To be eligible for Option 1.1, students must
obtain a minimum of 70% for English Language,
Science and Mathematics. In addition, the
overall average must be 70% and above.
To be eligible for Options 2.1 – 3.3, students
must obtain a minimum of 65% for English
Language, Science and Mathematics. In
addition, the overall average must be 65% and
above.

There are only 20 vacancies for Food & Nutrition.
There must be 20 or more students choosing Art
or Music or Food & Nutrition before the school will
consider opening the class.
Need to seek approval if students wish to exceed
the max number of subjects stated in any of the
options- subjected to approval

Higher Mother Tongue - obtain a min of 50%
for HCL/HTL at Sec 2.
Art & Music - additional subjects and will be
conducted in the afternoon and can be taken
with any combination.
Art - obtain a min of 65% for Sec 2 Art.
Music - obtain Grade 4 for both Theory and
Practical (any instruments including singing)
by 31 Dec 2017.

Principles
Are the options offered to us the final Sec 3
combinations that will be open for the Final
Option Exercise in October?
• These options were planned from the
information gathered in the Humanities
preference survey as well as from updates in
the education landscape.
• Any changes, if at all, made will be minimal for
the Final Option Exercise in October.
How many subjects are the students expected to take?
Is it dependent on the results?
At Secondary 3, will the subject combinations affect what
they study in the Junior College, university and their
career choice?
• Students generally take 7-8 subjects.
• Students’ results are a key consideration to
allocating students into the different classes.
• The subject combination does reflect the
interest and aptitude of the students in the
various subjects. Hence, when they move into
their post secondary education, they will likely
pursue similar subjects.
Is there an option to change Subject combination
in Sec 3 or after Sec 3?
• Not advisable as the runway to N- / O-
Level examination is very short.

Frequently Asked Questions
If a student is taking 3 Pure Sciences, does she
need to take 2 Humanities (Pure Geog & Combined
Humanities)?
This would be the triple science combination.
Students in that class will only offer 1 humanities.
(Combined Humanities – Social studies & 1 Elective)
Pure Humanities can be done by selected students
who have done exceeding well in all the subjects and
will be able to excel in the 9th subject. Parents will
have to submit a request in writing.
There will also be a need for there to have enough
students who are able to do the 9th subject for this to
be offered.
Can my child take only Combined Humanities
(SS & E Geog/ E Hist) and not do Literature?
In PLMGS(S), we offer 7 subjects for the Normal Academic Course and between 7 or 8 for the Express Course.
The majority of our students will offer 2 Humanities (CH & Pure Hum) from Sec 3.
We do not recommend that any student drop any subject until their graduation year.
Which subject is easier to score :
Geography, History or Literature?
• Every subject has its rigour and requirement. A student can do well in a subject as long as she has the aptitude and is willing to put in the effort .
• Students doing triple Sciences, will need to grapple with three Science subjects, which is a challenge and will require adjustment from Sec 2 to Sec 3.
• Combined Humanities which is compulsory, comprises Social Studies and an elective. This is a new subject for them. Thus, we strongly advise that students do not attempt a Pure Humanities as an additional subject.
Why is Pure History not offered
as an option for triple science?
Is it compulsory to take Literature?
In PL, almost all students study Literature. The study of Literature will deepen and enrich students’ lives. Students will also learn to look at events from various perspectives, which is an important life skill.
The reading of Literature will support their learning of the English Language because in EL, students will be tested on their ability to appreciate language and interpret the effect and connotation of words which are dealt with Literature.
Students who wish to pursue ‘Theatre Studies & Drama’ (A-Level) or apply for the special Humanities Programme at JC are required to read Literature at the H2 Level.
Can I choose to take Pure Geography and Elective
Literature instead of the options, where Social
Studies is a compulsory subject?
Combined Humanities is a compulsory subject, and Social Studies is the compulsory component.
Please refer to the booklet for information on the other Humanities subjects you can take with Social Studies.
What is the difference between Pure and
Elective Literature?
Pure Literature students to an extra Drama text examination.
Do refer to the booklet for the breakdown between the two papers.

If my daughter is keen in pursuing O-Level
Music, when does she need to submit her grade
4 external music exams results?
She’s trying for Grade 4 later this year, but
practical only grade 4 next year.
Will she be in time?
• Your daughter will need to submit her Music
certificates (minimum Grade 4 for both
Theory and Practical) together with the
Subject Combination Option Form in early
October.
Why is there no Design and Technology
combination for Sec 3 Express?
• O-Level D&T is currently not offered to
Express stream students.
