Term 3, Issue 3 2017
This week we our Clontarf Academy have been on camp and showcasing our school to the Partners of Clontarf and Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison. This was a great privilege and our Academy boys and Partner’s group enjoyed each other’s company. A big thank you to all who helped in making this possible with their organisation and support. Also special thanks to Aunty Lacey and the Dance crew for wowing our visitors.
Brewarrina Central School News
Clontarf Foundation
Welcome back to a shortened Week 6- I hope
that everyone enjoyed their Mid Term Break and
were able to recover from the particularly
virulent dose of the flu’ that is knocking people
about in Brewarrina at the moment. Many of you
may have also been at the Rugby League Grand
Final where the Brewarrina Googars were
triumphant. Well done to all those involved.
Our students have also been successful in their
sporting endeavours last week. Over 20 students
travelled to Bourke last week for the Primary
District Athletics Carnival. All these students
should be proud of the way in which they
competed in their events. I received a message
from a teacher from another school who
complimented me on how ‘awesome your kids
are. ‘They are ‘so respectful and their behaviour
is out of this world.’ I felt so happy to receive this
wonderful feedback and congratulate both the
students and staff who accompanied them. On
the day Ashlei Williams was the Senior Girls
Champion, Kyle Salt the Junior Boys Champion
and Issac Orcher 11 Years Boys Runner Up. We
now have 11 students who are eligible to attend
the Regional Athletics Carnival. These students
are: Ashlei Williams, Kyle Salt, Issac Orcher, Dylan
Rosser, Jye Parker -Little, Tierah Nicholls, Kirk
Eyre, Cameron Fox, Billie-Jean Williams, Javantae
Gordon and Kallan Murray. We wish them all the
best in their future events.
As mentioned in the previous Newsletter, we had
two students, Belmont McHughes and Rehannah
Russell, participate in the Regional Public
Speaking Competition based on the NAIDOC 2017
theme: Our Languages Matter. These students
performed commendably and were rated as in
the top group. Thank to Miss Kirby for supporting
them through the speech writing and language
orientation. These students certainly made their
mark.
Week 6 is extremely busy with the Trial HSC
exams throughout the week and Photograph Day
on Wednesday. Thank you to Mrs. Hertslet for
her organisation of these events. Clontarf are also
involved in a visit by dignitaries and a visit to
Toorale. The dance groups supervised and
coached by Aunty Lacey will be dancing for our
visitors.
Brewarrina Central School is being used as a
setting for the film Emu Runner which is being
shot in the next few weeks. Some of our students
are also involved in the film with Rhae-Kye Waites
playing the lead role. We look forward to seeing
the final product in the future.
Last Wednesday the staff were involved in an
extended Staff meeting to consider the
Suspension Policy and the preliminary
consultation for the School Plan 2018- 2020.
Parents/carers, community members and
students will be consulted about the directions of
the school in the next three years in the near
future. The next extended staff meeting will be in
Week 5 of Term 4. This means that the school will
close on Friday 15th December, 2017 which is the
final day for students.
Later in the term we will be contacting
parents/carers and community members
regarding a survey on the Connected
Communities Strategy. Your input and
participation will be greatly appreciated. More
information will be delivered on this as we
receive it.
Please remember, if you have any concerns
regarding your student’s progress, please contact
us at school.

We’re half way through the term and Bre Central
kids are on fire! Last week we had Primary
District Athletics in Bourke and there was very
positive feedback from other schools. The kids
demonstrated our school values and were SAFE
RESPECTFUL LEARNERS. They all put in a great
effort and twelve children are eligible to attend
Regional Athletics. Well done!
Congratulations to Belmont and Rehannah for
their wonderful effort at the NAIDOC public
speaking competition. They did a fantastic job
and made us very proud.
We said farewell to Mrs Willoughby last week.
Mrs Willoughby enjoyed her time at Bre Central
and the Year 2 kids loved having her teach them.
We wish her all the best in her teaching career
and we hope to see her back here again!
Lots of great things happen around our school,
every day. We have Homework Club for Years 4, 5
and 6 every Monday and Games Afternoon every
Tuesday. Ms Holmes has started a school choir at
recess and Aunty Lacey and Ms Pratt are doing
dance group at lunch. Very shortly there will be
another footy carnival in Brewarrina with training
to start up soon. It is great to see the kids being
active at school!
Families will be receiving NAPLAN results in the
mail soon. If you have any questions, please don’t
hesitate to contact the school or myself.
Have a great fortnight!

Year 6 have had a busy term so far, with lots
more exciting events coming up – look out for our
fundraising events for our Canberra trip and Year
6 formal!
We have been practising maths skills in a range of
contexts:
Using written methods to add, subtract,
multiply and divide
Using times tables facts to investigate
prime, square and abundant numbers
Justifying predictions of what the factors
will be for a given number
Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and
1000 with numbers up to four decimal
places
In literacy we have read the novel ‘Holes’ by Louis
Sachar, using the ‘Point, Evidence, Explain’
strategy to discuss explicit and implicit evidence
about characters. We also evaluated the author’s
use of figurative language, which linked to our
reading of Leaum Bloomfield’s writing about the
fish traps. The children used this to write their
own recollections about the river.
Year 6 are lucky to have Aunty Lacey working in
their classroom, and as well as our Cultural
Studies lessons, where we have been looking at
role models with Aunty Lacey and learning
welcome to Country with Belmont, we have used
First Nations stories in our literacy lessons, for
example ‘The emu in the sky’ story, which also
links to our learning about Earth and space in
science.
We are using the website code.org to practise our
coding skills – you have to persevere to figure out
how to debug the programme! This and the
newly updated Mathletics website are both
supporting our learning in Maths and Computing.
LAST Teacher News
This term student will be doing Project Based
Learning.
Project Based Learning is all about student’s
interests.
Students get the opportunity to choose texts
they would like to learn about. They chose
different text from the library each week.
They continue their learning by reading, writing
and researching information about the text with
Miss Skuthorpe within a classroom environment.
Trial HSC Examinations are to be held in Week 6.
Year 11 Yearly Examinations will be in Week 8.
Students should be using their time wisely and
ensuring they are revising their work. They can
ask their teachers for help if they need it.
Students may stay at school to study in between
exams, or study at home.
Tuesday afternoon Homework Centre has
dropped in student numbers. Teachers give up
their time in the afternoon to support students
with their learning. All students are encouraged
to take advantage of this. If students to not have
any homework or assignments that they need
help with, teachers have a variety of resources
that they can provide. Afternoon tea is also
provided.
PBL Reward Day will be in the last week of the
term. Students must earn two wristbands to take
part in the Reward.
NAPLAN results have shown that our Year 7 and 9
students have made significant growth. This is a
positive reflection for the teaching and learning
that happens in the Secondary. We still have
some Year 9 students that while they made
growth, did not meet minimum standard- which
is now a requirement for sitting the HSC in 2020-
but there are plenty of opportunities in the next
few years to reach it. A simple information
handout is included in this newsletter. Feel free
to discuss this with your child’s teacher if you
have concerns.
A very important part of learning is ensuring that
you are at school every day. The structure of High
School education means that it can be difficult for
students to catch up if they miss days. Teachers
do everything they can to support students, but
this is difficult if students are regularly absent
from school. Our attendance goal is 95% - it
would be fantastic for students and families to
encourage coming to school every day.
Award Recipients at Secondary Assembly Week 6:
Lara Bennett (Year 8)- For giving a great effort in
all classes
Dylan Shillingsworth (Year 9)- For always having a
go
Please remember if you have any questions or
concerns about your child to contact the school.

Dancing update What a busy but great term our dancers have had, we are busy preparing a new routine that we will be
presenting at the end of term assembly. This week both our girls and boys danced for the Clontarf event.
Their confidence and willingness to dance in front of a crowd is something we are all very proud of. A
massive thank you to the staff at the Museum for donating the material for our new skirts and Mrs Herstlet
for donating some Emu feathers. Thank you to all the dancers and their families for your ongoing support!

General Comment: What a busy few weeks we have had around the Academy. Last week we
participated in the largest ever Ross Kelly Cup. The week was jam packed with action starting with a great
dinner with the St Ignatius crew who visited our Academy earlier this year. Wednesday was spent carving
the harbor on a jet boat and finished with a great feed on Manly Beach. The boys were treated to a Q and A
with Latrell Mitchell and Chris Smith a former Clontarf graduate who plays with the Sydney Roosters over
dinner. Thursday the Bre and Bourke fellas ripped in to the footy narrowly losing their opening two matches
and drawing the third. All the fellas competed in great spirit during the day. A huge congratulation goes to
Dylan Shillingsworth who selected from the 350 boys in the top 20 to represent the NSW Clontarf All Stars.
