enable our
audiences to create their own guides and Bitesize will
become more clearly focussed on the learner.
The renewal of this online support for learning provides
an opportunity to contribute to a more open BBC.
Is there the potential for a more open platform, where
content from the BBC and other providers sits side by
side for the benefit of learners?
