CLINICAL AND OPERATIVE EXPERIENCE As a Junior Registrar, my experience in general surgery included accident & emergency and

neurosurgery with 2/7 to 6/7 on-call rota. As a Senior Registrar, in the tertiary referral cancer centre, I

have worked in head and neck, thoracic, breast, paediatric, urology, gynaecological and plastic and

reconstructive surgery; I was on call all week except on Sundays (6/7 on-call rota) for all oncological

emergencies. I was responsible for outpatients, ward management, operating lists, and post-operative

AUDIT EXPERIENCE

I performed the clinical audit in the Head and Neck Unit at the Tata Memorial Hospital in 1992.

This was the first time an audit was performed at this hospital and was greatly appreciated - the

audit cycle was successfully completed resulting in changes in clinical practice including plans

for prospective audits. I have performed the monthly audit in each of my surgical units.

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE

I have been the Class representative and have managed scholastic activities in the Junior

College and Medical School. I was the Cultural Secretary and have arranged state cultural

meets. I was involved in the arrangments of scientific sessions of the Golden Jubilee confernces

of Tata Memorial Hospital in 1992, and the UICC cancer Congress in 1994, at New Delhi. As

surgical resident, I managed the wards, colleagues’ and junior’s rotas and weekly meetings.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As a Senior Registrar and as Clinical/Senior Research fellow I undertook bedside teaching in

surgery and operative surgery to my junior trainees for 4 years. I have been on the faculty for

teaching about clinical trials and medical statistics to medical staff of a major teaching hospital.

I have been involved in teaching of undergraduate students in University College London on

several occasions during my tenure as Research fellow/ Hon Lecturer and then regularly since

October 1999 as the Specialist Registrar. This has been in the form of weekly bedside teaching

and topic teaching lectures.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE I presented my first research paper in 1st year of medical school, in 1983 and since then I have

accumulated considerable experience in innovation, research methodology, epidemiology,

medical statistics, scientific writing and, design, planning and execution of clinical trials. I have

given training seminars about clinical trials and statistics and have refereed manuscripts for the

Lancet, Eur J Surg Oncol, Br. J Cancer and Eur J Cancer. I have some experience in molecular

biology viz- cell culture, and PCR. My fields of interest have successively been Physiology,

Pharmacology, General Surgery and presently, surgical oncology, tobacco eradication /

education and breast cancer.

I have been a Clinical Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at the Tata Memorial

Hospital between 1994 and 1996. In the UK I have been Surgical Research Fellow from 1996 to

1999.

My PhD thesis (submitted to University of London in Sep 2001), is on local treatment of breast

cancer and the use of targeted Intraoperative radiotherapy. This novel approach has now

interested several international groups and is the subject of ongoing clinical trials.
