BREWARRINA NEWS Price $1.10 (inc. GST) Volume 2 No39 Date 11th August 2000
Proudly Supported by the Brewarrina Chamber of Commerce PO Box 109 Brewarrina NSW 2839 Ph: 0268392009 Fax 0268392022
At 11:07 pm on Thursday 4th of August the New South Wales Fire Bri-
gades Communications Centre received a call that there was a car
alight at Lukas Shell in Bridge Road, Brewarrina.
The local Brewarrina Brigade was responded and when arriving on the
scene at 11:12 pm found a Ford Falcon sedan engulfed in flames.
Firefighters proceeded to douse the fire with water using a low
pressure hose and water carried on the fire appliance. Firefighters then
assembled foam equipment and completed extinguishing the fire.
At 11:20 pm the Brewarrina Fire Brigade reported to the NSW Fire
Brigades Communications Centre that the Fire had been extinguished
and that a Ford Falcon Sedan had been destroyed by fire.
The fire is being treated as suspicious, and is being investigated by
local Police.
Treat
Cancer with
Daffodils
… and give hope for a cancer-free future
By taking part in Daffodil Day on Friday 18 August you can help save lives and enhance the quality of life
for those living with cancer. You can help by buying Daffodils and related merchandise, available from the
Brewarrina Shire Council offices in Bathurst Street, Brewarrina.
Last year Daffodil Day raised $2.1M in NSW. Funds raised from Daffodil Day helps fund programs in re-
search, education and support for people with cancer. This year the target is $2.4M.
Sixty years ago almost all cancers were incurable, but thanks to cancer research, better treatments and ear-
lier diagnosis, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. The good news is that 50% of cancers
are successfully treated. But with almost 27,000 people in NSW diagnosed with cancer each year we still
have a long way to go.

Dear Ethel Congratulations to Boonay for be-ing awarded the dummy spitting award. How did that dance go Boonay? Well done Kevo for nomi-nating him to 2web. You can view the trophy at the Royal Hotel. Congratulations to Irene Johnston for the best dressed lady at the rac-es. Irene I think it was the hat that won the day. Happy Birthday to Steven Gilligan, Ben Hall, Ian Light, Trish Light, Lisa Dalton, Katherine Lukas, Tom-mie Lukas and Gundi Hertslett. When asked why he went under the high jump bar at the St Pat’s carnival, Harley Stanley assured me “it was to high to jump over so I went under”. Good try Harley. Wel-come home to Norman Darcy who spent a few quiet days in Bre. Chel-sea Bolton obviously loves Nutella but does she know it is supposed to go in the mouth not over the face. Ethel rushed out to get the gossip on the Police Divers at the Quarry this week but found out they where Drivers. The Surf Boat Classic will be on in October which is just around the corner. A LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
Through your paper and your readers, I fully
support Bon Parkins’ comment in your
paper 14th & 28th July 2000. My home and
Myself also have been violated and Assault-
ed many times.
In fact the community safety officer from
Bourke Police Station wrote to me and
identified me as a “Repeat Victim Of Crime
For The Month”
Yet I still see the offenders against myself
walking the streets of Brewarrina “Why?
How come??” I really don’t know, back in
my days it wouldn’t be that way “Do Not
Pass Go, Go Directly To Jail” (or boys
home).
Our Police force have limitations, their
hands are tied, The same goes for our court
system. Bon as an ex Youth Worker
(Yasmar Detention Centre) I have tried so
many times to talk sense to the youth of our
town but I know that I am fighting a losing
battle!!!!
I am in good tune with our community and
very sadly Bon I do not pick up very many
“Positive Attitudes” from people I speak to.
In closing I do really believe in KHARMA,
One Day Bon these offenders will get their
act together, set up home, buy very expen-
sive possessions and them get robbed and
violated them selves “PAYBACK TIME”.
My Heart and Thoughts go out to
ANY INNOCENT PEOPLE being Violated
Robbed Assaulted in any way.
Still Yours in Unity,
MICHAEL STEPHENSON

BADGE DAY AND
LEGACY WEEK
COMMENCES 28th AUGUST
Legacy is a Uniquely Australian Organisation committed to the Welfare & support of
the Dependants of Comrades who died during and after The World Wars, and subse-
quent actions in the South Vietnam, The Gulf War and various Peacekeeping Opera-
tions such as Malaya, Korea, Borneo and more recently East Timor. That’s 77 years of
caring since its inception in 1923.
In Sydney there are 20,500 Legacy widows, more than 400 children and
disabled dependants enrolled receiving the Legacy Charter, assisting
sustaining and providing for in their need. Australia wide, the Legacy family extends
to 131,000 widows, more than 1900 children and disabled Dependants.
To maintain and expand the programmes of care, Legacy does not receive funding
from governments, so it has reached out to the public in the first week in September
every year through a special day called BADGE DAY. This year BADGE DAY will be
on the 1st of September 2000.
The Brewarrina RSL Ladies Auxiliary, have offered to sell these Badges on Friday
throughout Brewarrina.
Later A Tennis Day on the 10th September at Weilmoringle will be another oppor-
tunity to support Legacy. Legacy have indicated that they are enthusiastic of support-
ing financially the erection of further aged self-care accommodation in Brewarrina,
and have been pursuing other avenues of financial support as well.
Legacy wishes to thank the Brewarrina RSL and Shire Council and all the residents of
the Shire for their continuing support.
REMEMBER LEGACY, we simply ask.
