All products are manufactured from natural materials and although we strive to provide consistency of colour, variation may occur in the manufacturing process. It is for this reason that werecommend that products are selected from at least three bales, within each delivery. This will eliminate 'banding'.

As these products contain cement they may suffer from the temporary phenomenon of efflorescence. This is a natural phenomenon and is in no way detrimental to their performance characteristicsand is common in all good quality products with a high cement content. Time should be given for all products to weather in. The best action is to ‘let nature take its course’.

All information contained in this brochure is correct at the time of going to print. We recommend that you contact our sales staff for further information at the design stage of your projectfor the most up to date information. Acheson & Glover reserves the right to discontinue products if necessary.

The colours shown in this literature are as accurate as the printing process will allow. Whilst every effort is made to match colours and represent textures, we recommend that colours and textures are chosen from actual samples of the products.

Lime Sand Mortars

Mortar Colour Palette

The mortar colours shown above are also available in a light and dark shade, with the exception ofWhite and Ernestone.

Acheson & Glover manufactures a range of colouredlime sand mortars. These products are manufacturedto the highest standards and are available in a widerange of colours designed to blend or complimentyour chosen Acheson & Glover Brick.

Recently there has been a resurgence in the use of Lime Sand Mortar as people recognise thebenefits of its use from practical applications and the technical notes published within theconstruction press.

Mortar colour is a critical consideration, and shouldbe carefully matched to the Acheson & Glover Brickcolour or existing mortar in the case ofrefurbishment and extensions. Be aware of theimpact of mortar colour, and take care whenchoosing matching, contrasting or neutral colours.

The effect of mortar colours, which accounts forup to 17% of an area of brickwork, cannot beover-emphasised.Once mortar colour has been agreed, giveconsideration to the type of mortar joint. Thechoice can have an effect on appearance, and it isimportant to match existing joint type onextensions.

This range of coloured mortars has the following qualities:

• Consistency in all elements of mortar lime, sand and colour; as a result of quality controlled production.

• Correct lime content to ensure increased resistance to water penetration.

• Lime Sand Mortar encourages the self-healing of hair line cracks.

• Good water retention capabilities resulting in minimised efflorescence and no unsightly brick marking.

Prior to delivery an appropriate area should beprepared before tipping the mortar to prevent contamination and wastage. On delivery Lime Sand Mortar should be smoothed over with therear of a shovel to provide a skin to preventlumping and then covered. Lime Sand Mortar willdeteriorate after a period of time, so it isrecommended that it used within two months ofdelivery. Rain action on these mortars canproduce concentrations of free lime which result insubsequent staining of the brickwork.

A sample service is available together with goodworking practice information to ensure that you get a quality project as the finished result.

Design and detailing to prevent moisturecrossing the cavity are of paramountimportance. The following recommendationsare intended to prevent moisture crossing tothe inner leaf of the wall.

a Use the correct designation of mortar as recommended in BS 5628-3: 2001,Section 5.7. See page 30.

b Take all necessary design precautions to minimise the effects of movement. See page 32 relating to movement control.

c Provide weep holes in the outer leafimmediately beneath the ground leveldamp-proof course. Weep holes can beprovided by omitting the mortar in aperpend joint.

Suitable spacing for weep holes is atintervals of every 3rd perpend. Clear weepholes should be provided wherever thereis extensive bridging of the cavity tosafeguard against a build up of water andthus penetration to the internal skin.

d Ensure the horizontal and vertical damp-proof courses are correctly positioned, adequately long and stepped outwards.Damp-proof course should extend throughthe full thickness of the leaf andpreferably project beyond the face andshould not be bridged by pointing orrender. Failure to lap damp-proof coursesreduce their efficiency. Recommendedminimum lap is 100mm as perBS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.5.5.

e Ensure chimneys have effective d.p.c. to eliminate the possibility of waterpenetrating the fabric. See right foreffective waterproofing of chimneys.

f Use brick stretcher calculation table onpage 29 to ensure the position ofwindow/door openings etc. correspondwith brick work.

Effective Weatherproofing for Chimneys

Build them right...Build them watertight!

All buildings for habitation require an effectivedamp-proof course (d.p.c.) to eliminate thepossibility of water penetrating the fabric. This is a well known building requirement, but whereproblems sometimes occur is in the provision of a suitably effective d.p.c. around a chimney.Unless the d.p.c. is fitted correctly, waterproofingwill be insufficient and moisture is likely to rundown the inside of the chimney.

To prevent this happening it is important to lay the damp-proof course tray horizontally across the brick or masonry of the chimney and thencover with the chimney flashing, as shown in the illustrations opposite. Shortcuts will result in problems and unnecessary expense.

But don't just take our word for it! The NationalHouse-building Council (NHBC) remind us of how to get it right:

"Above the roof, chimney d.p.c.s should link withflashings. Two d.p.c.s should be used at suitablelevels when the roof is steeply pitched, that is wherethe difference in level between the lower and higherintersection of the chimney with the roof will bemore than 450mm. Lead trays should be protectedwith a thick coat of bitumen or bitumen paintwhere in contact with mortar. Plastic d.p.c.s are not suitable."

Mortar Mixes

Mortar must be carefully gauged in theproportions given in the specification, obtainedfrom the Architect or our Technical SalesDepartment. Too strong a mix may lead tocracking in the finished work. Too weak a mixwill adversely affect both the strength anddurability of the work. If the sand is dry orsaturated the specified volume should be used.If it is damp, it may be necessary to increase the volume to allow for the effects of bulking. In both instances care must be taken to ensurecorrect volumes of cement.

The mortar should be mixed by hand ormachine, in accordance with BS 8000-3: 2001,Section A.4.2.3, until it has a uniform colour throughout.

N.B. Shovel mixing of mortar can cause apparentcolour changes in areas of brickwork.

In the majority of cases only durability needs to be considered when selecting mortar gradesand Table 1 below, based on information on BS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.7, can assist todetermine the appropriate mortar designation.

Mortar BSEN 998-2 Cement: Masonry Cement: (Plasticised)Designation Mortar Class Lime: Sand Sand Cement: Sand

A Designation III mortar mix (1 : 1 : 6 cement:lime:sand) is recommended for the majority ofbrickwork above sub-floor level constructions.

The final appearance of the brickwork will be influenced by the choice and consistency of themortar mix, therefore the specification and use of coloured mortars should be included.

Water Absorption

The outer leaf of most cavity walls is notimpervious. It should be assumed that water willrun down the inner face of such cavities.See (BS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.5, Table 12) and (BS8000-3: 2001 Workmanship on building sites, Part3: Code of practice for masonry.) Absorption is nota mandatory requirement in BS EN 771-3: 2003 asthere is no relationship between absorption anddurability in Acheson & Glover Brick. However, asa guideline for suction rates and other calculations,it should be noted that Acheson & Glover Brickexhibit a typical water absorption of less than 8%.

Acheson & Glover carries out regular testing on all its products and they appointed the IndustrialResearch & Technology Unit (IRTU) an independenttesting station based in Lisburn Co. Antrim todevise a method to measure the degree of waterpenetration if any in its facing brick.

Sound Insulation

Building regulations and their supportingdocuments contain provisions which are based onthe mass law, where-by the sound insulation valueincreases with increasing density and thickness ofthe wall. Acheson & Glover bricks have a slightlyhigher density than most other types of bricks andwill therefore provide improved insulation. (Referto BS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.10).

Fire Resistance

Relevant fire resistance information is provided inBS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.8, Table 15, which givesnotional fire resistance figures for facing brick andother material.

Efflorescence

The most common form of efflorescence on brick is a result of Soluble Salt, which is not present in theAcheson & Glover brick range.

NB. Please note that temporary lime bloom may occur occasionally due to cement being used in thisproduct. Good Site Practice as per the company’s recommendations will help to prevent this temporaryform of efflorescence.

31

The purpose was to ascertain if excessive waterpenetration was possible through a wallconstructed of Brick manufactured by theCompany, into the wall cavity, directly through thebrick. After extensive testing the IndustrialResearch & Technology Unit (IRTU) came to thefollowing conclusions; "That the bricks did notexhibit signs of excessive water absorption whenexposed to the test method" and as such, "it wouldseem unlikely that significant amounts of waterwould penetrate a wall constructed with themthrough an actual brick. If such a situation were tooccur, a more likely route for water penetrationwould be through the mortar joints".

A copy of the testing method and full report isavailable on request, from Acheson & Glover’sTechnical Department.

ControlMovement

All brickwork is subject to movement mainly as aresult of temperature and atmospheric changes. The following basic recommendations will helpaccommodate expansion and contraction.

a Where design considerations preclude discrete panels, incorporate movement control joints toform the brickwork into panels in which the length is not greater than twice the height. As a general rule vertical movement joints to accommodate horizontal movement should beprovided at typically 6m intervals as per BS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.4. Our technical Sales Department will be pleased to offer advice.

b Generally do not exceed designation III mortar. If special constructions require stronger mortar, reduce the distance between movement control joints. Lime Sand Mortar will help repair small incidence of movement by "self healing". The use of Lime Sand Mortar gives a stronger bond than can be obtained with air entrained mortars of a similar compressive strength. This better bond is likely to result in greater resistance to rain penetration and improved flexural strength.

c Provide movement control joints where adjoining areas of structure will operate differently i.e. changes in thickness and height of wall.

Acheson & Glover Brick bales are covered with apolythene hood and strapped, offering maximumprotection during transportation and storage priorto use.Non Returnable Pallets can be provided on request.

CoverageThere are 60 bricks per m2, including mortar in a single skin of brickwork.

DeliveryAcheson & Glover’s own fleet of mechanicaloff-loaders deliver to you on time. Should you haveany special requirements please inform us prior to delivery.

HandlingBricks should be stored on sound, level ground, raised clear of wet and muddy areas to preventcontamination and staining. Storage areas shouldbe sited close to the points of work to reduceunnecessary handling and to minimise damageand waste.

Bricks should be protected from the weather onsite and during construction including thecovering of completed or uncapped brickwork.Waterproof coverings should allow air circulation.Materials used in conjunction with facing bricksshould also be stored under protection.

These precautions will reduce the likelihood of subsequent lime blooming and shrinkagemovement.

Damage and wastage will be minimised bymechanical methods of distribution to points ofwork. Facing bricks should be lifted and placed notthrown and tipped.

CleaningBefore using proprietary cleaner please consultAcheson & Glover for the best method of cleaningdirty brickwork. Where proprietary cleaners arespecified, they should be used sparingly andimmediately washed off with clean water, otherwiseacid attack could ensue.

Acheson & Glover Brick should be used from atleast three bales to ensure a blend throughout thewall and eliminate unsightly banding.

Heritage Brick have a smooth arris which is laid tothe building line and a hand made arris which isplaced in the mortar bed. This however is notcritical but does improve the aesthetic quality ofthe overall project.

a Do not lay bricks when temperature is at or below 3°C, or when freezing may occur before the mortar has hardened. Consideration shouldbe given to air and wind temperature.

b When building brick in dry / warm conditions the workability of the mortar should be increased rather than wetting the actual brick. In damp weather conditions, a dryer mortar consistency should be used to help increase suction on the brick.

Heritage Brick are manufactured with three25mm diameter holes per brick a good keybetween brick and mortar is easily achieved.

c Ensure that bed joints and perpendicular joints are fully filled to help prevent rain penetration.

d Cavities and wall ties must be clean and free from mortar and debris. The wall-ties should be laid falling towards the outer leaf – never falling towards the inner leaf. The drip of the wall-tie (drip down) must be positioned centrally in the cavity.See diagram below.

Wall-tie fallingto outer leaf

Outer leaf

Drip laid centrally Point downwards

e Partial cavity fill under the provisions of the building regulations a 50mm clear cavitymust be maintained. Where partial or full cavity insulation is proposed always follow the manufacturers recommendations. Fill cavities below ground level with concrete to 150mm minimum and preferably 225mm below the ground level d.p.c. in the outer leaf. This is to stabilise the two leaves and to preventthe bottom of the wall filling with water.

f Failure to lap d.p.c. reduces its efficiency. Recommended minimum lap in d.p.c. 150mm.

g Clear weep holes should be provided wherever there is extensive bridging of the cavity.

h Propping and strutting of newly erected work, particularly gable ends, may be necessary during high winds. Scaffolding boards should be turned back to avoid unsightly splashing of the facing work.

Finished areas of wall should be covered as the work proceeds to avoid splashing and staining from other works.

i Pre-formed cavity trays with stop ends are recommended. Trays without stop ends allow water-throw and subsequent staining of the brick work.

j Sills and copings should project and provide a suitable drip. Failure to do so throws water onto the face causing staining and / or lime bloom.

k Newly built brick work should be cleaned down and protected at the end of the working day from rain and frost.

Acheson & Glover Brick should be protected from the weather on site andduring construction including the covering of completed but uncapped work. These precautions will reduce the likelihood of efflorescence and subsequentlime blooming.

Care should be taken to prevent mortarsmearing the surface of the Acheson &Glover Brick, as cleaning at a later stagecould be difficult and can lead to expensiveand time consuming remedial treatments.Prevention is better than cure.

All mortar joints should be well filled to helpprevent weeping.

Cavities must be kept clean, as dirty cavitiesincrease the risk of water reaching the innerleaf and can cause cold bridging.

Acheson & Glover Brick should be stored on sound, level ground raised clear of wetand muddy areas to prevent contaminationand staining.
