Section A ( 45 marks)

Answer the questions in the spaces provided.

A1. (a) The value of g is 10 N/kg on the Earth and 1.6 N/kg on the Moon.

When a block of metal is hung in air on Earth from a spring balance,

the reading is 9.6 N.

(i) What is the weight of the metal block on the Earth? [1]

(ii) What is the mass of the metal block on the Moon? [1]

(iii) What is the weight of the metal block on the Moon? [1]

(b) The diagram shows a displacement can which has been filled with water. When

the block of metal in (a) is lowered into the can until it is fully immersed in the

water, 120 cm3 of water overflows. Calculate the density of the metal. [2]

A2. (a) (i) State which method of heat transfer is responsible for the transfer of heat

from the Sun to the Earth. [1]

…………………………………………………………………………………

(ii) Explain why the other two methods cannot be involved in this transfer. [2]

(b) A hand feels hot when placed above a lighted match, as shown in the diagram

below.

A3. The diagram below shows how air pressure varies with time for sound waves

from two sources, A and B.

Use the diagram to describe and explain what differences would be heard in

the sound from the two sources. [4]

A4. The diagram below shows a coil of wire wrapped around a plastic tube. Inside the

tube are two pieces of soft iron. When the switch is closed, the compass needles point

in the direction of the magnetic field produced at each position. You may ignore the

magnetic field of the Earth in this question.

(a) On the diagram, mark arrows, in compasses A, B and C, to show the direction

of the magnetic field at each position after the switch has been closed. [1]

(b) When the switch is closed, the two pieces of soft iron in the tube become

magnets and move.

(i) On the diagram, mark the poles formed on each piece of soft iron. [1]

(ii) State and explain how the pieces of soft iron move. [2]

A6. The battery in the circuit has an e.m.f. of 8 V and negligible internal resistance.

Calculate

(a) the combined resistance of the three identical resistors, [2]

(b) the current, I, flowing in the circuit. [3]

Section B

Answer all the questions.

Write your answers on the lined pages provided and continue on separate answer paper.

B1. The diagram shows the variation of the speed of a lorry as it travels along a level

road.

The lorry begins to brake at the time t = 20 s, and comes to rest when t = 24 s.

The lorry has a mass of 1000 kg and the forward driving force on the wheels is 1200 N.

(a) For the first 20 s of the motion shown above, calculate

(i) the distance travelled by the lorry, [1]

(ii) the work done by the driving force, [1]

(iii) the power supplied by the driving force. [1]

(b) (i) Calculate the kinetic energy of the lorry while it is travelling at the constant

speed. [2]

(ii) When the lorry is travelling at a constant speed there is no change in its

kinetic energy. Suggest what happens to the energy that is provided by

the engine. [1]

(c ) During braking the speed of the lorry decreases uniformly. The engine no longer

provides a driving force.

(i) Calculate the deceleration of the lorry between t = 20 s and t= 24 s. [1]

(ii) Calculate the total braking force acting on the lorry during this period. [2]

(i) Explain why the power dissipated in the brakes to slow the lorry down is

greater at the beginning of the braking period than in the end. [1]

B2. (a) The figure below shows a solenoid passing through a piece of horizontal

cardboard. A direct current passes through the solenoid from A to B to produce

a magnetic field.

(i) Copy the above diagram and on it draw the shape and direction of the

magnetic field produced in the solenoid. [2]

(ii) Give two ways in which the strength of the magnetic field in the

solenoid could be increased. [1]

(b) A student designs a simple door bell as shown in the figure below.

When the switch S is pressed and then released, two notes ‘ding-ding’ are heard.

(i) Explain how the two notes are produced. [4]

(ii) Suggest one way to modify the bell so that two notes of different frequencies

‘ding-ding’ are produced. [1]

(iii) Comment on the following statement:

1. The bell does not work if the polarities of the battery are reversed. [1]

2. The bell does not work if the spring is made of copper. [1]

B3. The diagram shows a ship using ultrasound to measure the depth of the sea.

A pulse of ultrasound is transmitted to the sea bed and returns to the ship.

(a) After a pulse of ultrasound is emitted from the ship. It takes 0.25 s to return

from the sea bed. The speed of ultrasound in water is 1500 m/s.

Calculate the depth of the sea bed. [2]

(b) State why the pulse of sound returns to the ship. [1]

(c) Suggest why the ear cannot detect ultrasound. [2]

(d) Ultrasound and X-rays are both used in hospitals. When ultrasound is used the

nurse stays with the patient but when an X-ray is taken the nurse walks away.

Explain in detail why this is so. [3]

(e) Suggest why sound waves cannot move from the Earth to the Moon. [2]
