Key Benefits of IP Telephony

Not “one wire to the desktop.”Not 300 bells and whistles.

Four Revolutionary Features:

- Computer-Telephone Integration (CTI)

- Unified Messaging

- Telecommuter/Branch Office Support

- Web Based Administration

You Can Do These on a TDM PBX.

CTI on IP PBX

CTI is implemented via software only.

TAPI driver and softphone application on PC communicate with the IP PBX over LAN.

No need for TAPI adaptor hardware because the IP PBX, PC, and phone all speak IP.

Unified Messaging

Single System for Voice, Fax & E-Mail

- See All Mail In One In-Box

- Listen to Voice Mail via PC

- Hear E-Mail via Phone

- Respond to Voice Mail w/ E-mail and vice versa (reduce call-backs!)

- Forward and Folder Voice Mail w/ E-Mail

Unified Messaging on TDM PBX

External UM Server attaches via station ports. Requires station card in PBX plus voice cards in PC plus (sometimes) external adaptor and/or serial data link from PBX.

Requires engineering effort for each model PBX.

Unified Messaging on IP PBX

Unified Messaging is implemented in software only.

IP PBX runs on standard server OS (UNIX, LINUX, Win2K) so UM can run on the same server.

Or UM runs on its own server and communicates via an IP standard. No adaptors needed.

Telecommuter/Branch Support(a.k.a. “Voice VPN”)

Enable PBX stations to be deployed over IP WAN or Internet.

- Part or Full-Time Telecommuters

- Small Branch Office to Metro Hub

- Distributed Call Center

- Toll By-Pass

- Coordinated Dialing Plan

The Problem is the PBX

In a traditional PBX, the call control application is “locked” inside a proprietary platform, and tied to the media switching fabric.

Other applications can’t communicate easily.

Having It All on an IP PBX

In an IP PBX, the call control application is separated from the switching fabric and becomes a typical data application on a standard server platform.

Advanced software applications like CTI, UM, Telecommuter Support, and Web Admin are built in and can run on the same server platform. All the applications communicate in an IP structure.

BUT it’s a total system replacement. Expensive!
