BRG HistoryThe Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the first edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That first issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG GoalsBeaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to first visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

he Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District has completed

a long-awaited Westside Regional Trail expansion project, adding 1.5 miles of hard-surface trail that is now open to the public.The year-long expansion, funded by THPRD’s 2008 voter-approved bond measure, means users now have six mostly continuous miles of regional trail in the southern half of the Park District. The path extends north from Tigard city limits at Barrows Road all the way to the Tualatin Hills Nature Park and the MAX light-rail station at Merlo Road in Beaverton.“It opens up a lot of recreational opportunities,” said THPRD project manager Gery Keck. “It connects Progress Lake and the Tualatin Hills Nature Park – two of our jewels

– and provides a nice continuous stretch of trail for people who want to exercise, walk the dog, or enjoy a non-motorized commute.”The $4.1 million project entailed the completion of three trail segments that were previously un nished because of construction challenges, including the need to protect sensitive wetlands. One new segment, over Mt. Williams, was particularly imposing because of steep inclines, trees and a gas line that required some ingenuity to work around. Completion of the project represents another milestone in THPRD’s efforts to create a mostly continuous 10-mile north-south backbone running through the district from Barrows Road to the PCC Rock Creek Campus in Bethany. The backbone is scheduled to be done in January 2016, after completion of a segment of the Waterhouse Trail and a segment connecting the Waterhouse Trail to the Westside Trail.

Meantime, the recently completed trail segments should delight users.“People have been wanting on the trail since we started digging,” Keck said. “I’ve been out there every week for more than a year and every time I’m out, people ask when it will open or stop to say thank you.”

A Beaverton gym is turning out teenage boxing champions.

The gym is run by the Police Ac-tivities League of Beaverton. Two young boxers under the age of 16 years old recently brought home national honors.

Alex Hughitt, 13, is in the eighth grade at Whitford Middle School. Hughitt said he had been the target of bullies growing up.

“Yeah, really bad,” he said. “They used to call me names about my skin color and everything.”

He said boxing helped give him confidence in himself. He’s been training at the PAL gym since he was 8 years old and now has com-peted in more than 60 matches.

“He’s had some tough times. He had to learn hard,” said coach Char-

lie Rios. “He didn’t have a lot of skill coming up. And he just had to tough it out, and he did.”

Now, Hughitt is a champion boxer with an impressive title belt. This summer, he won the Junior Gold Gloves National Championship.

Rios said different kids get in-volved with the program for differ-ent reasons. The American Acade-my of Pediatrics opposes boxing for children and teens, but Rios said the young boxers learn hard work, discipline and dedication.

It’s not just for boys, either.

Sunset High School, won a Junior

Olympics bronze medal.

She competes against other girls

in the ring, but spars and trains

with the boys. Ornelas admitted she

was a bit of a bully outside the ring.

Putting on boxing gloves helped

her channel that energy.

While teenage boxers like Hughitt

and Ornelas are bringing national

recognition to the PAL boxing

program, it’s also for those who will

never move beyond shadow box-

ing. Around 100 kids visit the gym

three nights a week to train on a

punching bag, work out and bond

with others.

The first event is a food drive. At both locations we'll be driving people to "Like" us on Facebook, for each like we'll be donating a meal to the Cat Adoption Team and Cascade Beagle Rescue. So the more likes, the more food is donated!

The second event is a pictures with Santa. Cascade Beagle rescue will be in store December 7th, with Santa. They'll be taking pictures of you and your animal and the donation is only $5, all proceeds go to the beagles!

Whether you’re looking for help with math, science, writing, or almost any other subject, our Homework Helpers are here for you! A. Practical issues, safety not being the least, would generally cause the officer to call in an on duty person to enforce the law.

A: Although there is a section in the Oregon statute regarding headlight specifications (ORS 816.050), Oregon has adopted the Federal Department of Transportation’s definition which does indeed allow for many of these kinds of headlights. Use of high beams or having misaligned lights that would shine into oncoming traffic is enforceable under ORS811.520 and/or ORS816.300.

A: The answer is no as long as they are on a public road it would be illegal. They would have to pull over to the shoulder.

A: The second car may make a right hand turn under those circumstances as long as he/she does not leave the paved portion of the road and they don’t drive in a designated bike lane in order to make that turn. As you can tell a great deal is dependent on exactly where the first car in line stops.

The Making of "Bumble"The concept began a month ago with a 3D sketch.

Then comes the engineering: measuring, design, deconstruct/reconstruct, redesign and wiring (to make the tree light up!).The base structure and armature were created by my husband a week ago.

It took 3 days to sculpt the figures and create the many details out of modeling chocolate.

A day before the cover shot was taken, I made the cake base, frosting and fillings.Lastly, 2 hours before the shoot, I did the detail work and assembly: setting the cake in place, frosting and icing work, coconut and white chocolate shaving (for the snow) and lots of touch up.

I do it for the applause, for the shining lights that blur the crowd’s features and bounce off the occasional glasses, for the capturing movement, and the emotion I express. I ignore the smudged blood, ripped skin, pain, pus-filled blisters and sore limbs. I kick, I make shapes, I tell my story, and I dance.

My arm drops like a guillotine and I hear a sickening crunch. My cleaver splits the fibers and the tendons curl like broken guitar strings. The client across the slab looks on; he feels nothing. I wrap up the fresh celery and hand it to him. “Thanks for visiting my vegetable shop, come back soon!”

Ten years old. He makes a bow from bones of his backyard tree.

Fourteen. He attempts a fifty-pound recurve. He’ll regret that tomorrow.

Now he’s got a compound ~~ pulls like water.

But no shot will be sweeter than the first with that bent branch, half his life ago.

(He only almost hit the cat.)

The innocent girl scampered through the rain; laughing. Unknowingly, she danced through a large puddle that had been doused with sparkly silver glitter. The delicate glitter clung to the new rain boots her mother gave her for her sixth birthday. Away she went, enjoying life, while sprinkling glitter all over the world.

Round one. I think I’ve got it. Started strong no worries. Round two. It’s a good fight. Still got my kick. Breath. Heart racing. Round three. I won’t stop. Almost done. Round four. I don’t know if I can keep it up. My heart pounding rapidly. Finally done. My worst middle school nightmare. The mile.

Waves slapped against the rock where she was huddled, threatening to knock her into the sea. The water rose higher and higher as she tried to shelter her face from the icy spray. She had only wanted to see the pelicans, but was now forced to sit there, soaked and shivering, until the tide receded.

“It is my last day,” Miguel thought. He was being walked into the courtyard to be executed. King Fred ordered the guards to shoot. Miguel dodged the bullets with a ninja double back flip. He sprinted to the castle gates and with all of his might he jumped the 10-yard moat and fled to safety.

You know those nervous feelings you get right before a speech? Miles was feeling like that. He prepared a detailed speech, but it was useless. “Maybe I shouldn’t ask,” Miles thought. Yet he still went to her house and asked, “Will you go to homecoming with me?”

“Yes,” she replied.

It was worth the shot.
